Creating a New Game erases your previous saves.

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:47 am

Are you kidding me? I really like this game so I'm not really mad but it just svcks I just lost my first character. So the point is, does anyone have a reason why this is the case? Or at least why there isn't even a disclaimer saying "Starting a New Game will erase your previous files." C'mon Man.

Edit: To avoid confusion. During the course of this thread I have found out what I did, which was save over the "Prisoner" file that the game creates itself in order to avoid the opening cutscene. And this led to the overwriting of my Manual Save. Yes I should have had 300 like someone said. Yes I should have had another 300 back ups of the back ups. Yes I should have created a new save. Like I said in the OP I'm not mad, I'm over it. I just hope that if anyone who hasn't made a new character reads this before they do now know not to Save over the "Prisoner" file.

Well it's safe to say I learned my lesson for "next time"

I made a new character and the files with original character are gone.

If you're just relying upon auto-save, then that's your fault for not actually -saving- your games. There are (3) auto-saves, and yes, when you play a new game it will start to over-write those auto-saves.

Same concept applies to quick-save (f5).

Did you make any save files for said character or did you just use autosaves?

No one should even use auto-saves and quick saves as those get corrupted fast.

Unless you're relying on autosaves (which you shouldn't be) I don't see how creating a new character would delete your old ones. I haven't had any problems.

Are you sure that you didn't just start a new x-box profile or windows user? (That is a new x-box/windows login/character. Your other profile save-games will not be available on another character/toon/login for x-box or windows. That is a security feature, stopping/limiting you from deleting another players/users data.)

Unless you, or someone, selected to "Delete old saves", in x-box... or you did "Clean up old files" in windows, which may have deleted the older and rather large save-games from skyrim...

Double-check inside the actual MyDocumants/MyGames/Skyrim folder. They may still be there, but the game may have one corrupted save-game, stopping the remaining older files from being read. If one file is corrupt, enough, the game will be unable to read past that corrupted file. (You may also see some "savegame-Auto.bak" files... those are older saves which are unseen also. You just have to rename them to the save-game extension, to see them again.)

Some-times, loading once in-game will reveal MORE than you see at the initial start-up screen. (Don't forget to SCROLL the list of saved games. Scroll-bars are not always present. This game is horrible at letting you know there is MORE content available by scrolling. The lack of scroll-bars or any indicators frustrates many people, especially in dialogue with NPC's in the game.)

Ouch... Not sure if PS3 has UNDELETE... That stinks... Horrible glitch.

Seems that creating a new-game works on PS3 by creating a new folder, erasing the contents which were once there. That is what happens when they try to use windows methods on a non-windows device. They need to research how to do it, without creating a new folder, with the same name, which is replacing the old named folder. (That is a design issue of PS3, not actually a bug. More bad programming.)

Sad part is... the data is still actually there... the game just told PS3 that it was safe to write-over. Hope it wasn't already written-over. (HD's cycle through write-spots, so it may be a while before it is ever completely gone. It just destroys the index of the file, which saves the files location data.) You would have to hack it, to restore it, if it was not saved on some form of external media.

Guess you just have to wait for a patch, or not create a new character, or create a separate user/profile for each new-game.

I have three characters I am playing. I have my original Nord I threw away after 6 hours even. The game should be fine with multiple saves. You have a problem.

People who make posts like yours annoy me, not only were you wrong, had you been right the fact that you seem to take comfort and joy from someone losing all their data is quite cruel.
