Cigarettes

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:25 am

Since I can't play the game anymore without crashing, I'll take the time to vent on something: the prevalence of cigarettes in the game.

No, no. I'm not talking about cigarettes as a bad influence for impressionable minds. If you model your behavior after video games you deserve what you get.

I'm talking about the idiocy of finding carton after carton of cigarettes stuffed in garbage cans in a post-apocalypse scarcity world. Of all the things that would not be just lying around, smokes have to be near the top of the list. If tobacco fields had been reduced to irradiated waste land, smokers would be hoarding like a jonesing Smaug. Forget caps, the currency of choice would be butts. I always thought this was dumb in Fallout 3 but in NV it's plain ridiculous. I'd say 80% of garbage cans have packs or cartons of cigarettes in them.

Maybe it's an attempt at subliminal anti-smoking message (cigarettes are garbage) but if so I wish the devs had spent less time on that and more on, oh, say, making a game that doesn't CTD every five minutes.

Really doubt that's a subliminal message because there are so many NPC's that smoke.

It's a good point about there being so many cartons of ciggs laying around, but then again it's just a agme.
The thing that bothers me is that I can't light up in this game...

People use garbage cans as hiding places. There is no garbage service, nobody is going around collecting it. If you put something in a garbage can, you know it's just going to sit there.

I see where you are coming from, but as a scavenger, I don't want to see this changed. Finding a carton or even a pack of smokes in the garbage is basically like free money to me, once I sell it off.

There should be an option to 'use' the cigarette, especially now that there is the chewing tobacco thing you can craft with survival (i think) that reduces your sleep bar.

The cigarettes are like pre-war money with weight. Useless, but worth a pretty penny.

Yes I find number of cigarette cartoons ridiculous. Their locations too. Probably just not very imaginative way of supplying player with cash.

As for smoking however, there was reportedly scientific study which showed that prolonged smoking makes your lungs resistant to radioactive particles. Prevent you from getting lung cancer if you inhale some. Quit handy in radioactive wasteland :) Fallout cigarette packs probably carry this department of health warning text: Atention! Smoking prolongs your life :D

A retro-fantasy realm largely populated by two-dimensional stereotypes who wander around mouthing preprogrammed banolities while chain-smoking cigarettes...seems familiar...

Mad Men - New Vegas?

In defense of Bethesda et alia, it is fair to say that an organic description of a post-apocalyptic Vegas could include tobacco (though they would have to somehow grow it - the tobacco used in conventional cigarettes doesn't keep for very long); Nevada has the third highest rate of smoking related fatalities of all US states. Further in their defense, my game only crashed a few times. Having said that...

Really doubt that's a subliminal message because there are so many NPC's that smoke.

If I was a soulless tobacco exec with a billion dollars I wasn't allowed to spend on overt advertising in certain ill-defined formats, do you think I might spend it elsewhere? Perhaps even covertly? In a fashion that may encourage tens or hundreds of thousands of young people to see cigarettes as a normal, everyday consumable rather than an extremely addictive & deadly poison? I might even get a few stooges to post some further encouragement on the game's forum. Not an impossible scenario, amirite? Who knows.

Relax man, have à smoke.....

These studies do not anywhere state that smoking will prolong your life. The so-called benefits to which they refer can be reproduced much more safely where medically necessary. The findings generally amount to saying that lead carbonate makes a good sunscreen; while scientifically true, it will not prolong your life. In fact, scientifically speaking, it will likely reduce it drastically. The only finding of the 'study' to which you specifically refer is that an effective way to avoid inhaling radioactive particles is to destroy your lungs. Better rather to just throw out the bathwater, as you say; Quit - handy in radioactive wasteland :)

While smoking rates are thankfully on the decline in Western countries, the same cannot be said for the rest of the world, where anti-tobacco legislation is thin or non-existent. Tobacco companies have had nearly 100 years since the discovery of chemical neurotransmission to develop and improve drugs that subvert our brain's natural function; compounds 100 times more potent than anything found naturally. Combined with the glamour of Hollywood & sophisticated advertising techniques, somewhat lower availability of public education and health care, and a general absence of concern, 'most ppl' don't stand much of a chance, IMO.

If you model your behavior after video games you deserve what you get.

People, of course, can spend hours using a detailed interactive simulation without taking anything on board. They can also watch television or use the internet and know exactly what is true, and what is misleading and/or in the best interests of another party. Because if they can't then they deserve what they get, right?

After the nuclear apocalypse, everyone realised that smoking was bad for their health, and not wanting to litter the irradiated wastelands they decided to put their cigarrettes into garbage bins...along with their paperweights, coffee mugs, and in the Washington DC area, their sensor modules.

They did however, think it was a good idea to leave a lot of firearms, ammo and tool boxes lying around, as well as brooms and plumbing plungers...in case those two hundred year old drains got blocked or something....

As much as I know, radioactivity kills faster than smoking, so yes, if smoking prevents radioactivity to kill you than in radioactive wasteland smoking prolong your life.
But we really do not have to sink in to the debate of propagating health risks like smoking in videogame in which 90% of all encountered life is wiped out by player in very violent way.

Dumping cartoons of cigarettes in to trash bins is just very unimaginative way of supplying player with cash. Tons of cigarettes laying everywhere, that is simply unreal even for Fallout videogame.

I am thinking to start to ignore them unless I find them on dead enemy.

If you dont like it then simply leave the garbage cans alone, simples.

I figured it would not be long before some hopped onto a pedastal regarding smoking and health, it's this simple, you don't smoke, good, you will live longer than me, end of.
