DLC = licence to rip-off what ever happened to expansions?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:41 pm

Considering no DLC has even been announced yet for Skyrim, isn't it a bit early to criticize Beth about this. We don't even know what they have planned, and if the HD pack was any indication, the small stuff might be made available for free.

At least they didn't pull the day one DLC for $10 stunt Bioware is doing with Mass Effect 3. Reading the drama queen thread about it on BSN was entertaining, though.

That's fair. I suppose I'm just going on their less than glowing history with these things but then again it's true now of all big publishers. DLC rules all. Money talks bulls*** walks I bet when they made Spinal Tap they didn't expect to be so visionary.

I think they're probably embarassed by horse armor. They got a lot of flack for that. It was a new idea at the time, and I doubt that they'd make the same mistake.

DLC = Expansions

DLC: Downloadable Content

Expansions: more content able to purchase from a retailer.

If you download any content no matter its size it is DLC I can categorize Skyrim itself as a DLC because I downloaded all of Skyrim of Steam therefore Skyrim being DLC.

This trend that DLC is always small needs to end because the internet that can handle large files and transfer for pretty much nothing anymore of course things such as Xbox Live and its 2GB limit prevents such.

What the hell is wrong with you? It doesn't matter how you access the content what we are talking about here is DLC content is incredibly minor and inconsequential content made available for the hopelessly gullible whereas expansion content is traditionally a whole new experience for an established game. Which part of that is confusing you?

Hey, I agree with this completely.

It definitely seems to me that your the one who's confused but I can see where your coming from alright, here's the deal as has been stated many times now, u keep calling DLC small content BUT as others have sed it's Downloadable Content MEANING whatever it is IS Downloadable Content whether expansion or whatever u think is DLC, Big or small it's DLC... These expansions are going to come in the form of dlc unless u wait for a goty disc.

expansion content is traditionally a whole new experience for an established game.

Like I sed before, I'm sure thar working on it, 2 or 3 from what I'v heard

I don't understand your argument Priestly. There isn't any DLC for this game yet and none has been announced. Why are you on here arguing about small DLC as if it has already been made available. Can you look into the future or do you know something that none of the rest of us do? Why start an argument before you even know what we're getting unless you are just hear to stir things up? It's silly.

Man I haven't been on the Skyrim forums in awhile. DLC is the same thing as an expansion in a sense. People love to [censored].

In a sense you are correct. However even though an expansion can be viewed as DLC, not all DLC can be viewed as an expansion.

What he's crying about are things like the horse armor that was released as DLC for Oblivion. Horse armor was DLC but certainly could not be considered an expansion. See the difference? People actually paid seperately for what was nothing more than a slight cosmetic change. It was a total rip off. That I could see complaining about. However, we know nothing about what they have in store for Skyrim so complaining at this point makes no sense. Making a suggestion I could understand but complaining as if it had already been released is silly.

No you act as if DLC = "incredibly minor and inconsequential contnet" no matter what if it called DLC it's small to you. That is a LIE DLC can be as large as Skyrim itself and it is. The reason why DLC is viewed as small as you make it out to be is because using the internet was not a cost worthy way of getting content to its consumers so it was either minor so less to host/distribute or nothing at all and release disks or cartridges with additional content. Today can you host and distribute entire games for nothing compared to as it use to be.

Any expansion that BGS creates all of it will be DLC again DLC =/= small if its content and downloaded its DLC. As stated by Ebony the GOTY edition that will include the content that is created and released will be in a disk most likely but that content can still be categorized as DLC because pretty sure if I bought whatever they release it would install automatically through steam.

So again. DLC = Expansions in this age anything can be transferred over the internet for a measly fee which could not be done 10 or even 5 years ago.

