well the consensus among biblical scholars is that all four canonical gospels were originally written in Greek
so it does fit, especially if he has a non-English bible

Thanks for correcting that fatal error, Cookie. Obviously, 300 is a work of fiction, but it did retain a lot of the original story of the battle.

Matthew may have originally been authored in Hebrew, but the only versions we have proof of in the modern day are in Greek.

Possibly a bit more importantly, John (whence that quote comes) is the only one of the canonical Gospels clearly intended for a non-Jewish, probably Neoplatonic audience.

Aramaic was the common vernacular at the time, almost the universal language of the lands encompassed by the Persian Empire (even Sanskrit of India takes its cues from Aramaic, I believe).

EDIT: In fact, at the time of Christ, very few spoke Hebrew anymore throughout Judea.

Not that odd actually if you consider that the Romans essentially absorbed the Greek Empire. They even went so far as to adopt most of their gods and religious practices, albiet with changed names in most cases.

That makes a lot of sense considering the Roman Empire of the real world was much more warlike than the Greek Empire.

I would not call Hellenistic Greece the Greece Empire, the things you mention pre-date the Hellenistic Period.

Besides the Romans were pretty easy going with religion, its not strange they adapted several Greek Gods ... worked out just fine until they made Christianity the official state religion and we all know how well THAT turned out in the end for them.
