Expansion vs DLC

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 4:23 am

I'd rather have a full fledged expansion. I wasn't particularly impressed by Fallout 3's DLC due to the small size and complete lack of polish in the final products. You have to wait longer for expansions true, but it's generally worth the wait in my experience. None of the Fallout 3 DLC felt particularly worthwhile.

I'm happy with whatever Obsidian wants to do - assuming there is additional content. Expansions allow greater depth and DLC allow greater variety, both of these have their advantages :)

I agree with this...i will still buy them whether it's DLC or an expansion :)

Also in your poll, you should of added either/both aswell :)

I would probably want a larger expansion, considering Ii just got all the DLC except Zeta, and was not really satisfyed with any of them due to short length and lack of usefullness... (Except BS was usefull for new perks and 30 lvl cap)

I love expansions. I get them for The Sims 3 all the time and they are veyr popular. I hardly ever get the stuff packs EA sends out. I want a new place or new thing to do when I buy an expansion and I would much rather they come out awhile a part then a bunch at once.

You guys do realize that you payed $60 for 4? DLCs that maybe added a total of 8 hours of gameplay and if they made expansions like The Sims does you'd have another couple of weeks of gameplay for $30.

Wrong?
Here's how many hours I got out of each DLC on my main character playthrough.
O:A - 5
Pitt - 4
Broken Steel - 7
Point Lookout - 10+
Mothership Zeta - 6

And I thought that the DLC's were 50$.

And for fun let's take how many hours in total I've spent on each DLC through different playthroughs.

O:A - 25+
Pitt - 20+
Broken Steel - 20+
Point Lookout 40+
Mothership Zeta 15+

I'd rather have a full-fledged expansion, but DLCs take less time and resources and cost more, so they'll probably go for that route.

Depends on the cost. I was going to get FO3 and pick up the expansions seperate (before GOTY was released) but didnt like the price for what I was getting. Waited a couple months and got the GOTY edition with all expansions packs for $50 where I would have spent over $70 if I bought a couple of the DLC`s seperate

Now if we can get the full game for say $50 and get the expansion pack for under $30 ($29.99 and less) then I will go for that otherwise I will just wait till theres a GOTY edition if there is one to get all the stuff for a lower price.

You want 3 kinds of dog armor for 2 bucks or a huge, vast addition to the game for 20?

I paid $60 and The Pitt didn't take me four hours to play. Point Lookout sure didn't give me 10 hours. Maybe four at the most.

Except the total cost for all 5 (not 4) DLCs were 50$ that added way over 8 hours of gameplay.

I agree, DLC packs and Expansions are both great and I'd be happy with both I'm just saying that I prefer an Expansion over the normal DLCs because they can do a lot more with them.

Holy crap! Man you must play SLOWLY. This is how much time I got out of each (except Zeta which I didnt even bother buying), and thats searching every nook and cranny and doing everything I could find to do. This is on one playthrough on a lvl 18-24 character big guns and power armor character.

O:A - 2hrs
Pitt - 3hrs
Broken Steel - 3hrs
Point Lookout - 4hrs

They were all WAY too short and small...

^Agreed, Although since I found all those god forsaken steel ingots in the Pitt it actually took me like 6 hours or so to fully complete it everything else is basically spot on for how long it took me to beat the other DLCs however. :tops:

If all DLC's they create are like Point Lookout (I'd prefer that they be a little bigger though) then I could accept it but no more one way run and gun dungeon crawlers or Broken Steels.

But I'd like an expansion as well.

PL wasn't big, i keep hearing people say how big PL was, give me a break, it didn't take that long to do the quests, the map area was mostly water, the rest of it was still water because it was swamp, there wasn't one town, there wasn't one settlement, there were no large buildings to battle in and explore, the couple cave systems were small, there were only a few small houses, margaritas shack and that repair guy, a few tents by the beach, it wasn't that big so i wish people stop acting like PL was some big dlc, it wasn't, sure the map area was a decent size, but half of it was water, it takes about 5 minutes if that to get from the boat to the detention camp at the top of the map, it ain't big, the enemies were just bullet sponges and not that fun to fight, i had way more fun fighting the enclave and supermutants and talon mercs than i did hillbillies and ghouls. there wasn't a lot to do there except the quests and they didn't take 10 hours to do, you can do the velvet curtain in 30 minutes if that and the manison one with the tribals in about 15 minutes max, so enough with this stuff about how big PL was.

Discuss.

I'm talking about a single expansion vs several pieces of DLC.

Thats very interesting, I'm undecided about that, definitely food for thought, ok lets go for expansion because we've had several DLCs for FO3. Why not try something else :)

All depends on how you play the DLC's.
I said that I got that much out of the DLC's.
Not that it was the standard norm.
I'm not saying you guys rushed them, maybe I was slow.
But TayciBear said that all of them combined gave around 8 hours which is completely false (Unless everyone rushes through them >_>).
But maybe it was 8 hours for you...
I dunno really, I guess that when I read your post I misinterpreted it and took it as if you were saying that it was a fact that they all combined gave 8 hours.
Sorry man.

And westoftherockies for gods sake press the enter button once or twice man, walls of text are a pain to read.

And no I'm not saying PL was BIG and I never did, I said I liked it's size the most among the one's that were released and even then I'd like it to be a little bigger.

I can also do the Fo3 main storyline in less than 3 hours, doesn't mean its short.

Also, the number of settlements and structures does not determine the size of a DLC.

Neither?

Uh, right... I would rather have one or two Shivering Isles style expansions than five or so DLCs.

That would be nice. Point Lookout and Broken Steel were big, but an expansion could be the size of FNV's world alone, but without as many missions or characters.

most of PL is water, you think its a big dlc because of the geographical size? it takes 5 minutes to get to the detention camp from the dock, so don't pretend thats big, its not, there is nothing big about PL. its bigger than the other dlcs georpgrahy wise, the actual land area is pretty small once you subtract the water. the pitt had more going on than PL. there is way more exploring to do in the pitt, and the pitt is a pretty small area.

I would rather have dlc's because it gives you something to look forward to, and because even though i beat the game before OA came out so I made a new guy then when The Pitt came out a made another new guy and so on. And even after Mothership Zeta i made 2 more guys. the DLC's add more than just how long they are. They make you want to play the whole game again because like I said when OA came out i had to make a sneaky guy because of the Stealth Suit.

You realize that an expansion would give you as much to look forward to if not more so? There can be a lot more done with a whole expansion over a small, most likely linear DLC. (Don't get me wrong I loved the Fallout 3 DLC's but I was always expecting more from them and I always felt like I should have gotten more out of them for the money I shelled out)

I'd prefer something like a large expansion, I could wait a while for it to be perfected & polished I don't need DLC every two or three months. :tops:
