I like dragons better. Oblivion gates were really repetitive. While dragons are repetitive too, at least dragon battles are short, so the repetitiveness is not so bad.

I find both equally tedious.

At least dragons don't force you out of exploring the world. Other than Sigil stones and alchemy ingredients - I hated Oblivion gates. Long, tedious and all practically identical. That series of quests as part of the MQ -where you had to close an Oblivion gate outside each city was particularlypainful. I also feel like dragons are better integrated into the rest of the game, they link to the word walls, dragon priests etc - rather than looking like an Eye of Sauron randomly spawning in the middle of the landscape.

The only thing I liked about Oblivion gates is that I could completely ignore them. With dragons, not so much. Unless the dragon ADHD kicks in and they decide to firebreath every wolf, rabbit, bandit, and mudcrab nearby and leave me alone long enough for me to get some distance and carry on with my day.

I used to love when walking closer to the oblivion gate, how the sky got all lava looking and you knew you were about to kick some ass.

Never played any elder scroll game before Skyrim. Dragons could have been awesome, but are just window dressing. Would be nice if the new ignore the PC dragon bug would be fixed, I hate wasting a ton of arrows for no gain.

Dragon souls are needed to unlock powerful shouts that have The Force type qualities.
meh to shouts. they are lame. imo they dropped spell creation to make it seem like these shouts were ubertastic, but they are just spells - and nothing special except for the ones that render all dragons utterly impotent.

Next person to complain about dragons not landing, better be at the beginning of his/her game. Otherwise, use Dragonrend you imbeciles.

You're not the only one, but...

I'm going to wager that most fantasy genre nuts, when given the choice to fight a dragon or storm a dimension of hell would choose the dragon.

As far as gameplay goes? Gates lasted longer and had more to them than dragon fights, but I HATED Oblivion Gates. So damn repetative...

I don't have a strong preference either way. I agree that the Gates uglified up a nice looking world but they also yielded a good foozle. What I disliked about the Gates was the tedious noise and as others have said here, I dislike the dragons flying around so I have to wait hours of game time (it seems) for them to land.

Overall, I think both are good and vast improvements over hordes of cliff racers.

I liked Oblivion gates, I like dragons. Both get repetitive after hundreds of hours of playing, but that's how it goes.

Oh the Dragons are so much more fun, god I hated oblivion gates after a while I got to where I could tolerate the mas a necessary evil (lol) but it was never much fun. I love fighting dragons occasionally they get tedious but not usually. Nothing like dropping a dragon in a village as the townsfolk gawk in awe at your power.

Oblivion gates were ANNOYING. I was sick of trying to traverse the landscape, and getting lost! The only time I didn't mind going in one, was for the quest "The Wayward Knight" as I tried REALLY hard to keep the count's son alive.

I don't mind the dragons. They get priority every time I start the game up. I fast travel to all their locations and have at it.

I hated that one. The *#&#&Q idiot son kept charging in and dying no matter what I'd do. It, and other experiences trying to keep people alive in OB, soured me on followers here in Skyrim. I am doing a 100% solo except Shadowmere.

Back there I used to have panic attacks every time Id venture inside an Oblivion gate, at least until I realize I could enchant weapons with the sigil stones... Now dragons, well... they are cool but I don't like killing a lot of people... the NPCs should properly hide/flee... the cities are lacking people already.

Your post just reminded me of that strategy. I, too, had a "Gate Closing Kit" of 100% Chameleon so that I could zip through the towers as quickly as possible.
That is exactly what I did in Oblivion! I would run to the sigil stone. When I was finished collecting all the stones I wanted, I would then finish the main quest so they would disappear from the wild.

Dragons aren't as time consuming, so I find them less annoying than Oblivion Gates. I can find a dragon, usually kill it in a few minutes, and be on my way. If I find a Oblivion gate, the world turns ugly, and I have to spend the next half hour clearing it before I could continue on my way. Thats if I even bothered doing it, which I wouldn't after my 10th gate.

Dragons with Oblivion gates in their mouths, and they either kill you, you kill them, or they swallow you whole into their Oblivion Belly and the only way out is.... you guessed it. The Oblivion Hole!

Oblivion Gates were awesome as hell until maybe the half a dozen. Then they became tedious and awful. As I do in Skyrim, in Oblivion I just would wander around without any real objective and just clear dungeons or start whatever quests I find. Whenever I saw an Oblivion Gate, I promptly turned around and went back the direction I came.
