Oblivion (and possibly Morrowind?) had a point AFTER the stupid intro-mission that allowed you to rebuild your character. Why is this feature absent from Skyrim?
I seriously have no desire to ever see the scripted scene dragon attack at the beginning of the game ever again. This game REALLY needs a point at the END of that section that allows you to rebuild your character, more just so I have a save-point to start character building from. I mean, look, it's an RPG, right? I don't feel like I'm role-playing if I have to rewatch a section where I know I have no control every time I want to try a new build out.
Frankly, a 'skip intro mission' wouldn't be a bad idea, I have played RPGs before that do this. It's cool the first couple of times but now I'm just groaning at twenty minutes of zero choices and memorized dialogue.
Heh, it wasn't clear from the title.
I thought the opening was pretty good. Great even. I enjoyed it a lot the first time. And the second (picking up on things I missed the first time round). Third even. Though I do with there was an option to "skip it" as it were if I wanted. Of course you get the chance to collect plenty of stuff as you escape, should the game just dump everything on you, nothing, or a random selection?
Still, not as bad as having to do Irenicus dungeon multiple times in BG 2. Now that was a long starter level.
It is when you wanna make a new character and you have to play the same 1.5 - 2 hours of the game exactly the same. Helgen and Bleak Falls take forever.
It never seemed to take that long to me, even after doing it a few times (helps if you remember were things are you want so you don't waste time searching). But 2 hours? I'll have to time it next start I do.
The only conflict with this is that they made you choose at the start who you wanted to follow. Sure, you can join the Legion and follow Ralof, but it feels wrong. This is cool the first times, but ruins some good RP experiences.
My Khajiit Thied and my Breton Wizard for example, they can't care less bout teh politics and the war. The Breton wanted to study at the College, and the Khajiit wanted to just get rich and steal stuff.
I don't see why it should. It was a time of emotion. You wake up in a wagon, less than 10 minutes later your on your knees about to loose your head when a dragon attacks and everything is on fire. In the confusion you follow whoever wants to help you, then when you have a quite moment you can reflect. But when the dragon is flaming everything one might not be thinking philosophically about the civil war. Someone shouts "follow me" and I follow them (on my very first character I didn't even realize at first who I was following as I had my character run around in a panic for a bit, it was pure chance I ended up with who I did - wait, I thought, aren't you the guy with the list?).
Who you choose to follow has no real impact on anything, it is just flavor and tutorial rolled into one.
Yeah, sure. But I'd RATHER want to just run away in the confusion. Do what I want. Screw Ralof, Hadvar and Tutorial Loot. I want freedom!
I ended up following Hadvar both times as they got more influence and is probably more powerful.
But the dragon, you'd never survive!... heh, I guess it is fine to feel that way. I never did to be honest. Few of my characters woke in the prison wagon with a side already picked. One was solidly imperial but who was badly shaken by the whole event (lived in the wilderness for ages after escaping - he the character I mention above when I had no idea what I was doing and I ended up with Hadvar seemingly by chance), another two were in the wrong place at the wrong time and had no stake in it at all (not first at least). The fourth was in the right spot at the wrong time.
What I'm saying is, the thing about the choice at the start ruins the RP of those characters that actually CARE about the Civil War.
Like my Nord that want the Imperials out, If I had played on him and went with Hadvar at my first character it would feel wrong.
Well that is easy enough - if your character actually cares about the civil war then they throw in with the person that matches your leanings. If they bonded with Ralof in the wagon they follow him. If the site of Imperial armor comforts them they follow Hadvar. If they aren't there with any loyalty to either side they they grab the first hand offered to pull them to safety and cling on for dear life.
