DLC = licence to rip-off what ever happened to expansions?

You can download expansions, therefore expansions are downloadable content.

I don't mind paying close to the full price of the original game for a good expansion and Beth has produced some amazing expansions in the past but this DLC crap has got really old really fast. I don't want to pay for a handful of side quests with a half assed attempt to tie them together as a story I would like to see a whole new dimension to the game with a brand new area that goes off on a tangent from the original game.

Why don't people make expansions anymore? Because they have realised that people are basically very stupid and will pay them a ton of money over time for DLC that takes a week at a time to knock out to the public and lasts a couple of hours if we're lucky. We are our own worst enemies.

I applaud your psychic abilities...when the DLC is finally released we will all know what you know.

My favorite game for add on content is Total War: Shogun 2. They have small, dlc for a couple of dollars such as the sengoku jidai unit pack, ikko ikki clan pack, but then they have the large dlc such as the rise of the samurai, which is set 200 years earlier, and the soon to be released fall of the samurai, which is set 300 years later and is a complete overhaul :)
I hope skyrim goes this way, for example, things like dog armor as well as things like stopping the thalmor in their home or something..

Agreed.

Tribunal, Bloodmoon, and Shivering Isles are the way to handle it.

+1 to this ^

DLC = Expansions

DLC: Downloadable Content

Expansions: more content able to purchase from a retailer.

If you download any content no matter its size it is DLC I can categorize Skyrim itself as a DLC because I downloaded all of Skyrim of Steam therefore Skyrim being DLC.

This trend that DLC is always small needs to end because the internet that can handle large files and transfer for pretty much nothing anymore of course things such as Xbox Live and its 2GB limit prevents such.

This, the high resolution texture pack was 3GB, that is half the size of the game and three times the size of Shivering Isles.
Yes it was only an texture pack while SI was almost an separate game.
Main reason for making it download only it that they keep more of the money from the sale.

Sigh... The words DLC and expansion are interchangeable. At worst, it's a cheap useless item package released to make more cash for the devs. At best it is a whole new game, like an expansion. Ever played Shogun 2 Total War? Look at the Rise/Fall of the Samurai DLC.

The simple answer of why we get smaller DLC then expansions is purely the publisher wants as much revenue from a title as possible nowadays.

IMO only two developers nowadays put out any decent sized expansions and they are Bethesda and Rockstar (on both of Rockstars biggest titles this gen they put out what i'd call proper expansion packs - 2 in fact with GTA4).

While i dont believe Bethesda will do something like horse armour i dont doubt we'll get smaller paid DLC as well as an expansion pack or two.

Disciple

I'd prefer proper expansions that could actually be purchased in a store with paper money, myself. I don't like online transactions.

Sadly i think the days of buying expansions at shops are gonna die out soon - as internet gets faster and HDD's being standard on any gaming platform its just easier for them to push stuff over the net (and i'd guess bigger profit margins for them too).

I hate small DLC. As a rule, if it isn't big / significant enough to go on sale in a retail store in it's own box, I refuse to buy it,

Fortunately (horse armour incident aside) Bethesda aren't as bad as some companies. Just look at Paradox interactive. They release incomplete games then sell [censored] like Mongol faces and faction shields DLC right after release. If they didn't make such good strategy games, i'd refuse to buy anything from them out of principle.

I take offense to that, Paradox is easily one of my fav. devs. Take HoI3 as an example. Sure, you have useless stuff like Dis Irae: G?tterd?mmerung, but then you have Semper Fi and For the Motherland.

As I said, they make great strategy games... but you can't really defend their apalling approach to DLC.

Why the HELL couldn't the mongol faces be put in the full game instead of being released separately as DLC on the same day? Explain that to me. You can't, because it's [censored].

What game? Paradox could have been just the publisher.

I believe Howard has stated in interviews that they plan to support Skyrim for a long time and that they also want to put out bigger expansions compared to Fallout and Oblivion. So your worries are unfounded.

Eh, well he said bigger DLC's if I remember correctly.

Around the size of Knights of the nine is what they are aiming for. I'm pretty sure I remember Todd saying that.

Review the DLC and/or expansion when it arrives. Is it not to your liking? Don't buy it.

From a DLC they expect horse armour and a hidden mages room that the dev's 'forgot' to put in when they released the game but decided to charge you for the friggin thing anyway.
If you refer to the Orerry in Oblivion that really pissed me off

Expansion, DLC...Who cares? It's the same thing. So call it what you want. The size makes no difference to me. I will pay the little tab for the small stuff and the big tab for the big stuff. I plan to buy it all, just like I do for ANY game I am in to. Horse Armor was far from useless. It IMPROVED your horse.

Besides... it was only $2.50. What the hell do you expect?

so you'd pay full price for an expansion but not 1/4 price for a dlc 1/4 the size? I don't understand

DLC = downloadable content

an expansion pack, automatically become a DLC if you can buy it and download it from the web

Oh, really? I guess that means the base game is DLC since I downloaded it.

Well by content it's usually meant extra content. And most likely all the content are going to hit Xbox Live first so they are most definitely downloadable.
