Try as I might I cannot seem to make any rollies at a workbench, has anyone else encountered this glitch?, the PC needs to be able to smoke though, mine has a bath tub full of snout in Novac with no practical application.

Is it just me, or does NO ONE, realise the guy about the health benefits of smoking was being sarcastic?

Weren't cigarettes some sort of luxury back before pre-war times?

Besides in Vegas theres hardly the life of luxury. Its more about survival and making ends meet. I don't think people would bother maintaining such an expensive habit when the biggest issue on their list is survival, you know?

I make most of my caps by selling ciggies, along with booze. This is my trading staple.

Don't let the realism killjoys take smokes out of the game.

edit: why must the regular British colloquialism for cigarettes be banned by the swear filter? grumble grumble...

Because this is a forum of american company, where the word means something quite else... :D

There were a whole lot of cigarettes everywhere in Fallout 3 too, i never really noticed until making one of characters a smoker. Have to see if such a mod (with animation!) already exists for New Vegas. I don't smoke, but some of my characters do :)

As much as I know, radioactivity kills faster than smoking, so yes, if smoking prevents radioactivity to kill you than in radioactive wasteland smoking prolong your life.

Win.

I think that there was just so much useless clutter in FO3 that the devs figured they might as well give you some that you can at least sell, not to mention being able to actually use some of that junk to build useful items.

Bravo, I say.

Cigarette packs and boxes in trash cans really are the equivilant of crappy loot in low level chests in a fantasy RPG. One would think in new vegas every trash can would already have been emptied for anything of value. Sure there is probably a better way of supplying the player with funds but what would it be.

Hmm interesting topic.

Real life I used to smoke heavily and did so whilst playing F3 (long dialogue - light a ciggie!) so found the adjustment to no smoking whilst playing F:NV a little strange, I don't find the abundance of cigarettes influencing me in starting again but oddly that loading screen with the ashtray/burning cigarette does make me want to smoke !

Gameplay wise I'm glad the weird out of place ashtrays with burning cigarettes have disappeared, esp ones found in abandoned vaults lol ! Personally I always wondered how well a 200 year old cigarette would smoke considering the tobacco would be as dry as Beatrix Russell's sensitive areas :hubbahubba:

Yeah, I always thought all the smokes would've been vaporized in the nuke war or smoked up within 20 years after since nobody would give a crap about their lives with radiation poisoning or cancer being prevalent. I am grateful a carton of smokes is one of the best barter items per weight in the game still.

I figured it would not be long before some hopped onto a 'pedastal' regarding smoking and health, it's this simple, you don't smoke, good, you will live longer than me, end of.

You may be (o burn), but 'it' is not that simple. I was referring to the insidious methods employed by tobacco companies to market their product, i.e. in 'a fashion that may encourage tens or hundreds of thousands of young people to see cigarettes as a normal, everyday consumable rather than ['a delivery device for...' (i guess i should have added)] an extremely addictive & deadly poison'. The New Vegas simulation does not come with a clear health warning, and (...radioactive wasteland aside) I haven't seen any NPCs with emphysema or throat cancer. If there was a warning at the start that said "you don't smoke, good, you will live longer than me" (or words to that effect), then that would indeed be the end of (it).

"Some sort of luxury" - love it, well put. Some people have more dollars than sense (myself included).

People, of course, can spend hours using a detailed interactive simulation without taking anything on board. They can also watch television or use the internet and know exactly what is true, and what is misleading and/or in the best interests of another party. Because if they can't then they deserve what they get, right?

Yes, actually. Society shouldn't have to babysit perfectly mentally-healthy advlts by plastering a 'right or wrong' morality sticker on everything.

This! thank you! all of the information about cigarettes is out there. there's no mystery to it. cigarettes will kill you and we all know it. if people still choose to smoke then yes they absolutely get what they deserve.

This is a 50s world.

You have to remember, this was a world which kept the different customs and values, as well as the clothing and speech, of the 50s, well after the 50s. Cigarettes were an extremely prevelant part of 50s and early 60s culture. I doubt, in the Fallout world, that much health concern was increased over them. Besides, It's the [censored] wasteland. People smoke. So what? There are a thousand other ways that they will die in the wasteland.

Stop yelling about smoking. For god sakes, it's a video game. Many people seem to assume that video games are for kids, but they are not. They are like movies in their own right, and some people just can't accept that. You want to complain about smoking? Fine. However, don't get angry about it in a video game where smoking was a part of daily life.
