Finally, a real fallout game

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 1:17 am

But WHY do you like it so much? I would love some insight about it. When I try to play those games, the freezing up, unable to defend myself while a little cave rat attacks me just isn't fun.

Because it's more about stats, dice-rolls and strategy.
Playing FPS is simple, move cursor towards what you want dead and click a button.
Anyone can play an FPS game.
Turn-based games require a bit of finesse and for the player to actually plan out his/her attacks on his/her foes.
Also, it's a much slower pace, some of us just like that.
I like fast-paced games as well, I love L4D.
But sometimes I want a game where it's not about twitch-reflexes. :)

I purchased a copy of that from Good Old Games, so thanks for recommending it because you are making me glad that I did, :) I haven't played it yet, but now I look forward to it even more. :)

*Add http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_temple_of_elemental_evil to that list (also made by Troika).
[IMO quite possibly the best TB D&D game of the last decade]

I'll have to PM that...

Here is an interesting (though slightly unrelated) three clips on Youtube for the interim.

These clips mention Fallout, Arcanum, and Temple ~and Bloodlines (a FPP/ vampire RPG; I'm wrong... Bloodlines isn't mentioned :().

If you (allllllll of you) actually played Hellgate you would know it is the proper would be Diablo 3, if it wasn't published by EA.

Hellgate inspired more ACT/FPS-RPG then any other installment before it; its dual wield+skill system still unmatched; not to mention its gun mod system only matched by S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

No matter how successful SC2 and Diablo3 is and would be, they didn't inspired the industry like all previous Blizzard installment; in the good way anyways.

I hope you all be happy if TES V come out in 5 episodes.

Let's say it does (and I wouldn't know, because I haven't heard from it post-release), and more over SC2 and D3 haven't even had a chance to influence anything - but so what? That's not the point. I'm not defending these games or pitching them against eachother. All I am saying - as I did in previous post - is that a game need not abandon its roots to evolve and be succesful.

And I don't really care about in what form TES V comes out.

I can respect that, even though its certainly not for me. I am a GREAT fan of PC RPGs, but for me its more about the story than strategy. But I can respect your viewpoint. :)

I love Fallout NV myself, but I also loved Fallout 3. Its interesting to me that for so many people, its "either/or" and to compliment one, they feel utterly compelled to insult the other. I must be pretty simple myself, because I am not seeing a significant enough difference between games to like one better OR hate one more. I just love them both. The only real differences that I see are mainly regional as far as I can tell, based on my research of the franchise's lore.

I love them both too, but I prefer NV for the replayability. The ending and the trip TO the ending, can be very different, one to the next, and I really enjoy that about NV. I loved all the extra exploration I found in FO3, I even walked from the top of the Potomac to the TJ Memorial, but prefer the extra story/RPG elements I find in NV. As many others have said, I would love a marriage of the two, Bethesda for the details, world building, etc., Obsidian for the story, dialogue, feature list, etc. (this is a gross simplification)

I also was curious to see what Tim Cain's opinion is of Fallout 3, and I was interested (and I must admit, pleased) to see that he doesn't share the negative view that many fans of the first Fallout games have.
 I missed the avatar for reading the post.

I thought Bloodlines was in there somewhere, but when I didn't see it in the end (the chronological game order threw me), I assumed that I had been mistaken.

Tim said he liked it, but made a point of the differences. I like FO3 as well, but that doesn't change the origin, and purpose of the series gameplay.

In all honesty, I feel its just a different envisioning of it.

Bethesda crafted it how they imagined it, obsidian did the same. Much like artists portraying the same concept will end up with varying results.

I quite enjoyed all fallout games, minus BoS, each has their own strengths.

I went into Fallout 3 with high hopes, despite not liking Bethesda's previous games (some of you may remember me as the guy who started the "Meet the Devs" threads on the FO3 board). Ultimately, I was very dissapointed in every aspect of the game, especially the writing, and couldn't even bring myself to play more than a few hours. I was cautiously optomistic about NV, since I like Obsidian's work, and am a huge BIS fan but I knew the game would still be on the engine that I did not like.

