Again, whether cigarettes appear at all in any particular game is not what I was trying to talk about, but rather the possible ways in which cigarette companies may resort to marketing them. Any nonce over the age of 12, maybe even including some of the above posters, should know about the dangers of smoking. But those that don't will not be discouraged by playing this game, and my point remains that that cannot entirely be ruled out as a coincidence where a trillion dollar industry that can not spend money overtly advertising (at least to many Western audiences) is involved.
Actually, the first time my class got a lecture about smoking was at 10. No sane teen or advlt has any reason to think smoking isn't dangerous. If someone doesn't have THAT understanding, they are either to too dumb or too young to be playing an M/18+ game in the first place. Since the game is meant to be marketed towards advlts, I wouldn't see the problem if cigarette companies WERE involved (though from a business standpoint I can't really see the benefit in encouraging unmarked packs of your project to be put in a game). I'm glad there's no overtly obvious product placements like all the Jeeps in Far Cry 2 (or the Bawls energy drinks from BOS, but let's forget that blight on Fallout's history).
Really, if we're going to worry about the game making a negative impression, let's talk about 'drugs make you stronger, faster, more intelligent, and a better speaker, (I never understood the +1 CHR for alcohol, wouldn't someone drunkenly slurring through a statement be less convincing) and if you get addicted you don't get in trouble or go to rehab, the doctor just makes it go away!'
