Classic Dungeon Crawler: Legend of Grimrock

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 1:12 am

As beautiful as Skyrim is I just find the game too shallow, don't get me wrong i did enjoy playing while it lasted but it grew repetitive fairly quickly. Anyway I just thought i'd share this link of a classic upcoming dungeon crawler game, I'm an old time gamer and remember such classics as Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master, this game seems to resemble those games but with an updated formula and in my opinion looks awesome. Can't wait for Legend of Grimrock  There's a gameplay video on the site.

That's pretty damn cool. I love updated retro games like this.

Although I suspect the dungeon crawling in Legend of Grimrock to be just as "shallow" (if not more so) than Skyrim's.

From my perspective I don't think so, its party based which adds more depth than a single character, the puzzles look more intriguing and varied than Skyrim's too. However this game should not really be compared to Skyrim as they are very different. Really looking forward to Legend of Grimrock though as it brings back fond memories of old classics. Almost Human deserve a lot of credit for putting so much effort into a retro remake, there are too few of this type of game in todays market where everyone looks at the graphics rather than the gameplay.

Yeah, I just saw this on GoG's site. Updated oldschool. I tend to get a little bored of game that's all dungeon if it goes on too long, but it looks interesting/light fun so I'll probably check it out.

Looks neat, but I think making movement square/90 degree based is a mistake. There is no reason modern games should do that They should have taken a que from one of thei inspirations Ultima Underworld which was the first true 3d dungeon crawler with no squares or 90degree limitations.

How does that add more depth? I understand that it can mean some good times, but even the worst games can give you some fun multiplayer experiences.

I love Dungeon Crawlers.

This was a reason why I like RuneScape. Dungeoneer! A skill case on Dungeon Crawling! That is the best idea I've seen in an RPG yet, if you ask me.

I also love Arena and Daggerfall for the same reason.. So thx you very much for sharing this with us!

I don't think it's multiplayer, it's a party of four characters that you make and you control, like in the classic AD&D games.

Interesting. That may be fun.

It's not modern game, it's old school classic with more modern graphics. It is stated.

Until April 11th, Legend of Grimrock can be pre-ordered from the http://www.grimrock.net/ (gives you a Steam key and DRM free copy on release) or http://www.gog.com/gamecard/legend_of_grimrock, for 20% off from either site. That's 12 dollars/9.1 euros. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/04/wot-i-think-legend-of-grimrock/ was very positive about the game, as was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzIiXx-8BHc in his video.

At that price, if you have any interest in the genre, that seems like a no brainer.

If you want it on Steam, pre-ordering a copy from the dev's site would be the best thing to do since it's going to cost you less, and the devs probably get a larger cut of the money when you buy it directly from them instead of through Steam.

If it has at least half the variety that http://www.nethack.org/ does, then it will be a blast.

Nethack's a roguelike. This is in the style of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore, with more or less fixed maps and loot and such.

EotB and LoL were inspired directly from roguelikes. Aside from the party system, fixed maps, and first person perspective, I'd argue that they're identical.

I see almost no similarities between those. Roguelikes are so different from something like EotB it's like night and day.

Maybe, but the thing is that they don't tend to have anywhere near variety of a roguelike due to being a much more rigid experience. Just figured I should mention that

A roguelike is simply a third-person, turn-based, grid-based RPG which tends to include several random elements in its gameplay.

As Doubler pointed out, EotB is a more rigid experience than a rogue-like, so maybe it is a little bit dangerous to classify it as one. But everything else fits like a glove. Some roguelikes (such as ADOM) don't even include too many randomly generated areas.

If you order it now from the Humble Store, you get immediate access to a pre-order package that includes a game map, concept art, theme music, etc.

Giving it a few more days. See if Steam comes up with some sort of promotion for the game, or not. Otherwise I'll pre-order from elsewhere. Probably gog. Also this would be my first experience with this type of video game. Hope I can play it.