24 hours in, all I can say is WOW! This game nails the feel of Fallout, and for the first time since 2, I feel like I am actually playing a Fallout game, even without the turn based combat and iso perspective, which I always thought of as defining factors of the series. The writing is outstanding, the world is dark, the factions fit in with canon, and most importantly, the game is FUN. I can't get the game out of my head, and am playing it every chance I get, in a way that I haven't done since the classic rpgs like Fallout 1/2, Arcanum, and BG1/2. I still wish that there were more traits, that skills went to 200, and that some of the perks from 3 (like the gender traits) weren't there, but these are very minor complaints about an outstanding game that is also an outstanding fallout game (I never thought I would play a game with the feel of Fallout after Arcanum).

Are any other fans of older rpgs (especially fallout) as blown away as I am by this game?

got game a few week ago great game

It won't vary too much with portraits ~as they should all still look recognizably as the subject.
*Discounting Picasso. http://teachers.westport.k12.ct.us/artsmarts/Projects/Picass2.jpg

This looks like a helluva good game... http://ps3.ign.com/articles/113/1138684p1.html

Fallout 3 isn't the first game sequel to be joltingly different in mechanics than its predecessor, although its possibly among the more successful. Zelda comes to mind, I believe one of the earlier sequels was a side-scroller as opposed to a top-down game. Then of course we have the games from the Nintendo 64 onward. I myself prefer the mechanics started with Orcarina of Time to those of the older Zelda titles.

On a slightly unrelated note, I would LOVE for them to continue or even remake the storyline from the Wizards and Warrior games with an updated engine. Have you ever played those games?

But it looked like him right?

Caricature is a better choice I think. If the artist is good at them, they usually ring true no matter what they look like.

FO3 is a good caricature of Fallout IMO.

I never played it (them), but it looks fine already.

I mean the ones from the 80s. I didn't know about the one from 2000. And the answer is "I don't know", but I would love to see what they could do with the story with an updated engine, yes. Maybe not a Gamebryo engine, but even using an Infinity engine or the Aurora engine. I would love to see the story expanded on with lots of dialogue, lore and backstory. I wouldn't cry foul if they did use something more advanced, like the Source engine or Gamebryo. Especially if they gave us tools that we could mod the game to hell and back with.

The one from 2000 looks pretty interesting. I will have to take a bigger look at that title, I think.

Edit: Its unrelated to the ones from the 80s, though it does look like an interesting story in its own right. I would still love to see the original one brought to new life though. I had a blast with it as a very young boy on my old school NES. I didn't get to play part II much, but I remember beating part 1 on separate occasions in single sittings (as there was just no saving the games back then, though the game may have had one of those password systems, I forget one way or the other).

I absoutely hate FPS. Fortunately my FONV is a 3rd person sandbox game, not a FPS. :D

Turn Base game have this unique texture of......relaxation. It remains me people play games to pass time, serve as snacks for our brain while allowing us to shoot into people's eye with simple click.

On the other hand, I don't hate the current Fallout being ACT/FPS-RPG; after all, I am a big fan of it.

I have no qualms about the engine; Gamebryo is fine by me. Story wise though... Oblivion was hamstrung by the engine (and its post Morrowind design intentions). Player Dialog IIRC was limited to 32 character responses, and the NPC responses were also limited (to some number ~I'd guess 256 ).

The less engine restrictions the better where story is concerned. In fact the simpler and more abstract the engine, the more freedom you have with the story. Stories can be about anything, but Oblivion can only render so many NPC's at a time ~No Breavheart style battles in your story when using that engine , yet Look at the Infinity engine; Is Planescape's story hindered by it? What if the game used the engine for Wasteland(?) or Pool of Radiance? ~Or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCUMM, or Infocom's text engine?

I'm not suggesting they be used, I'm just pointing out that story is only hindered by complex restrictions from the engine; Graphics are hindered by the simplicity of the engine; but its not an even field, as primitive 3d doesn't always look as good as decent 2D.

I find FO3 more interesting IMO, it just felt like I actually had places to go on the map. In NV its just a real wasteland, and kinda boring sometimes, its like GTA people just use you to do there things for them and you go further into the ity and thats it.
