If I have time I use the carriage system to travel to the nearest city and go on foot from there, or go on foot all the way.

But sometimes I just feel like going to for instance Blackreach and then Ill fast travel to the nearest elevator.
I also use fast travel to return to a city when I am nearly overencumbered.

Is there a better road map anywhere? I end up fast traveling because I miss a turn somewhere. The spell helps but even it gets confused. Had me going back and forth over the same bridge.

I have always been fast travelling, but it seems like its possibly the worst thing to do, because you miss so many stuff that are hidden and the beautifulness of skyrim.

So do you think I should stop fast travelling?
And what are your thought on it, yay or nay?

I never used fast travel unless it was legit. Like siltstriders in morrowind and the mage guild transport. In Oblivion there where no such things except the tower addon so you could only travel to a town and not back. I never used fast travel in Oblivion and the game was massive and in the end I have seen every corner of the game.

In Skyrim i also didn't use fast travel at first. I did the thieves guild first (didnt bother then with main quest at all just like I did with the other TES games) and travelled by horse or foot. Occasionally I used the carriage if I had to go from Riften to Markath but that is legit as it is a transport in the game. And even so I used it 3-4 times only. After the thieves guild quest and 50+ side quests I had almost every cave/castle/dungeon discovered and cleared. Would I have fast travelled I wouldnt have seen most of them. After 160 hours of play I had the entire map discovered. Then I did the companions and didn't fast travel still.

Only after that, I did the main quest and used fast travel then since there was nothing new to discover. I saved the game but I felt like I rushed the main quest this way. Now I joined sides with the empire the wipe out the petty rebellion and don't use fast travel anymore. Also, because the quests from the guilds and main quest are rather short, you finish them real quick when you fast travel.\

So in short, for me Fast Travel is evil unless it is a legit way of travelling by means in the game (ie. carriage/teleports/riftways). Also there is so much to discover in the game and to kill so go out there and enjoy the scenery.

Hmm I am on my way to falkareth from solitude. It's going on nicely, and it seems fun. Do you guys use horses? (oh and by walking I mean is on foot, run and walk)

I only use a horse if i don't plan on having a character that uses alchemy. Otherwise its footwork.

I don't fast travel ever, but I use carriages a lot. Feels more real that way - something that explains the "safeness".

I use fast travel pretty much any time it's practical, unless I specifically want to take time side trekking to put new explore points on the map. Otherwise, I'd prefer to spend the time actively doing things.

I was dead set against fast travel when it came out as a feature in Oblivion. However now I have become used to it, although I do not completely depend on it. Sometimes I want to explore certain areas so I fast travel there or to a town nearby, I see that as no different then paying for a ride in Morrowind.

Although I wouldn't mind if sometimes random events happened as you were traveling by carriage. I think it would add to the immersion of the game.

I used it a lot in the beginning to get the quests finished and see the story lines through. But since beating nearly all of them, only the companions left, I've taken to limiting it to carriages only. This way I feel like i'm utilizing an in game method as opposed to an available 'mechanic'. Though with 150k+ septims I've got to find something to spend it all on. Was using horses till I got shadowmere, now I don't even buy new horses.

I have only a problem while trying to play without fast traveling: itens! So many itens to sell, and spells i need to buy. I tried, but i coundt resist  I did it

But isn't it tedious to get from solitude to riften?

Tedious for some, epic for others. Depends on how you play and what you want out of the game. I never fast travel, although I occassionaly pay for carriage rides. Wandering the countryside is the most fun part of the game for me.

Can you take a carriage anywhere, or just cities/towns?

I use a lot of fast travel because I do my best to preserve as much content for future playthroughs as possible.

If only fast travel can be replaced with dragon mounts.
That would be horrible.
It's like saying you want Argonian mounts.

OT:
I don't use FT since it's simply silly.
Only carriage and on foot (foot mostly).
I personally don't like horses ince I find them dumb (they fight with you - something a horse should not do, they have froced 3rd person and you can't fight while on the horse).

I've just bought the Kingdoms of Amalur and my biggest complaint is the lack of fast travel.

Fast travel takes the fun out of exploring such a huge world, but it does have some uses.

Carriages are great for going town to town in a jiffy. though i usually only use them when doing Thieves Guild side quests or a random quest that sends me from one end of the map to the other. (walking from Riften to Markarth and back can be a bit tedious)

Sometimes when i'm feeling lazy i'll fast travel, but more often than not i'll walk.

I use fast travel for everything! Warp to Theives guild, to the college, to whereever and extremely frequently. Yet I'm going to have to say Nay. If there was a hardcoe mode that forced me to eat, drink, and sleep then my opinion would be yay because then it would be walking I didn't do myself but still was walking.

If i'm just messing around for fun, I sometimes fast-travel... but on a serious playthrough - no, never. It spoils the game and completely undermines the idea of an immersive open world experience. Besides... questlines in Skyrim are short as it is. Beaming yourself straight to the action constantly makes them seem even shorter.

It bothers me that Bethesda even make such a detrimental feature so readily available to the player. The gameworld is fairly small, so carriages alone would suffice. But if they feel they must include fast-travel as well, I think it should at least be something that's off by default with an option to activate it in the game settings (same goes for markers), to encourage players to play without it and experience the game as it should be played.

As things stand, they're effectively shipping out the game in vastly inferior mode by default.
