Don't make Super Mutants dumb..

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 12:13 pm

The West Tek research facility is hit by warheads, breaking open the FEV tanks on levels four and five and releasing it into the atmosphere. Once exposed to radiation, it begins to mutate and infect humans and critters in the wasteland and dooming the player character in F1 and F2 to endure hordes of random encounters.

soooooooooo explain this one for me then????????

I don't understand, what is it you want explained?

Too many smart super mutant is cheesy to me. Doesnt make much sense. The few gems they do add with intelligence are great and different. I think Fawkes and Uncle Leo were enough for FO3.

Different coasts, different strains of FEV. And Lieutenant was a special case anyway.

Yes, Lou was essentially a mutation of a mutation, particularly in the brain area. Freak of freaks with his brain power. One in a billion.

Nah.
You could take untainted FEV virus and apply it to any wastelander and it would still result in stupid super mutants.
What you need is untainted people.
All creatures in the wasteland have been infected with an airborn FEV strain that's mutated with help of the radiation.
So.
To make a smart super mutant you need FEV (I don't think it matters if there's some radiation in it) and a pure human (Vault Dweller, Enclave).

i thought you needed both.

I'll find smart Super Mutants odd, as I've only played FO3 and hence only known them as dumb brutes. But I'm getting the vibe that they were intelligent in the originals.
Being able to talk to a Super Mutant (other than Fawkes) will be good, and surely lead to some very memorable conversations. Hopefully, anyway.

i thought you needed both.

Both of what?
1 Untainted FEV.
2 Tainted FEV.
3 Pure Humans.
4 Mutated Humans.

IIRC you can create smart super mutants with both tainted and untainted FEV as long as you have pure humans.
Whether or not the human will survive the process and mutate into a super mutant is a while another story.

I think it may depend on the intelligence of the normal who is being dipped. On Vree's autopsy report she noted that the individual mutant's intellect was decreased by 30%. Now this may have simply been a result of that person not being a prime normal, but President Richardson states in Fallout 2 that they did manage to create super soldiers with the FEV before the Great War (implying that there were Super Mutants created pre-war) and they also came out rather stupid; thus I'm not so sure it's a matter of "purity".

Bethesda/Obsidian should really get the fallout bible going again.
Would be nice with some confirmation on what's the official canon.

I think at this point, Canon is 'what me make in game goes'. I found the Fallout Bible a good read IMO

@Talonfire- IIRC, The FEV subjects were soldiers and prisoners, mainly people no one would miss basically, and it failed, and someone leaked the FEVs existence, and it caused a [censored]storm across the country. I vaguely recall reading the somewhere. I want to say it was the Vault, but dont quote me on that

you are right but it also says that they kept testing the FEV and it began to work better each time leading up untill 2077 and once it was struck the FEV virus itself and all its progress began to become mutated thats why we have werid creatures.

i would love to see a scenerio were you find your self stuck in a vault that has been working with a diffrent strand of the virus (or a totaly new one) but instead of making them dumb. the virus would mutated them and increased what that persons strength was originaly.

for exemple if you were an agile person you would mutate and have a body that allowed greater spead and jumping capabilitys. and this would include others, such as people who were strong or intellegent.

and with this you could creat more diversity with the mutant, and have a quest were the difrent types are fighting amongst them selves and chose what side you will help with each there own unique rewards

But we've already had a vault that did FEV experiments.

FEV is really rare and so far it's been in V87, Mariposa Military Factory and West-Tek AKA The Glow.
It can't be everywhere. >_>

So ...

You didn't talk to Harry? I don't know about you but he certainly didn't seem all too bright to me.

That's very well understated. He was almost too stupid to survive. "I am a ghoul I just dressed up really snazzy today!" Yes that option can work. Although their ought to be a somewhat better number of smart ones. I'm thinking at least half-a-dozen new ones. Also you need to be able to engage them in conversation at least once otherwise it hardly counts, does it?

A clever super-mutant follower would be interesting.
What would be even more interesting is to chose if yes or no, you want to become a super-mutant with the pros and the cons of the FEV. (Pretty much your charisma and your intelligence takes a real bad beating but your endurance and strength go sky high.)

It's an ugly stereotype that all super mutants are dumb, and most of you are hateful bigots!

There will be both intelligent and dumb super-mutants. If you want all super mutants to be intelligent then you will break the story of Fallout.
