Fast travelling: yay or nay?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 11:30 pm

I have always been fast travelling, but it seems like its possibly the worst thing to do, because you miss so many stuff that are hidden and the beautifulness of skyrim.

So do you think I should stop fast travelling?
And what are your thought on it, yay or nay?

I usually fast travel only for selling stuff at different cities, on my second char I have a house in riften and there's no smelter, so I fast travel full of ores to use it.
For the rest I never fast travel.

The longest I haven't used fast travel was like 25 minutes.

I have tried both ways and decided that not fast traveling is more fun.

Limit your fast travellig to carriages. Only allow carriage fast travel for places you've been to before. That gives you some more exploration.

Don't use too much fast travel, that can ruin entire game experience.
Trust me, I know.

I only fast travel to get from one side of the map to another for a quest. Other than that, I walk. I will even pick a FT location that is not near my destination so I can walk part of the final leg.

For just exploring? I Run the map, walking is too slow.

I find that Fast Travelling can take away from the tone and scenery from Skyrim. I will walk when I am not in a hurry to do something or its close buy. I like to buy my way across Skyrim and not Fast Travel a lot.

But isn't it tedious to get from solitude to riften?

I do not fast travel and never have. I think that you miss out on some stuff and that I want to make the game more of a challenge.

You can buy your way across with a carriage. 20 to Major holds, 50 to Minor holds.

I've only used carriages for getting between major cities. You're missing a ton of stuff by not walking around.

Also, on the "Isn't it tedious to get from Solitude to Riften?" question: no. You travel like you would if you were actually going there. You'll make stops along the way. You may find a quest that needs to be done. You may find some treasure. You may just want to kill every passing traveler. It would only be tedious if you ran, day and night, without stopping at all.

not really, you'll meet lots of NPCs and enemies on the way, and it's a chance to explore new areas

No fast travel for me.

1st: You miss so many random things
2nd: It spawns Dragons all the time

Is there a better road map anywhere? I end up fast traveling because I miss a turn somewhere. The spell helps but even it gets confused. Had me going back and forth over the same bridge.

Not really. I just walked (well, ran) from Solitude to Whiterun in 5-6 minutes, not counting a few distractions along the way. It's only as long again to get to Riften from there. If you need to get somewhere quickly, get a horse and ignore all the enemies along the way.

I use Skyrim's fast travel to create an 'imaginary carriage travel' system. I'll roleplay that carrriage-less places like Dawnstar and Riverwood do have carriage travel. If my character wants to quickly travel from, say, Septimus Signus's outpost in the Sea of Ghosts down to Riverwood we would travel on foot from Septimus Signus's cave to Winterhold, then fast travel from Winterhold to Solitude, take the carriage from Solitude to Whiterun and then fast travel from Whiterun to Riverwood. Somewhere along the way I'll pay 50 more gold to a merchant than I have to, to simulate the missing carriage fees.

For me, this is a nice, workable compromise on those days when I want to accomplish quest-related goals but don't have much time to play.

Do I think you should fast trave? I think you should do whatever makes the game fun for you.

Until someone makes one, you will have to learn how to read the topography of the existing map. I can tell where just about every road will be on the map by looking at the terrain. Hint, they are always in the valleys or low areas between mountain peaks.

However the local map clearly shows roads that are near you.

If you can't see the roads on the ingame Skyrim map. Pull out a physical map, if you have one. It helps time to time and I double check key points for interesting things.