What he's crying about are things like the horse armor that was released as DLC for Oblivion. Horse armor was DLC but certainly could not be considered an expansion. See the difference? I do find it rather silly myself, especially if this TES.. if people are to this point of begging/pessimistic about content being released something has gone wrong with the base game Skyrim "should" be the most bang for your buck in the current market. Of course the other alternative is that people are use to early DLC as BF/COD/AC/etc has and expect the same from Skyrim a larger game of all the mentioned franchises but still does not seem like it since these types of threads are common

I don't mind paying close to the full price of the original game for a good expansion and Beth has produced some amazing expansions in the past but this DLC crap has got really old really fast. I don't want to pay for a handful of side quests with a half assed attempt to tie them together as a story I would like to see a whole new dimension to the game with a brand new area that goes off on a tangent from the original game.

Why don't people make expansions anymore? Because they have realised that people are basically very stupid and will pay them a ton of money over time for DLC that takes a week at a time to knock out to the public and lasts a couple of hours if we're lucky. We are our own worst enemies.

actuilly, the line between DLC and expansion with skyrim is really thin, the Tod has said that they are going to make the DLC so big that its close to expansion level so no its not just a few quests, its nearly expansions there releasing. now is when i state they are taking forever the DLC must be good. i for one will enjoy it :)

You always have the option of waiting for the inevitable Skyrim Ultimate (or whatever they decide to call it) edition or just not buying if you don't think its worth the money.

I always wait for the Game Of The Year Edition. I don't know if I actually save money, seeing as I buy to copies of the game, but I feel Bethesda's game are large enough that I can wait a year or two before indulging in additional content.

All we know of the DLCs is that they will be similar to the size of Fallout 3's DLCs, which is large enough for me.

Most developers don't make expansions anymore, there's more money in little "DLC" purchases. Just one of many reasons I don't buy them.

DLC and expansions are not the same thing. DLC is designed to extend the life of the game (and, according to developers, keeping the team paid) by spreading out smaller additions over a certain periode. DLC is distributed exclusively through the internet.

Expansions, back in the old days, were just what the word said. Expansions on the game. More often then not it became a whole (albeit smaller) game in itself where the setting was different from the main game. Think Throne of Bhaal or Shivering Ilses. Good (and populair) expansions did more then add a few bits of armour, a quest or a NPC. It built something entirely new.

For publishers, the DLC is vastly more profitable, you don't need to be Adam Smith to figure that out. A relatively cheap distribution system is one of its charms. The other, of course, is keeping the core team paid (and not having to move them on to other projects). But I suppose the real boon for publishers is that DLC is designed to add little things which were conceived earlier but cut - either because of deadline or the prospect of using it as DLC.

I, for one, vastly prefer expansions. I always pay for games I play, and expansions on good games are welcomed by me. I rarely see it worth it to purchase DLC. I've been following what Bioware/EAware has been doing and I'm not impressed. Who really cares about a crappy extra piece of armour, weapon or shallow NPC? I'd rather pay for more creative effort then that.

Unfortunately expansions as a business model appear dead and considering that a lot of gamers are hungrily buying substanderd DLC, I fear that is the way of the future.

I agree, The DLC from companies has gotten ridiculous. *Cough* Frostcraig Spire, HORSE ARMOR when everyone in oblivion already had shadowmere. I bought most the DLCs for Oblivion thinking after KoTN and shivering Isles I'd get about 2 hours out of each and they turned out to be un-needed houses to dump money into. I don't want crappy ways for them to tape together a bonus pack and sell it for $10. I'm hoping for something great. 10 hours at least

An expansion is DLC. What you're talking about is larger DLC versus smaller DLC, but there's really no need for the name difference.

Well now it is.

But you didn't download Knights of the Nine which is wrongfully dubbed as a DLC, and Shivering Isle couldn't be downloaded either, at aleast at the time they came out.

For Skyrim, I'm not buying any DLC unless it's a pretty decent size, like on Shivering Isle standards. No small [censored] that I can blow through in an hour.

Excpet all the DLC was released in a form available from shops and the expansion was available as DLC. I still have my disc with KotN and all the little DLC for Oblivion. Except for Dragonhorn Castle, but Bethesda gave that away for free to members of this forum.
