It may be me just speculating a bit, but I equate the answer to your question to just two words:
Superiority Complex
I absolutlely hate, hate, hate, hate it when my gamplay style is getting "critiqued" by some snot nosed 16 year old kid who thinks he is God's greatest gift to the gaming community. A lot of online gamers seem to have this insatiable need to feed their egos everytime they log in. The persistant trash talking, elitism and overall rude behavior from other online players have pushed me away from that particular community... and I don't miss it whatsoever.
This game gives players a sabbatical from the constant peer pressure of playing online. I would give my entire TES collection the "E.T. Cartridge" treatment if Bethesda ever implemented online gameplay in any of their future ES series of games. That's how adamant I am about this topic.

I went over to a friends house and I have never played Call of Duty online yeah I know I play Call of Duty but we played with the headphones off because of the morons on there. It could be a need to feed their ego, and I will play co-op not MMOs but I will play co-op with friends alone on games that is made for that. It would be annoying to have somebodyy cuss you out because they killed you and you hear that person every five minutes.
I like the sabbatical I get from my RPGs I have always loved them and I will continue to love my single player games, why because I enjoy games for their stories and I enjoy The Elder Scrolls for their stories and lore covering several thousand years and I can make up my own characters and stories within the lore. I also have friends that tie our lore together and that is an interesting twist on things.
