Capcom releasing unreplayable game

Buying used video games is great for gamers who don't want to pay full price for the latest hits. You know who doesn't like used video games? Game publishers. In a very sad twist, Capcom's fighting back against the second-hand game market with a game that can only support one save file — for life.

They're shooting themselves in the head with this one. I've hard a lot of ridiculous strategies for DRM before, but this is just unacceptable.

Haahahahahaha. Looks like Capcom takes the lead in most stupid forms of DRM. Ubisoft is left angry and confused :P

They actually thought that releasing something worse than Ubisoft did was a good idea? Wow...

Let's hope everyone bands together and this game fails miserably. :D

You don't like Capcom's games because of a DRM scheme that hasn't technically been used yet?

Anyway, disappointing Capcom. You're one of the last publishers that I would've expected this from. You'd better not pull this crap with Resident Evil: Revelations or Mega Man Legends 3.

I don't own a 3DS, so I wasn't going to buy the game anyway, but...wow. I knew Capcom's games were relentlessly dumb (in that campy fun sort of way), but I didn't expect the actual developers themselves to be this addle-brained. I'm reminded of Yahtzee's "...they're just idiots." conclusion to his RE5 review.

On the plus side, it looks like Ubisoft just got their "Stupid DRM-related Life Choices" crown stolen. So at least they've got that going for them. Which is nice.

And here I thought limited installs was bad...

Somehow, I can't see this catching on, and I REALLY hope that I'm right. I can see why developers would want to cut down on used game sales, but this is going too far. It might make buying used copies of the game unviable but when it comes at the expense of preventing replaying of the game as well, it's not worth it. Now granted, there are many games which I never replayed after finishing them once, not because I didn't enjoy them but because I didn't feel they had enough replay value to be worth a second play-through, but that's for me to decide. Now, this might be able to kill the used game market for the game, but the question is, how will it effect sales of new copies? Not much benefit in keeping people from buying used copies of your game if no one wants to buy new copies either because you do things like this.

So... what happens if your savefile corrupts or you want to start over?

Anyway, this is terrible. Unfortunately the vast majority of gamers will just piss and moan right up to the counter where they buy it anyway, because games are more important to them than standing up for themselves.

No way! Gamers have a long history of rejecting absurd business practices....

There is no "starting over". As usual the gaming boulevard press and the gullible gamers are blowing this way out of proportion. But hey you need stupid [censored] people can argue about so you get hits on your site.
This game doesn't have one coherent story or one long campaign. It just features a ton of stuff to unlock, and basically you can't "delete" maps, characters and item's that you've already unlocked.

So it's not "oh you finished the game now you have to throw it away and buy a new copy", as people make it appear to be.

I'm starting to think even Hollywood is getting jealous of the gaming industry. No other industry comes even close in their ability to screw over their customers with virtually zero backlash. Gamer's complete lack of voting with their wallet in any way other than "Please screw me over more" is the golden standard of what every industry dreams of :P

If you can't reset/delete the safe file and the safe file gets corrupted, you're pretty much screwed still.

It's not like Capcom hasn't given gamers the middle finger already. This is the same company that created an "Always Online" DRM scheme for one of their PSN titles.

They make bad games anyways.

This could very well be the most asinine method to approach DRM I've ever heard.

There are plenty of DS and 3DS games where you can't delete unlocks, this is nothing new.

Since when? Some of the best fighters with one of the most dedicated followings in gaming, arguably reviving the genre's mainstream appeal with SFIV. Mega Man, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, etc. Some of the premier gaming franchises right there.

This is even worse than Ubisoft's online DRM mess that came with Assassin's Creed 2.

Nobody who is aware of this DRM is actually going to buy the games. 50 dollars/euros for a game with literally no replayability, that can only be played by one person (which is awkward when a parent buys the game for his 2 kids) because it simply won't let you play it a second time?

So it's not "oh you finished the game now you have to throw it away and buy a new copy", as people make it appear to be.

I see. Bad gaming journalism for the most part then.

This is why it's good for modding communities to exist because they'll take the game, hack the system, and make their own patch to remove that garbage. Or better yet they'll just build an emulated version that's free that lets you save as many times as you want. Have to say capcom after giving me Resident Evil, Megaman, and Devil May Cry i'm severely disappointed in your actions. Has it come to this where companies are so desperate to sell stuff they have to put garbage in like this?
