Does "unattractive" mean physically ugly to you?

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 2:45 pm

Many people assume I mean physically ugly when I do not.

I can think someone is drop dead gorgeous but still unattractive due to their attitude or behaviour.

How do you interpret it when you first hear it?

When it is said without explanation I usually assume it's physically for the most part.

No. When I don't like someones attitude, I just think they are a [censored] or an [censored].

Unattractive to me, means i have no physical attraction to them. Doesn't mean they are always ugly, but it depends. And people find different features (physical) attractive. So it all depends on whom thinks it.

I use attractive/unattractive regarding appearance, otherwise I will be specific. As in "She is not very attractive but she sure has a great personality". Just because someone doesn't look like a classic beauty doesn't mean I am not attracted to them - and vice versa.

Unattractive means the same for me as you've described it for yourself. Great minds think alike. ;)

No, a girl with a horribly foul mouth is unattractive to me.

For me it's a bunch of factors. For example: a woman could be insanely gorgeous but if she has the intellect of a [censored] slug, that would make her unattractive in my eyes.

Agreed there's nothing worse then hearing a very attractive girl using the c and f words.

Agreed - there is nothing more off putting for me than that kind of thing. If she was good looking I would still refer to her as attractive but it doesn't mean I would be "attracted to her". (If you see what I mean - )

If somebody describes another as 'unattractive' then I instantly think 'ugly'

That's not to mean that I'm under the illusion that "unattractive" solely means "ugly" - it's just its most common usage by far.

Unattractive means much more than simple physical appearances. It can have a lot to do with attitude and other factors as well. Case in point: there are a lot of people who may not be super models and whatnot, but are very attractive because of their personality.

If there is no explanantion, when ever I read "unattractive" usually means not very good looking, but I agree, if with explanation, the person can be drop dead georgeous and still be unattaractive. Problem is, it needs to be described properly to say someone is unattractive but still be pretty.

Without explanation I'll defer to physical qualities or lack there of. It sounds weird to say someone has an unattractive personality. There's so much words out there with more finesse that can be used to describe mental attributes good and bad.

When someone uses it I'll usually assume that's what they mean, but it makes sense if you're not attracted to someone due to non-physical factors

Dude it can mean both things.

You can be physically and psychologically attractive/unattractive.

The first one is pretty self explanatory, the person (let's say a girl) isn't attracted to you on a physical level. This isn't important however.
The important one is the physiological attractiveness. You've probably seen your share of beautiful girls with average(or ugly) guys and wondered what she sees in him.

Point is; if you can spark a psychological attraction in her you won't have to deal with being physically attractive.

oh, shoo. Look at that, I've turned it into a relationship/dating thread. I apologize my fellow forum goers.

It can mean both things, but next time, ask the person if you're confused.

For me it means 'the whole package'.

Whether the deficiency stems from the exterior, interior or a combination of the two, it's what I say when I'm not going into specifics about someone. ie "I'm not attracted to that person."

Specifics are that; descriptive in nature, so I won't use 'unattractive', I'll just say 'fugly', 'irritating', 'ditsy' etc. etc..

"Unattractive" is not just physical. It's their entire product display. Somebody could be beautiful but does repulsive things, that classifies them as repulsive and "unattractive"

I use the words interchangeably, in normal speech about one's looks.

Ironically, I consider myself unattractive but not so enough to be ugly.

Personally, I use attractive/unattractive to describe physical beauty and character.

Actually, I don't use those words because I don't speak in English IRL. :P

Undesireable because of psychological, emotional, or hygenic reasons.
For example, a man can be absolutely handsome, have filthy hands, be verbally disparaging, and impatient, it will turn me off immediately.

The more I find the pleasure of a person's company in demand, the more I find them physically attractive.
Someone I dilike being around, for whatever reason (usually attitude) the more repulsive physically they become.
