Forced to start main quest to start dawnguard?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 2:55 pm

I'm really not bothered with all this dragon [censored] anymore. I wasn't keen on it from the start, to be honest. It was an interesting gimmick, but it's little more than a nuisance now. Nothing shatters the atmosphere of a hike through the mountainside better than that godawful roar repeating every ten seconds.

Being an Xbox user there's little opportunity for me to install anything that might prevent random dragon encounters, so I'm stuck with the damn things.

Assuming this is all inferred correctly of course, but all the evidence seems to point towards this being an eventuality.

Edit; I find it amazing how many people are incapable of understanding that some people don't like their experience of the game being corralled down the narrow (figurative) confines of that cumbersome Main Quest Line. And yes, I did complete it, it was nice for the first run, but let's never speak of it again. It'd be alright if I could just forget about it, but the persistent sky-lizards and lippy guards make sure of the contrary.

Edit edit; Yes, I like complaining, it seems to be this board's favourite pasttime. Don't get me wrong, I like EVERYTHING ELSE about the DLC, and appreciate the work that's gone into it. Bethesda's good when it comes to listening to the fanbase. Don't know why they put up with us.

I'll never understand how or why people are so vehemently against starting the MQ in Skyrim. It's fun. And it's not like it matters at all if you start it or not. The quest is still there.

fighting dragons is an integral part of the game in lore, the character, and the simple fact that if you don't the world will supposedly end.

I just find random dragon spawns have a negative impact on my gameplay experience. They are worse than Oblivion Gates because at least if you ignored them they didn't kill off the population of the world.

It's not a roleplaying thing for me, it's a gameplay thing. I want to play Skyrim without random Dragons constantly popping up, it seems every time I go to Dawnstar or the College theres a dragon there getting ready to wipe some people out as I approach.

Mods don't have anything to do with this. It's about what and how one chooses to play. That could easily be without being "Dovah". I don't think the DLC is centered around the PC being one anyway.

But as long as you are enjoying your shouting Dovakinn...that is what matters. I assure you I am enjoying my characters just as much....mod or no mod.

Couldn't you just like ignore the fact you are dragonborn? unless you go far into the game or use a shout in the open you can really just forget about it and as much as I hate dragons they do add to the game since it is a big part

The first major piece of DLC for Onlivion, Knights of the Nine, required you to complete the entire main quest before gaining access to its content. As a matter of fact, every expansion they have ever done was developed with the assumption that all players going into the new content have already completed the entire MQ of the vanilla game and the MQ of any previous expansions when applicable. So they most likely are assuming that most players at this point have either completed or at least started the main quest to the point that there are dragons in the game world, since dragon slaying was the primary focus of vanilla Skyrim's marketing.

That's not true at all, you never had to complete the MQ in Oblivion to complete Knights of The Nine. I just did it like a couple weeks ago.

Length is not the issue I believe.
It's that some of us have characters that we intended NOT to be the dragonborn and never wanted dragons to spawn in that save file.

Well that's too bad for your characters then because this DLC is for Dragonborn. If it isn't going to apply to your character, don't buy it.

Ha! You are very correct. As a matter of fact, before I moved to PC (three months ago) that was exactly what I done. I wanted the Dragons for a few playthroughs, but the characters were not seen (by me) as being Dovahkiin. So I just triggered them and continued with my character.

The DLC is ment for experienced player's from lvl 20-40 or was it 10-40? I forgot...
And by saying ``they must have travelled a bit`` might just mean that you must have explored let's say Solitude or as far as it. Some speculation's was that it (Dawnguard) will take place somewhere northwest of Solitude.
:hubbahubba:
they recommend that you wait till you are at least level ten and possibly have a shout or two, and some equipment. they said there would be some level 20 and level 40 content as well. you could probably start it at level one, but you'll die quickly

Skyrim is a game where you are forced into doing things you do not want to do, such as being forced into becoming a werewolf to continue the companions quest. Now we are forced into doing some of the MQ to play the DLC. Freedom is something Skyrim does not have.
1) you are complaining about becoming a werewolf in the WEREWOLF questline? wtf?
2) no freedom, eh? so, you can't go anywhere you want, you can't ignore a quest, you can't do whatever you want to people? you cannot spend days running around in circles for no reason?

also, guys, there is no proof that the MQ has to be started. wait till it's released to find out.

Where are you coming up with these assumptions? They never said you had to be the dragonborn for [censored]... the only thing related to the dragonborn in the dlc is a dragon... and a new shout... Begone with your negative one way statements..

Judging by comments from the GI leak, "players must travel the world for a bit, learn about shouting," before they can start dawnguard and information from e3, namely that we fight a dragon who will teach us a new shout, makes it seem like players must be forced to start the main quest before doing dawnguard. This is something I really would not like to be forced into doing.

I wouldn't make that assumption yet. I think that they were just saying you should do some stuff before starting since you have to be minimum level 10 to play the Dawnguard main quest. I think they just used "learn about shouting" as an example of something a low level character would do since the main quest is the easiest place to pick examples. I doubt they would directly tie the new quest to the existing quest as a trigger, unless there was a legitimate story reason for it. But I could be wrong - we'll have to wait and see.

Personally, I always play the main quest, but I understand that this is a concern for those who don't.

Wonderful logic there.

So because it doesn't apply to some characters, I shouldn't buy it for the characters that have done the dragonborn quest?

I'm kind of curious why people play a game with a story just to not follow that story...seems kind of weird.

The story that I follow, is my characters story. The game provides many avenues to take while my character is telling me that story. Some characters can justify taking a certain path that does not fit into another character's story what so ever. The MQ just happens to be an avenue that suits very few of them.

I think this just about sums everything up about following story in TES in general. Skyrim is more than just a story, it is a detailed open world game where you can decide which routes your character will go and which questlines you want to pursue. Pursuing the MQ is one route you can choose to have your character follow, and while it is the main story arc in any given title, you often aren't required to complete it.

Anyway, it could be possible that the MQ of Dawnguard won't require you to pursue the vanilla one. It might be that only the new dragon-related stuff will require you to proceed through the vanilla MQ in order to access those parts of Dawnguard, or quite possibly they will be there regardless of how far along you are in the MQ. Personally, I think it would be a little silly if they made it so the whole Dawnguard MQ would be inaccessible unless you've already completed the MQ.

Did you hear Todd Howard? He said that Dawnguard isn't meant for new players. Yea, you will have to start a new game if you've never played, but with none of their expansions have they made you redo a whole storyline to play it.

That's the problem. TES is becoming more and more of an action adventure series and less of an RPG with choices.

Many people played Oblivion without triggering Gates because they were just bothersome and a lot of people feel the same way about random dragon encounters.

Say what, now? I never completed the MQ on most of the characters I played through KotN with.

This is horrible. My characters are not suppose to be a lame dragonborn. A have two Moon-Borns and two vampires. I don't want to infect them with Dovahkiin stuff just so I can enjoy myself in a vampiric questline.

I have never, and will never, do even so much as the first mission for Delphine. I hate her just based on interactions in the inn. So I will never do the MQ. I do have several characters level 60-81 however.

So depending on what is required, I may not be able to play it.

I will prob get it anyway though, just for crossbows. Well, assuming they appear in normal shops.

Be thankful you don't have to find the Blackreach Elder Scroll...

I did this anyway when I saw the Scroll in the trailer.

Should I list the hundreds of linar RPG games with no character creation? RPG game does not and has never meant open world.
