Cigarettes and E-cigs

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 6:51 am

So I use to smoke about a pack of Marlboro Lights every 5 days, I couldn't stand the coughing and being winded while walking. So I quit for a year and half and then I started back up on electronic cigarettes. They help because I don't cough or get winded.

I know nicotine brings its own health hazards, it's a better thing for me.

So who here smokes cigarettes or E-cigs?

Former 2-pack-a-dayer here. I quit cigarettes but I'll have the occasional cigar, usually for a special occasion.

That's good to hear. When I was smoking cigarettes for the few years that I did, I would have bouts where I coughed for a week a time then it stopped.

I smoked for 7 years (half a pack to a pack and a half a day). I never had any issues with coughing, but it was getting heavy on my chest and causing some back pain and loss of energy. Plus I was underweight. I haven't smoked anything in 2 years and 4 months. I haven't tried electronic cigs but I can tell you that it's a symbol of weak willpower, so I don't do it. My main reason for quitting cold turkey was to prove to myself that I have self-control, which I was beginning to doubt.

Eh, I tried e-cigs, but I ended up catching myself constantly smoking them.

Never smoked a grit before. Never will. I've smoked the occasional cigar but I'm done with smoking.

Quit about ten years ago (or was it eight? I forget now); more worry than apparent health problems, though I discovered more recently that it's left my arteries in not such good condition. Kind of miss it still, though I dislike being dependent on anything and I think it made my mood even more erratic.

Sometimes cigars, and I tend to grab one cigarette if I'm going out and we're having fun.

I've been smoking since I was about 15 (rebellion!). I have no plans to quit. I enjoy it, and we're all going to die some day.

Half a pack a day since I was 18. Stopped for a month when I was late 20's and for a "a few to several days" (haha) a few times after that, but at this point...screw it. Don't want to be ancient anyway. I like smoking and I know what it likely means. So far no coughing, colored chest phlegm or anything noticeable - I can even still hold my breath almost as long as I could when I was kid - but I'm sure it's doing its evil work somewhere. I don't smoke in the house so I'm not sitting in a smokey room all the time at least (cig smoke is terrible to PC's/electronic stuff too, heh...).

Thought about e-cigs a couple times. But I have a feeling it wouldn't be the same and since I'm not planning on quitting, I'd rather have the real thing.

(edit:dear fingers, please stop typing "it's" when my brain wants "its")

I switched to the e-cig about two and half weeks ago. I was surprised at how much I liked it...it's definitely not the same experience, but the pros outweigh the cons for me (such as being able to do it indoors, not smelling like smoke, having different flavors to choose from, etc).

Pack a day smoker. I've tried the e-cigarettes. A few different brands and variations. I didn't like any of them. They just didn't feel right.

Nicotine's a stimulant (though it can be calming for many people.) It's the withdrawal that has the depressant effect.

Isn't it a nootropic as well? I did better in my exams when I had some niquitin gum, although that might just be the lack of craving allowing me to focus.

Smoked for about 10 years. Quit for about 2 weeks after my Mum got cancer in her throat(possibly from smoking).

Yep, nicotine has positive effects on cognitive functioning. That's probably what made quitting the hardest for me (when I tried to quit), especially being a student.

I've been smoking for over 30 years now. However since I start work in a school in September I'm giving up. I don't think they appreciate staff nipping out for a quick [censored] break these days.

edit: forgot a common English name for a ciggie is banned

I've never smoked cigarettes (I enjoy the occasional cigar once every couple of months), though ironically I asked my friend to pick me up a pack of the foreign ones yesterday that don't have any of the added [censored], like tar or artificial nicotine. I've heard that they're just like miniature cigars, so I was interested in trying them.
