Supposed to hit here in NC early tomorrow morning, my dad just got from putting out sensors on the coast for the USGS. He said people are all on shopping sprees and some are even boarding up.

Hmm. I'm supposed to have a job interview in DC next week. I wonder if they'll still be there. :P

What's so funny about my name? (Though I suppose if said out loud it does kind of sound like "hurricane"... )

People are over panicking in my town.It seems they don't understand what a voluntary evacuation means.

Whoa, it's going to hit you pretty hard. How you people manage to live peacefully with the threat of a natural disaster is beyond me. Last time I've been in the middle of a hurricane [not exactly the way we're used to call them here] I was scared to death.

I didn't get that, but I did Rane = Rain haha.

Everyone I know around here keeps texting me and sending me messages asking if I'll be alright and whatnot. Getting kind of annoying.

99% of the time, hurricanes they predict to hit us go up the Carolinas and veer off into the ocean (think of the coast as a ramp haha). I guess most of us have just grown accustomed to big hype and no storm. I'm sure this one will definitely hit and be worse, but I'm not freaking out about it.

What's the point of being scared? It won't change anything.

I thought Hurricane Irene was related to an intense storm we had a couple of days ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5fM4PN4JOk&feature=related#t=186..it sums up how intense the lightning show was.

Also, haven't we had a Hurricane Irene before? What about something new like Hurricane Lacrquisha or Becky?

I went down to the beach today ( awesome waves ) and there were houses boarded up and sandbags, I heard the National Guard was around but didn't see any myself. The trolley I rode there and back on is closed tomorrow. There was some writing on the boards which was hilarious, like "Leave us alone Irene!" and stuff like that. I also heard we might lose power from 3 to 7 days. I think I'll go mad if that happens

From what they're saying my area will see 5-10 inches of rain and 65 mph winds. The worst will have died out by the time it reaches me but I hope that the other states are safe and prepaired for it. Watched the news earlier today and they are calling this the storm of a lifetime....yikes.

dammit, im from south florida visiting the philly area. came here to get away from the storms and now this. :ahhh: hopefully it won't be too bad. worst part (i hope) will be loosing power for a few days.

i agree that the media has a tendency to waaay overhype this kind of thing. imho this is more like storm in a teacup.

I'm glad that it's missing us. I'm in North Central Florida and I see way too many of those things.

Just because of the hurricane we learned this in Spanish class :P

Hay una advertencia de un huracan en la este del pais. Or something like that

I would say coastal North Carolina and Virginia as well as DC. But it's only a category 1 so all in all it's not really more than a big thunderstorm. I remember going swimming during Hurricane Ivan which was a category 5 :P

Well I live in the southern part of Brooklyn, NY and so far today everyone was acting normally; and Bloomberg hasn't told us to evacuate. I heard that Coney Island has been evacuated though. I believe that upstate and New Jersey are going to be hit the hardest. They usually get the worst storms.

I wonder if that was related to the ridiculous rainstorm we had up here on Wednesday...

Still, I think people over-react to hurricanes too much. It may be different in highly populated areas, because flooding does a lot more damage, but I've been through plenty of hurricanes, the worst is always lack of power for up to a few weeks once. Trees fallen everywhere. Still, no real fear is needed. Evacuate if it's expected to hit hard, but don't worry to much. Boredom is the main the drawback.
