Expansion vs DLC

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 1:02 am

I rather have Point Lookout styled expansions. I want to explore and salvage places.

you think PL had a lot to explore ? PL wasn't really an exploration dlc, once the quests were done, which didn't take that long, 7 or 8 hours or so if that, there is nothing left to do, there wasn't any large building complexes in the game at all, almost every single enterable structure was basically a one room deal, the bank, margaritas shack, the "wherehouse" there wasn't anything to explore, the couple caves in the game were small as well, there was nothing on par with lets say, the capitol building, or the apartement complex from the pitt, or the roosavelt academy, alexandria arms, the chryslus building, the red racer factory, the robco facility and on and on, there wasn't one town, one settlement, so i hope they don't make anything like PL again, and the map area was 50% water. seriously the pitt had a lot more exploration in a much smaller geographicaly sized area, so if anything i hope they make something like the pitt but 4 or 5 times bigger.

Look at dragon age, so many DLC's with not much content. The expansion is good though.

I loved dragon age, but haven't purchased anything yet. The "expansion" is reported to be really short. I'm waiting for the $5 deal. I can wait.

I can't resist an expansion of a game I like. But DLC... well, I don't recall ever getting one anywhere.

Oh for the love of god just stop already, every time someone mention PL you complain about it.
We get it, you hate PL, but others don't, deal with it.

:obliviongate: obsidian seems to be addressing most of the things from FO3 that needed fixing, especially the skill, perk and special system, so i'm optimistic, if you add all the dlc's together from FO3, lets say 50 bucks worth, they only added about 15 hours of gameplay, and with not a lot of repaly value in any of the dlc's if any really, i want an expansion thats kinda more like the regular game just a new area, there should be a few settlements, a large area with plenty of big complexes to explore and some good battlezones, like in front of the capitol building, takoma industrial or la enfant plaza, it takes a while to kill the supermutants in those areas if you take your time and lay traps etc, ambush or whatever, and they respawn so its fun to go back later on if you want.

my opinion is as valid as yours, every time i read how great PL was, i'm gonna point out it wasn't great. you're in no position to tell me i can't voice my opinion. as much as you don't like hearing PL wasn't any good, i don't like hearnig how awesome it was. this is a game forum, so deal with other peoples comments a little better. i am pointing out the shortcomings of PL, they are all valid. half the map was water so i don't like hearing how huge of a map it was. there were no large structures or complexes to explore, thats makes it small DLC.

Episodic are what the market demands. It may not be what a lot of consumers demand, but it sure as [censored] is what the market demands.
@wrstoftherockies: Shut yo noize, mr negativo. PL was the best of the DLC, in this brutha's humble honest opinion. Cuz, you know, my opinion is just as valid.

how was point lookout not an exploration dlc? it was the only dlc that gave a big place to explore of all the dlcs for fallout 3. the whole point of PL was to explore the island, note why the story wasnt that good and like the pitt but the pitt was not good for exploration the place was tiny. and like you said PL took lik 7 to 8 hours, the rest of the dlcs were 5 at the max. plus it was a nice change of scenery

but i can understand you about how there was no big city, i wished there was one in PL, but im kinda glad there wasnt since i think that would make the feel of the island not as creepy. maybe in NV they could make a dlc where we go to another big city like the strip but well have to wait and see

We live in an era where we don't even need to go to stores to buy expansions. That's all done right there on your console or your PC now. And when people are hungry, and they finish what they have, they want more. Episodic satisfies that sweet tooth, keeps the public happy and full. And we WILL buy it. That is truth.

I guess I'm a part of dying breed then 'cause "episodic" - in this context - doesn't really do anything good to my appetite, rahter just encourages alcohol consumption. :P

Think of it from a business point of view rather than that of a mere gamer, the consumer. You want those coals to stay hot, and keep people playing, keeping the excitement aluve until it's tine to move on. The coals can cool, and you can heat them up faster with an episodic, than slow cooking them while your audience strays to other venues. When you're hungry, it's better to go get a burger than to wait for steak. That's where the money is, and money is 1/2 the lifeblood of the industry, if not the project itself.

Oh, I understand the point. I just disagree with it. The way I see it, it's not the gamers place to think about the publishers wallet but his own - and more over, the enjoyment/experience that one seeks which, in my case, isn't one part of the 3-piece meal per day, so to speak.

[censored], son, we're consumers. We're programmed to think the people who provide us goods are ripping us off, while not considering the logical reasons that behind what we buy, there are people with whom our dollars grant the ability to continue working.

If I'm offered a good deal, my program says "error" and I don't feel like being ripped off. And then there's the matter of, why should I want to directly/indirectly support people that are "programmed" to produce banol [censored] that the market is filling with? Is there some reason to care about if that can continue happening? Nah... I don't know. Maybe I just have a tad too selfish view on this.

my opinion is as valid as yours,

Of course.

every time i read how great PL was, i'm gonna point out it wasn't great.

... You know that's on the border of spamming right?

you're in no position to tell me i can't voice my opinion.

I'm not telling you not to voice your opinion but you're starting to get spammy.
You've already voiced your opinion on PL 4 or 5 times in this thread already and every time it's the same thing.

as much as you don't like hearing PL wasn't any good, i don't like hearnig how awesome it was.

Dude, you could rip all you want on PL for all I care.
But saying the same thing every single time a person mentions PL is getting irritating.
And so what if you don't like hearing about how great it was. People have different opinions.
I don't like hearing people rip on MZ but there's not much I can do about it.
It seems like you want to force your opinion down on other people at this stage. (Or maybe it's just my imagination)

---------------

So, to shorten it, you have just as much right as anyone on these boards to post your opinion.
The difference is that you've voiced your opinion and don't like it when others have one that contradicts yours.

----------------

And don't get me wrong, I understand what you dislike, I didn't like that most of the map was under water either.
I didn't like that there were no bigger buildings to explore or that the boardwalk wasn't a town. (or at least a small settlement)
I didn't like that there were so few quests and that there was no explanation for the smugglers in the area.

So in a way I agree with you, PL wasn't that great.

Agreed, If developers want us to shell out hard earned cash we should really get the most bang for our buck. We all know that all the DLC's for FO3 weren't awful but they weren't really anything go crazy over, all had their own merits & cons.

I think Expansions are definitely the route to go with a game like Fallout, You can capture a much larger area of the world and really add a lot of content and when it all boils down that is all we want in the end good, quality content that is worth every single cent we put down for it. :tops:

I can agree to it working like that. Though, I'd also like that the symbiosis would be to my benefit too if I am to be a part of it (and with that in mind, isn't a healthy bit of selfishness just legit?).

I'd rather go for a large full-blown expansion such as Shivering Isles for FALLOUT: New Vegas compared to a weak DLC. I wouldn't even mind a few expansions and some minor DLC which perhaps adds certain elements or low-key areas. Perhaps the DLC adds a couple more NPC's for some various quests in pre-made areas whilst the EXPANSIONS are full-blown new areas.
