Evidence of Mr. House's Lasers

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:00 pm

Okay I just found this. If you go to the El Dorado Gas Station and look west you will see a billboard. If you stand directly in front of it, that is, you make your line of sight a 90 degree angle to the billboard itself, you will notice a large hole. Through this gaping hole, you can just make out the Lucky 38.

This is what I think it is right? Mr. House was shooting down nukes, and one of his lasers shot the sign. That's what it is right?

Maybe, no real way to tell though. Even though I would think if it was one of House's lasers it would have done more than just blown a hole in it.

I kind of imagined it like that scene from Real Genius (I think that's the name. The one where they invent a Laser, and use it to cook a bunch of popcorn) where they fire the laser and it just keeps going, burning a hole through a statue, and a billboard, and the wall...

I would like some more evidence of these lasers. Right now we're just supposed to believe he saved the city with them, but we don't see them anywhere. Pretty major part of the story behind New Vegas.

Well he would hide them and or take them down. I mean, would you walk into a place that's supposed to be all fun and games where there are gigantic laser cannons on the roof? I for one wouldn't. Besides it might throw off the casino, strip look.

Couldn't those 4 ball thingies be the lasers?

I've been thinking about that. It's hard to tell if it was there pre-House's purchase of the Lucky 38. My theory is they were already there, and House converted them into hidden laser weapons.

Well I doubt a pre-war casino in the middle of a civilian city would be built with lasers, so yeah Colonel, you're probably right.

This is actually pretty interesting; I had forgotten how Vegas made it through the bombardment.

Mr. House lived in the House Resort in Camp Golf (before the war). Then bought the Lucky 38 casino.
I may be wrong.

Ten bucks says they never existed, and the Chinese targeted the Vegas area with more like 7 warheads.

The lasers are on the roof of the lucky 38, they probably retract into the roof. H

New Vegas is far to intact, someone had to have shot or otherwise disabled the incoming missiles. If you were standing beside me I'd take your bet and then your money as you have no evidence to support your theory.

See thing is
Spoiler
Mr.House knew about the chinese targeting new Vegas and thus prepared for it. When you talk to him he even states that they tried to bomb Vegas but he shot down/blew up most of the missiles, letting just a few get by although they never hit Vegas or the surrounding area.

I think Raul mentions in dialogue he could see Mr. House's anti-missile weapons firing all the way from Mexico City.

this is correct. and mr house doesn't lie, so if he says he has lasers that shot down most of the warheads, then he did.

Awww, isn't that dandy then.

Honestly, can't see why so many people (not in this thread) complain about Fallout 3's setting being ridiculous and inconsistent, when we're supposed to believe from 2 or 3 people's dialogue that House had these lasers.

If House wanted to successfully shoot down any incoming missiles, he would need to position the laser system a ways away from Vegas (airbursting a hundred nukes over Vegas isn't a very strategic move), and directly under the flightpath. In the Big Empty, maybe?

I don't think they are on the Lucky 38, because by the time they are in line of sight then its too late, frankly.

Firing a laser at a nuke wouldn't make it go nuclear ;) The lasers are on the L38's roof...

If memory serves, the lasers were a last resort for the few that his networked mainframes couldnt disarm, the majority he states, his networked mainframe predicted and force transmitted subset disarm codes, likely making them little more than useless hunks of metal when they hit the ground. (I don't know much about nuclear warheads so they might not just fall harmlessly to space.

Also, if his lasers were seen in Mexico City, his weapons are firing into space, since the earth is round, you likely wouldnt see the lasers at lasers a few hundred feet in sky, they were likely akin to Hercules Bradley, the weapon the Enclave used in Broken Steel. Truth is, apart from a little dialogue from two Pre-War figures, we don't know much about Vegas's sparing of the bombs, likely done to keep an air of mystery.

Edit: Also, who says the lasers arent on a rotation platform?

@Jolipinator- We arent taking 'a few peoples words' on this, we're going by the fact that the Vegas region of the Mojave is largely intact, with 4-5 spots where nuclear warheads in outlying areas hit.

Colonel, you're right. He disarmed most of them and shot down the rest.
However regardless of whether fallout nukes are fission or fusion ie 'atom bombs' or 'hydrogen bombs' firing a laser at them or shooting them down in any way will not set them off...

Not sure what you mean by a rotation platform though. The lasers are mounted on the roof of the Lucky 38...

I'd always thought House built the lucky 38? would be quite hard to buy a building with a footprint that big and 'then' build the underground facilities that it has...

Oh right, yeah. So my desk is made of wood. I guess that means it was built by Aliens.

Something's existence does not justify any backstory people make for it. I'm not saying the lasers don't exist, I'm saying I want more proof. More than 2 or 3 characters mentioning them.

The problem with your want is that the ghouls who witnessed it are either feral or outside of the games range. But to fill you and Doom in best I can. Before the war, the Lucky 38 was the biggest name in Las Vegas, according to Raul 'that place was a legend before the War.'. So it was a very famous casino, somewhere between 2062 (when House predicted a War inevitable within 15 years) and 2077, House purchased the casino, according Beautrice, the ghoul at the Mormon Fort, she stated House seemed charming in his interviews, and a Captain of Industry, until he became a recluse, either making last minute preperations, or having been in the life support pod by then. Either way, when the bombs began to fall House took action, disarming and or firing at the bombs falling from orbit.

However, your firm proof is that Vegas was spared of the atomic bombs, the damage to Vegas was due to 200 years of societal collapse and lawlessness. I really don't understand why you would believe the Chinese spared Vegas or anything else. Between America and China, it was an all out slugging match. They wouldn't spare Vegas on any grounds that I could think of.

@Doom- Well, the Lucky 38 penthouse and coctail lounge were revolving, it's not inconceivable House might have used the rotation mechanisms to spin his lasers to the appropriate direction.

Oh no that I agree with, I thought by rotating platform I thought you meant 'located elsewhere'.
I still stand by my theory that House had the L38 built from scratch though.

The problem with that theory is that if you look at the beginning of the New Vegas intro, there's a poster in the Lucky 38 reading 'Viva Las Vegas 2025!', Robert House was born in 2020. He'd only be five at that time.

Yeah thats a problem, however perhaps thats why that particular poster doesn't appear in the game?

Nah, it'd be to noticable in Pre-War Vegas that House demolished and rebuilt it to his own needs. I'm sure House used some of the same kind of people who built CoG bunkers and etc.

Personally, I think House retrofitted the Lucky 38 to his needs really. It's a shame House didn't get the Platinum Chip in the beginning, I bet Vegas would be a Pre-War region if House had gotten it.
