Ebony sword - Hardly any blade?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 2:30 am

Dude.. What? I honestly don't know what you're complaining about. You have 6 different "western" style blades to choose from. Most of which are Unique weapons.

You do have a choice.
Oh, surely, I can continue using blades I've used the entire game and choose not to use the blood of a god for my sword. It's like skipping out on Valyrian Steel.

And you know that how? Removal of certain game mechanics doesn't necessarily mean removal of Lore. Unless they explicitly said otherwise.
Absence of proof isn't proof of absence.

You have no imagination.. Eorland is an old man in the Skyrim game. There is no reason that he wouldn't travel, and learn about different weapons, and armor in his youth.

And just because the books that we have available to us(the player) in the games doesn't mean those are the only books in the "world".

That makes absolutely no sense.
Again, no one in Whiterun knew about Curved. Swords. I gave a good argument for why Eorlund doesn't know about curved swords - your argument is "well he could have traveled..." even though everything about the greymane questline suggests the Greymanes and Battleborns don't leave Whiterun. And no imagination? Just because I like consistency and reason over "just because" doesn't mean I don't have imagination. Nice personal attack.

Yeah. The Glass weapons, and Elven blades are pretty hideous.
I agree that Elven weapons (except battle axe) aren't made as well as they were in Oblivion, but what is this about Glass ones? Glass weapons have never been in TES as pretty as they are now.

Curved swords are not "Asian", they are quite common across cultures and continents.

I agree on this. I think the Glass weapons in Skyrim are superior to both Morrowind and Oblvion's Glass weapons. I also like the armor better than Oblivions. I don't know if I'll ever get over Morrowind's glass armor though, especially the helmet. Morrowinds was more "light" though. Much of the light armor in Skyrim seems like it would be under a "medium" class if it still existed. Like dragon scale.

I disagree. I liked the gleam of Morrowind and Oblivion's. Skyrim's feel too blunt and clunky, while Morrowind/oblivion's feel like they'll give you a very nasty cut.

Dude. I am not seeing the issue here.

Here are you options for powerful non-"asian" blades.

Chillrend

Dawnbreaker

Nightingale blade

Mehrunes Razor.

Plus every single axe, mace, and hammer in the game.

Absence of proof isn't proof of absence.

Wow. That was a horrible reply.

"No one" in Whiterun knew? So you asked every single NPC in the "city" whether they knew about curved swords?

Whelp! I see no way that I can refute this.

And no imagination? Just because I like consistency and reason over "just because" doesn't mean I don't have imagination. Nice personal attack.

Not an attack, just an observation.

End of Thieves Guild quest. One handed sword.

Dawnbreaker
Granted. One handed sword.

Nightingale blade
Near-end Thieves Guild quest. One handed sword.

Mehrunes Razor.
Dagger.

Plus every single axe, mace, and hammer in the game.
This is a discussion about swords, so this point is entirely moot.

I felt it matched the quote it responded to.

Asinine response. You can't communicate with the AI as if it was intelligent. Also, they're nords. Nords know straight edge swords. Went off the guards, who also live there.

Not an attack, just an observation.
You're very confrontational.

The blade is too thin for my tastes, it doesn't have to be a broadsowrd but it and the two handed version seem like half bladed staffs to me lol. The length of them are fine though the blades are actually pretty long.

So you're argument is about two handed blades? Well we get one two handed blade as an artifact. The Ebony Blade.

And guess what? Its always been a Katana.

Oh man.. I'm gonna need some ointment to treat this burn.

You can't communicate with the AI as if it was intelligent.

Exactly. That's why you claiming that no one in Whiterun knew(including the Graymane dude)about Akaviri blades is absurd.

You're very confrontational.

I guess?

You're more feeding my point. The craftable two handed ebony sword is a katana, or a sabre, or whatever you want to address it as. The Daedric two handed sword is a sabre. Though I find it awkward how some Daedric artifacts change appearance from game to game while others seem to remain the same. I wonder if there's a reason for that?

But it isn't. Since the AI can't be interacted with, the developers have to leave clues to set the theme for any setting. The guards saying the bit about "Curved. Swords." is one such clue to set the stage that curved swords are a foreign idea in skyrim - so much so that it isn't just Whiterun. I think every hold's guards mention it that way. Really, it isn't a hard concept to grasp.

Well, it is said to be the crystallized blood of the gods, so I guess it would make sense to smith it into something really different from the more "basic" shaped swords. Maybe it was made for looks, and decided that making the blade curved with an odd handle would make it look better.

No. I like it. They've been in TES since forever. Deal with it.

I mean in Morrowind we had Tanto's, Wakizashi's, and Dai-Katana's. I like "Japanese" blades in my TES, and they're gonna stay.

Don't like it? Mod it out.

I'll have to side with Treng in this argument. Having the choice between a Daedric Dai-Katana and a Daedric Claymore was nice in Morrowind. As well, you're beginning to show signs of immaturity in your arguments. "What now?", "Wow. That was a horrible reply." and "Ohh ointment for the burn" aren't ways to defend your argument. Now you're just putting down the other poster in an attempt to make his opinion invalid or unimportant.

Exactly. That's why you claiming that no one in Whiterun knew(including the Graymane dude)about Akaviri blades is absurd.

As Treng said, guards have been a good standing point for the opinions and knowledge of most of Skyrim's population. Not knowing about the availability of curved swords plays strongly into Skyrim's culture having a lack of these. They don't even have a high population of Pirates.

BOOKS.

Most books in-game are very old, or delve into topics that are old. As well, many books are considered in-game to be false or ancient folklore. And not everyone in Skyrim reads.

yeah, honestly the katana is more than little 'out of place' in this particular game. I mean, if we're going to have a katana running amuck, might as well make a few 'dragonball z' dragons running around... which I'm glad they don't. silly. All the same, having different style blades is okay I suppose. But really- the ebony swords don't look asian to me.

Don't be ignorant its not out of place. Skyrim is populated by many races not just nords give it a break.

Would you please point out an akaviri living in Skyrim?

also you have no place to argue ignorance. I've laid out a thought out argument with evidence suggesting that Skyrim's holds know nothing of curved swords until the events of this game.

I wish the ebony sword looked a little more like the ebony greatsword. Or, and i'd prefer this over anything, have several styles of each material so each weapon feels less common. Plus, if anybody should be getting more attention its ranged weapons. Definitely looking forward to crossbows in Dawnguard, but the return of throwing weapons would be awesome

No your just trying to give reasons why something you don't like should not be in "your game". As if the game should be made to please you. There are weapons for everyone in the game.

I'm certain that's what we call a strawman.

But to end your strawman, I'd like to reference you to the second page, wherein I posted something akin to "choice is king, and being force fed is wrong."

Where does it say the Greymanes never leave Whiterun? I remember leaving Whiterun to rescue that one guy with Avulstein Greymane, and if siding with the Stormcloaks, Vignar going to High Hrothgar. I also know that Eorlund is a merchant, who has most likely seen ebony weapons due to the fact that he sells them. And it seems highly unlikely that he became Skyrim's greatest smith by making iron daggers all day - he had to know something about smithing, at least more than the common guard.

Being kidnapped isn't quite the same as marching off. Even still, let's assume that you're right - that the Graymanes do travel skyrim. That still doesn't explain how every hold's guards occasionally say Curved. Swords.

Merchantile would be a good argument if the blades weren't wholly forgotten and if the guards weren't so taken aback by the idea that a sword isn't always straight.

I am sure your some of your arguments are valid. but at the end of the day its still a fantasy game. Its not based on an actual culture being that we have magic and dragons. So let the people have their swords.
