I'd say Farewell to Kings, just for Xanadu. I love that song.

Great album. It's hard to choose with Rush because while everything from 2112 to Moving Pictures is gold (I'd include Signals as well but I think I'm in the minority), but everything they've done has at least one weak track on it. That's why I picked Hemispheres, I'd say it's the most consistent of the lot.

It's either Piper At The Gates of Dawn, or something by Justin Bieber.

Bieber? Are you kidding me? Oh wait, I think you are. PATGOD it is. :)

I never really liked any album as a whole more than others, but if I had to make a choice by the album art, it would be skillet-Awake. Most amazing cover art I have seen in a long time.

Signals is easily my favourite Rush albumn.

My favourite albumn is probably Wasting Light by Foo Fighters. I adored every song on that albumn.

Meddle and Live in Pompeii do.

Live in Pompeii blows away everything else they did imo, it's just so good.

I always do a double-take at that GSYBE album title - I keep thinking it's some weird way of expressing a swear-word before I remember, "Oooh, F sharp!"

:)

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

Nothing will ever come close to this masterpiece. Nothing.

I think Meddle beats it by a lot. The only weak song is San Tropez, and that was a lame last-minute add-on anyway; the rest of the songs are fantastic, and Echoes is a true masterpiece. If we're talking Pink Floyd (we've already talked gsy!be) I'd probably go Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, Division Bell (I know, so what), Animals, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, Ummagumma, Darkside...

And it's amazing that of all of us here there is absolutely no consensus on a favorite Rush album. I love that.

Favorite is a tough one, there are a quite a few contenders I can think of off the top of my head but not one that jumps out at me. I can however very easily give you two that the were "Holy [censored][censored] this changes everything!" while my jaw was on the floor the first time I heard them:

Appetite for Destruction - Guns and Roses

Straight outta Compton - N.W.A.

Both were genres of music I liked but both albums were so beyond anything around at the time they were almost like new genres themselves (which really is the case with NWA).

I've got first New Zealand pressings (maybe not worth as much as first UK pressings, but still pretty good in my books) of Meddle and DSOTM :D

I quite liked the albums they did when Paul DiAnno was in the band, though back then they had an almost punk edge to them. Which is probably why I like them.

Opinion's divided on the Paul DiAnno era. I'm not really a fan, because Bruce dikeinson is technically a far better singer, but I can understand the appeal in the DiAnno era for some. That said, Maiden's produced decent albums at best, in my opinion, and quite a few stinkers too.

Him Indoors: "I really don't need to hear Bruce whine 'No More Pies' for eight whole minutes!"

Yeah. Iron Maiden Axiom of Songwriting: The chorus always has to be the title sung over and over and over and over.

I'd love to see Operation Mindcrime turned into a video game (done properly, of course). It could be like a heavy metal Nomad Soul...

Mmm, I think things like Mindcrime should stay in the format they were first written in, personally.

Not necessarily current favourites, but of all time:

Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
The Future Sound of London - Teachings from the Electronic Brain
Carcass - Necroticism – Descanting the Insalubrious
Peste Noire - La Sanie des siècles – Panégyrique de la dégénérescence
The Sisters of Mercy - Some Girls Wander by Mistake
The Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Mogwai - Young Team
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Mortifera - Vastiia Tenebrd Mortifera
The Chameleons - Script of The Bridge
Muse - Origin of Symmetry
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
SubArachnoid Space - Also Rising

I can't really pick just one favourite.

Seamus?? That song is the reason the skip function was invented. 'Animals' is probably my favourite PF album, and the last great one they made.

If it were handled badly it would be a travesty, but it is a very cool story. Still haven't heard Mindcrime II yet.

I'm actually quite Disturbed by how many people are picking anything by Dave Draiman. I mean, they're catchy and they'll fill a silence, but compared to Pink Floyd or David Bowie or Iron Maiden or pretty much any of the other suggestions?

Seamus is a classic! Haha. I thought San Tropez was OK, but Meddle overall is a pretty middling album with just Echoes (which of course is exquisite) and One Of These Days to redeem it. Dark Side is so well-loved because it's strong throughout.

I'm surprised there's no love for The Wall here.

the downward spiral-nin

It is a fine album, but I've cooled off towards it over the years. I'd actually say The Fragile is my favourite NIN album, but it's very flawed: you basically have to cut off the beginning and the end and some of the weaker tracks in the middle to create a "perfect" 11-track album:

5. "We're in This Together" 7:16
6. "The Fragile" 4:35
7. "Just Like You Imagined" 3:49
8. "Even Deeper" (Reznor, Lohner) 5:48
11. "La Mer" 4:37
12. "The Great Below" 5:17
2. "Into the Void" 4:49
3. "Where Is Everybody?" 5:40
5. "Please" 3:30
6. "Star[censored]ers, Inc." (Reznor, Clouser) 5:00
7. "Complication" 2:30

But Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and Iron Maiden are all horribly overrated.

This is a tough question though. Top contenders:

Catch 22's Permanent Revolution
BT's This Binary Universe
Cory Johnson's Legend of Zelda (Demos)
Anything by Explosions in the Sky

overrated

I hate this word. It's just a way of saying "Stop liking what I don't like!"

Way too stadium rock for my tastes. That sort of 80s sounding vibe throughout is also a bit off putting.

If I wanted to say I didn't like them I'd say I didn't like them. They just aren't perfection incarnate.

David Bowie I've never really listened to bar on song that I forget the name of but he wasn't that great.
Pink Floyd I have decided never to listen to because of how over played they were by my ex's dad and Brick In The Wall is the only song I like but even that gets dull quickly.
Iron Maiden I like, went out and bought about 10 of their albums in a month.

Firstly, I agree with this:

I hate this word. It's just a way of saying "Stop liking what I don't like!"

Secondly, while I agree on Pink Floyd (what they did is actually not particularly groundbreaking and musically it's quite obvious - doesn't mean it's not great though) and Iron Maiden (good band, never understood the hype), David Bowie's music, when you consider 1) when it came out, and 2) what other music sounded like at the time, it's something else. Especially given that's he's been years ahead of his time pretty much since he started. He's released plenty of crap, mind, but that doesn't stop his classics being... well, classic.
