Signed up to say Bethesda must be crazy.
Honestly this was one of my most anticipated titles of the YEAR. The idea of running around a Blade Runner city as a bounty hunter, in a first person free roam world, in the aftermath of an alien invasion that leaves us as the dregs of a multi species society scattered around the galaxy is EVERY sci-fi fans biggest computer game wish since they first ran around Nar Shaddaa.
Bethesda have really dropped the ball with this one, seems they simply don't know a good thing when they see it these days, especially considering their bad releases. If this got marketed properly it'd sell as well as any AAA title.
Personally I think Bethesda could do with an IP in this niche genre. ID tried something similar with Rage, and whilst they got some things right there was a lack of that fundamental spark to bring it all together. Bethesdas attempts to cultivate sales for other sub genres have failed, 3rd person, first person, team online first person.
I think the problem they are having is that they have two games releasing at the end of this year that may well attract the same customers, who will really be looking to only buy one first day. Both Dishonored and Prey 2, whilst different, give us what seem to be similar game types of gameplay. I can see the business side, and I think if anything Bethesda will simply delay one until this time next year. I think though they are now wishing this was a TPS, which imo simply would simply push fans away, myself included.
Beth seem to really be trying to solidify new IPs into the market after their failed stints with licenced series, but keep missing. Their tactical multiplayer shooter failed with Brink ( Majorly ) so now they are trying with The Crossing. Their FPS failed with Rogue Warrior and with the fail of Rage financially ID are put back into FPS role, this leaves the Hyrbid-Deus Ex-like game back open. They have the major RPGs in Fallout and Elder Scrolls sorted, and are now heading towards MMORPG. That leaves the TPS market ( Wet and Demon Forge, both not heavy hitters ) and the 'Hybrid' market left.
( Yes I realise Bethesda is simply publishing the majority of games I'm talking about. )
