DLC = licence to rip-off what ever happened to expansions?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 11:16 pm

I don't mind paying close to the full price of the original game for a good expansion and Beth has produced some amazing expansions in the past but this DLC crap has got really old really fast. I don't want to pay for a handful of side quests with a half assed attempt to tie them together as a story I would like to see a whole new dimension to the game with a brand new area that goes off on a tangent from the original game.

Why don't people make expansions anymore? Because they have realised that people are basically very stupid and will pay them a ton of money over time for DLC that takes a week at a time to knock out to the public and lasts a couple of hours if we're lucky. We are our own worst enemies.

You're argueing sematics. Who cares if they call them DLC or Expansions. The trend is for more, smaller additions to the game, rather than package them all together into one expensive package. If you feel like you have to buy absolutely everything that is made for the game, I can see why you're bitter about the modern approach. Buy what you feel is worth it. Quit buying anything you don't. It's really easy to understand.

Anyone who knocks out something in a couple hours that they paid $10+ is just stupid and shouldn't even be listened to.

Meh...something along the lines of shivering isles or point lookout would be ideal imo.

You always have the option of waiting for the inevitable Skyrim Ultimate (or whatever they decide to call it) edition or just not buying if you don't think its worth the money.

Are they? That would be great news if true. I suspect you're talking about DLC though.

It's not semantics at all. They are selling tiny additions to the game at a comparatively high price as opposed to a brand new lengthy adventure that feels like a new game in the same setting. You talk as though you have never played an expansion but were delighted to hear there was some exciting new horse armour for Oblivion.

so by your logic someone who is good enough at a game to beat it in a couple hours is stupid? and because chris krietz beat oblivion in 75 minutes he should not be listened to?

as for expansions you will be pleased to hear that they are indeed releasing 3 expansion sized dlcs similar to point lookout and shivering isles... im guessing they will meet in between and make a world bigger than point lookout but smaller than shivering isles... i believe they will focus alot on the land of skyrim though (like how in point lookout you have to bring the krivbeknith to the dunwich building in the capitol wasteland)

I'd prefer proper expansions that could actually be purchased in a store with paper money, myself. I don't like online transactions.

An expansion is DLC. What you're talking about is larger DLC versus smaller DLC, but there's really no need for the name difference.

I would pay $70 for any skyrim expansion without blinking, even if it only had a couple quests...

technically a large DLC is catagorized as an expansion.. and because expansions did come first i believe it is valid to seperate the two... even just to keep the conversation less confusing

That's a step in the right direction. Thanks for the info.

No it isn't, it really isn't. ALL DLC is 'small'. I would rather they didn't release any DLC at all and instead put all their efforts into an expansion which was effectively a new game in the setting of Skyrim. I don't want a two hour DLC that means absolutely nothing to the original game and is forgotten as soon as you asked yourself why the hell you bothered with it.

DLC = downloadable content

an expansion pack, automatically become a DLC if you can buy it and download it from the web

Nothing has even been released yet. Why all the anger?

The fact that they're taking awhile should give you some hope, if anything. They're not rushing content.

Greed and customers that will buy tiny DLC no matter what are the reasons why expansions are a thing of the past.

Considering no DLC has even been announced yet for Skyrim, isn't it a bit early to criticize Beth about this. We don't even know what they have planned, and if the HD pack was any indication, the small stuff might be made available for free.

At least they didn't pull the day one DLC for $10 stunt Bioware is doing with Mass Effect 3. Reading the drama queen thread about it on BSN was entertaining, though.

An expansion pack raises certain expectations beyond a sidequest with 'interesting' new weapons exclusively available in this DLC. People expect pretty much a new game from an expansion. From a DLC they expect horse armour and a hidden mages room that the dev's 'forgot' to put in when they released the game but decided to charge you for the friggin thing anyway. The fact you can download any expansion that might appear has f*** all to do with it.

at the rate that bethesda is working on DLC, by the time they finish the third expansion it could be well into 2013... long time support is comforting... but waiting 5 more months for the first expansion is not, especially when we dont even have a valid clue what it will be about yet... I honestly couldnt care less about the bugs/ glitches in skyrim, they are way worse and more frequent in fallout, and they already patched skyrim twice as much as they did oblivion... so please bethesda stop fixing amusing glitches and start working on new content... they still have not patched the duplication glitch in oblivion, so why all this patching for skyrim? its already relatively bug free (especially considering its a bethesda title)
