Forced, Overly-Long Intro Parts are Lame

Ummm I wasn't disagreeing.

My point was I find bleak falls annoying in addition to the intro...

Agreed. I was like expecting to have a "Are you sure?" screen pop up just before you exit towards Skyrim. Even the auto-save before the dragon attack is still not enough, I don't want to follow the same path over and over again.

As long as you are on pc you can change your char anytime you want using showracemenu. If you do this right after the tutorial, there are no stats that you could mess up so you can also play with the races.

On consoles, you are screwed :P

Between the loooong tutorial dungeon and the mandatory (if you want dragons) trip to Bleak Falls at the beginning, you pretty much have to play the first 1.5 - 2 hours the same for every character you make.

That annoys the hell outta me. So every character I've made has a level 4 or 5 save where they've completed nothing but the intro stuff and haven't spent any perks. This way I now have 4 races with the intro mission done, standing in Whiterun ready to go.

If I want to start a new build without playing through the tutorial missions, I can do that as long as it's a Breton, Nord, Dunmer or Bosmer. But the problem is, this only works if I'm okay with the looks of the character since there's no cosmetic changes after character creation.

I agree that it is a glaring omission by the developers. They probably thought it was unecessary and failed to realise that it has always been considered a 'must have' feature of pevious Elder Scrolls games.

I'll tell you what though, as soon as the Creation Kit is released, someone will make a proper one that activates before you exit Helgen Keep and venture outside into the wilderness.

Of course, that's for PC only though.

They should probably let you skip the cutscene once you've watched it once; however you still can create a savepoint before the captain guy forgot his name asks you "who are you?"

This thread is about the tutorial dungeon AFTER character creation, not the scene before.

The only conflict with this is that they made you choose at the start who you wanted to follow. Sure, you can join the Legion and follow Ralof, but it feels wrong. This is cool the first times, but ruins some good RP experiences.
My Khajiit Thied and my Breton Wizard for example, they can't care less bout teh politics and the war. The Breton wanted to study at the College, and the Khajiit wanted to just get rich and steal stuff.

I dunno about you, but my character wasn't thinking too much about politics during that first dragon attack. You're following whoever, just to get out of there. You're trying to save your own hide, not form long-lasting allegiances.

IMO, who you follow out of Helgen is of little importance to your character.

In Oblivion you could save before exiting the sewers, and use that save to re-roll.
In Fallout 3 you could save before exiting the vault, and use that save to re-roll.
Both had long tutorials

In Morrowind the opening was very short.

Skyrim has a long opening, so there should be a way to skip it with new characters. There will likely be PC only mods for this, but that doesn't help console players.

I like the intro.

IMO there is nothing wrong with the intro. It's very good. But it shouldn't be forced on you with every new character.

Yeah, sure. But I'd RATHER want to just run away in the confusion. Do what I want. Screw Ralof, Hadvar and Tutorial Loot. I want freedom!
I ended up following Hadvar both times as they got more influence and is probably more powerful.

What I'm saying is, the thing about the choice at the start ruins the RP of those characters that actually CARE about the Civil War.
Like my Nord that want the Imperials out, If I had played on him and went with Hadvar at my first character it would feel wrong.

It was a must have feature in Oblivion but in Morrowind it wasn't needed because there was no tutorial dungeon. You wake up on a boat. "What's your name" a dark elf asks. you leave the boat (more questions by different NPC's), you pick race (and appearance), you pick a class (or make your own), you get a package to deliver and you are done. 5 minutes or so depending on how long you take to select your appearance and class and you are in the gameworld doing whatever you wanted in Morrowind.

I was hoping for something like this in Skyrim. I started with MW and had no trouble figuring out what to do. In that 5 minutes or so you learned to pick locks too, if you wanted to. I don't know if it was a feature in TES before MW as I didn't play them.

And this is just another example why Morrowind is still best in the series, IMO.
I created like 50 characters in Morrowind, about 6 in Oblivion and only 1 in Skyrim, so far. I really don't want to go through all that scripted tutorial again.

I agree. Just a simple "Skip Intro" or "Skip to character creation" button after you've done your first playthrough or something.

I usually set the difficulty to Novice when I make a new character and change back to Master when I brought the Horn back.
Its really much faster.

(MW didn't have it btw)

I will admit I was surprised we didn't get the option at the end of the escape. I'm not sure what, if anything, we could have done at that point that would mess up the rest of the game by changing.

I added a save in my game right at the part where they are calling names, so at least I can start each game without the wagon ride.

I misread your post, I thought you were saying that it's not that bad and Bleak Falls was a necessary intro.

Also, as I am a PS3 player, the mods will not help me. This is just a Bethesda Fail.

I could understand this a bit, but it really makes no difference as you could still join the stormcloaks even if you followed the guard. It could just be in the confusion of the moment you followed the guy who was trying to keep you alive. Heck, the stormcloak guy (Ralof?) had you jumping from a building with your hands tied. "Jump to that barn over there. Try to land on your face to cushion the fall. I'm too busy to cut your bonds right now."

Can't believe how many people are whining about something so insignificant. In the scheme of things is this really so important?

Yes.

Edit: In a game this big the time it probably would have taken to implement this is also insignificant so why isn't it there like in OB. Same goes for being able to name your saves. Insignificant yet very helpful for those of use who have multiple characters. MW had it over what, 10+ years ago?

It is when you wanna make a new character and you have to play the same 1.5 - 2 hours of the game exactly the same. Helgen and Bleak Falls take forever.

Yep. Just because it doesn't bother some people doesn't mean it's not stupid. And, frankly, if it doesn't bother you you obviously haven't played ES games enough. This kinda crap is one of the reasons this game induces so many ragefests, because it's totally unecessary. Like I said, even it doesn't bother you it's still dumb and obnoxious.

Also, why do people think that just because it doesn't bother them it's invalidated as being annoying? Especially since it seems to bother basically everyone I've ever talked to about it, in every game where it happens (not just TES games, either). Repetitive intros after character building are dumb, full stop. There is no excuse for this, it's just developer myopia.

wow, Trolls seem to be competing to think up new things to whine about! congrats, you get the "Original Skyrim complaint of the day" award!!

you know, now that i think about it- i hate how my character doesnt reach out and grab butterflies out of the air. It would be so easy just to animate a hand grabbing animation. Lazy Devs!! my immersion is ruined. discuss!
