Dragon Age apparently getting Multiplayer

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 4:00 am

My mistake, Bioware hasn't done a ton of multiplayer.

Hasn't done a ton? NWN was the best cRPG ever because you got both multiplayer, construction kit and something that was like a Game Master client to use!

I was incredibly disapointed when I learned that DA wouldn't have multiplayer because I felt like Bioware was dropping the single most interesting feature of NWN. There's also no doubt I spent far less time playing DA that I could had it included multiplayer like NWN.

I'm guessing people are confused about the multiplayer in Bioware's older games and in Dragon Age. For their older games, it was essentially co-op and modding that allowed you to play in someone else's game or have people help you on yours. The multiplayer in Dragon Age will apparently be your typical deathmatch, team deathmatch, etc. that seems to be less important to the story. At least ME3's multiplayer will have something to do with the story, but this just seems to devolve into random multiplayer just for the hell of it. Take a look at Bioshock 2. It is a great game and the multiplayer is enjoyable but you get the sense that it just felt tacked on and diverted resources away from improving Bioshock 2's single player.

That's a common confusion on these boards, it seems. People say "He, wouldn't it be nice if Skyrim had multiplayer?", meaning in the style of Baldur's Gate co-op or NWN's private servers with a GM-mode client, and half of the board goes ballistic, thinking they want CTF for Skyrim ...

Although I probably won't use the option, for as long as it's a co-op mode similar to the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights games, I don't mind at all.

Besides DA multiplayer would just be mashing the awesome button until an enemy dies. Because DA is now a hack n slash.

More or less.

So much faith lost in this series. :shakehead:

8 years ago, I mean I suppose that some people working on SW:TOR could be helping too but it that's a bit different then the multiplayer they are shooting for in Mass Effect 3. They could even be getting help from outside companies but I still fail to see why it is necessary to add multiplayer, other than to appeal to a larger crowd and make more money. In the half a dozen Bioware games I own not once have I said, I wish this had multiplayer. So to me I'm a little upset that they could just be wasting time money and effort on it instead of focusing everything they have on SP. Unless my memory is a little off, I seem to remember ME1 and 2 doing fine without MP.

It's all just a clever scheme from EA to annoy Activision. First it's BF3 vs MW3, then it's TOR vs WoW, and now it's going to be DA3 vs Diablo 3 :P

For me the Dragon Age series begins with Origins and ends with Awakening. As far as I'm concerned, Dragon Age 2 never existed

It's not that bad. I take it as a half-decent, quick spin-off game. Like i take Alien Resurrection as a half-decent fan-fic :teehee:

Anyway, i'm one of those weirdos who judges only after he sees it, but i don't like the implication of SP resources being diverted to multiplayer, because i don't multiplay. Except on console game where to the only way to communicate with people is to shoot them :P

It isn't, it's Deathmatch BS so no co-op.

I stopped caring about the dragon age franchise as soon as #2 hit the shelves.

Heavy emphasis on the word franchise

Alright, apparently you are somewhat new to Bioware games. They don't need help with multiplayer games.

According to people who have played the ME3 MP, no, no they dont.

Shattered Steel was a team deathmatch and co-op. BG 1 and 2 multiplay, well you can see people skipping dialogues everytime, then go for hack and slash and spell tosing madness. I'm not seeing the issue with these sort of multiplay.

That being said. Everyone old school was hoping for the phenomenal NWN style multiplay, but apparently it's not happening. Would it be bad to at least have some IWD, BG, Shattered Steel style multiplay? The entertainment business has always been about making money, SP, MP or story driven whatever you want to call it, they have thousands of employees to feed. You want them all to be artist and eat dust for you? Get real.

PS: Skyrim's future patch for PC is about to be something very similar to NWN it seems.

That's according to a very unreliable source. We don't know yet.

Considering similar unreliable sources said ME3 was getting multiplayer, I'd say this is at the very least likely.

Come to think of it, with DA2's enemy spawn method, they now can have quests like "Collect X amount of item Y."

Nah, with the launch of the big MMO they will last longer.

I'm sure that's what Origin Systems thought...

Considering how much Bioware has fallen, I was wondering when they would add those dreaded fetch quests.

Does this mean we can look forward to all future titles being called "Something-or-other of the something-else"? "Dragon Age: Return of the Warden"; "Mass Effect: Revenge of the Reapers"; "Dragon Age 3: Monosyllabic Response of the Qunari" etc. :bonk:

Well, NWN patches tended to add a lot of content to the game. I doubt that's what they mean though, unless they mean "DLC == patch".

Bioware isn't going anywhere under EA. There may be a glimmer of hope though, hopefully EA will have seen Skyrims' Behemoth sales figures and realise it's not multiplayer that makes money, it's a well designed RPG with a lot of content, which is what DA3 won't be.

As much as we'd like that to happen, I doubt it. Skyrim was in development for a long time. EA apparently sees that as a bad thing since they will miss holidays and will make the game unprofitable after a certain amount of time. Seeing as how games with multiplayer have usually done a bit better than most single-player games, EA isn't likely to change anytime soon.

EA also rather likes its yearly releases, even though they admitted it was quite bad for the quality of their products. A five year release schedule goes against everything they stand for.
