Did Shouts ruin magic in skyrim?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 5:12 pm

I really miss chameleon.

I almost never use magic, but i do use 3 shouts. Nice to have them at a single button incase you need it quick, compared to selecting it.

What on tamriel ever happened to silence spells?
Though it's lore from previous games, in this one it might be a bit odd silencing enemy mages when you can take a quiet casting perk yourself; maybe they just learned silent spells in the last two centuries...... or not.

[Welcome, have some http://www.jandersongallery.com/uploads/1/6/2/2/1622043/4377090_orig.jpg, they are very rare, all the carrots in Skyrim gained some weight during development.]

The only thing shouts ruined for me was the hype for the vampire lord.
"Detect all creatures!!! Woo!!!" There's a shout for that.
"Unnatural reflexes!!!" There's a shout for that.
"Mist form!!!" There's a shout for that.

If it wasn't for shouts then I wouldn't use any kind of Magic aside from Enchant, I have always played a strick Melee/shield/bow character in Elder Scrolls games and I've always avoided magic. Shouts allow me to use magic without having to invest much time in it.

If anything the Shouts have improved magic use for me.

THis offers a little variety, not everyone has unlocked the shouts and not everyone will be a vampire lord. Many things get useless if a character becomes a jack of all trades and has done almost every quest. But at least in Skyrim the low level spells can still be useful sometimes on high levels.

Same for me, melee and ranger characters have a little more variety through shouts. And my mage character has something up his sleeve if things get hairy.

Spells do more things than shouts, and can be used more often. So no.

i thought silence spells prevented the enemy from casting like in oblivion a lich could silence you?

Well, no, none of the effects of shouts appeared in the past games as spells, they are all unique, but on the other hand if the shouts were in the game as actual spells, there would be half as many people complaining how magic svcks.

But that's not just about shouts, many people complain how we lost so many effects, when in fact these effects are still in the game but not under magic.

Frankly, magic is not anymore the "I can do what you can do, only better" option in the game.

I don't feel shouts took anything away from magic. What does make magic feel a little less is the fact that several old spells were taken out such as chameleon, open locks, fortify spells, all those summon spells that use to be around, etc and the fact you can't make your own spells. I think that skyrim's current magic could be improved by adding in old spells but in comparision to shouts they are fine as they are.

I really miss chameleon.

Same, I loved being totally invisible on Oblivion, then talking to a guard with the Grey Cowl of Nocturnal, watching them draw their weapon, then just stad there... waiting, because they couldn't see you. Or running through a whole dungeon or ruin, full of enemies, just to check everywhere for any unique items, then kill them all without any of them being alerted... good times...

Yes,that's right. Now, however, you can cast spells silently with no problem, so why would it affect enemies?

There should be multi effect spells upon higher levels/perk tree progression.

You also have the fact that the teaching of magic is less prominent in Skyrim, and the mages guild has fallen. This means many of the teachers, books, and etc that are related to magic are lost. The only way I can think of to remedy this would be a DLC with the Cijic order.

I mean, there's a shout that makes you friendly to animals for crying out loud.

And just what the hell is wrong with that? I use it all the time when I don't want to fool with every animal I come across. I happen upon a bear or cat that wants to kill me and I can shout and make it all peaceful and just go on my merry way. How can you have a problem with that? Nobody's forcing you to use any of these shouts anyway.

I think after 200+ years, the only thing Sotha-Sil does is smell really bad.

Except for the fact that certain shouts are exact duplicates of spells I don't think the shout mechanic took away from magic. It makes sense to the character and gives him a special ability that fits the story. Some of you guys have strange ideas anyway. The whole point of the story behind Skyrim is that the main character is a Dragonborn. So you don't like that. What does it matter? That's the story. Move on to something else if it irks you that badly. I thought it was pretty imaginative and fun. I like the shouts and use them regularly. Magic also is fine other than the underpowered destruction tree which really needs some tlc in a bad way. I would always be happy with more spells if they are well thought out but what is in the game is fine.

I don't use many of the shouts but I think wrt to the MQ it works OK.

Most of my characters now don't even start the MQ and that is how I avoid shouts for them. I recommend the same for anyone else who doesn't like the shouts.

I'm not sure if they explicitly avoided duplicating shouts and spells, because there really seems to be a lot of overlap as it is.

I don't think shouts ruined magic. Not having enough types of spells to wield of the effects that were even there is what makes it not as fun as before. The damage to cost ratio is out of whack too.

no because shots have a time limit on when you can cast the next one where as magic has a very small time limit. I can cast fire ball after fire ball where as the ice form shour takes a moment

Feather is the spell I miss the most >.< honestly, I think the shouts added to magic instead of taking away from it, I mean yeah, they limited some of the things you could've done, but they opened up a whole bunch of other very fun stuff to do with just one button and no cost to mana

No, But i do think they could have released the game later to put spell creation and more spells in the game. i would rather have Spells and spell creation than a stupid 11.11.11 release date
