This isn't an issue of the length of time it would take before starting dawnguard but that I do not want to do the mainquest, ever, on many of my characters.

Same here. I've done the MQ on a previous playthrough (first Character). Did'nt enjoy it at all. I completely ignore it now.

Edit: A little off topic but I really miss the way the MQ went in Morrowind, You show up at Casius' house and he basically tells you to go out and see the world before you start on your "mission". Why must SKyrim start the way Oblivion started? Immediate quest. Why cant I say no to when asked to go see the Jarl of Whiterun?

I think I heard that you don't use the same elder scroll from the MQ. Don't take my word on it though.

Aw seriously? Not once since I've gotten Skyrim have I completed the main quest. I was hoping to avoid it as long as possible. :(

Might as well get it over with.

Judging by comments from the GI leak, "players must travel the world for a bit, learn about shouting," before they can start dawnguard and information from e3, namely that we fight a dragon who will teach us a new shout, makes it seem like players must be forced to start the main quest before doing dawnguard. This is something I really would not like to be forced into doing.
Then the DLC is not for you. Simple as that.

They are telling a story, and if you refuse to follow it, then that is your problem, not Bethesda's

Why cant I say no to when asked to go see the Jarl of Whiterun?
You can. Its called ignoring the quest. When someone wants to see you, you have the freedom of ignoring them.

Yes. They said you travel into the soul place to obtain a scroll.

From what I heard, the whole YE MUST BE LEVEL 10 isn't technically true, you can start Dawnguard when you like, assuming you stumble across it, but the rumours don't show up til level 10 and the content is created with >10 players in mind, so there are no enemies and such suited to low level players.

I'm kind of curious why people play a game with a story just to not follow that story...seems kind of weird.

Dragons. That's why. Pesky bugs...

This is horrible. My characters are not suppose to be a lame dragonborn. A have two Moon-Borns and two vampires. I don't want to infect them with Dovahkiin stuff just so I can enjoy myself in a vampiric questline.
It's funny how you call it "lame" when it's a gift from a god and is SUPER rare to even be born with the SOUL of a DRAGON. If you were born with it would you seriously think it's "lame"?

I think if anyone was born with the soul of a dragon they probably would never find out since dragons do not exist...

fighting dragons is an integral part of the game in lore, the character, and the simple fact that if you don't the world will supposedly end.
Most (all but one) of my characters haven't started the main quest, and so far their worlds seem in no danger of ending. My main quest character's world, however, is under constant attack by large reptilian beasts. It's stressful, and most of my characters would be inclined to leave Skyrim if they encountered more than one of those beasts.

I was worried about this. My vampire is in the 20s and steadfastly not the Dragonborn. Nothing to do with dragons being a PITA (they're not) It's just what I'm rp'ing atm. I'll save my non-Dragonborn vampire playthru until a few of my other characters have had a go, and then see if there's a work around.

Yeah, this shouldn't be a problem. Really you should have already done at least most of the Main storyline by now on at least one character. If not, I have no idea what you've been doing for the past 7 months.

Many people played Oblivion without triggering Gates because they were just bothersome and a lot of people feel the same way about random dragon encounters.

Meh. I see a difference between "I don't trigger the Gates because they're annoying and clutter up the countryside", and the people who seem to get mortally offended that the game dare cast them as a Destined Hero.

As for the people who're running things like Alternate Life/etc..... well, you had to wait a bit for that mod to be added to the game. Give it a bit of time, and I'm sure someone will create "Alternate Life For Dawnguard" which lets you putter around as Joe Random Dirtfarmer With No Destiny and still get to be or hunt vampires.

That kind of svcks. I wish we don't have to I like my guy not knowing what a dragon shout is yet. Adds more addition for me on role-playing! I hope it isn't the case.

Hm. Might skip this dlc for a while if it's going to force me to do the MQ. I like to put that off as long as possible.

That said, at this point, nothing is confirmed. So fingers crossed.

I'll never understand how or why people are so vehemently against starting the MQ in Skyrim. It's fun. And it's not like it matters at all if you start it or not. The quest is still there.

Its a little thing called roleplaying.

1) you are complaining about becoming a werewolf in the WEREWOLF questline? wtf?
2) no freedom, eh? so, you can't go anywhere you want, you can't ignore a quest, you can't do whatever you want to people? you cannot spend days running around in circles for no reason?

also, guys, there is no proof that the MQ has to be started. wait till it's released to find out.

The fighters guild, going back to Daggerfall was never ever about becoming a werewolf. Being forced to become one as part of the companions was a big mistake. It cheapened the process just to appease the ADHD 12 year olds who just wanted to run around ripping NPC's up.

Seriously. It's easy to get. :) Roleplaying. That and not having to deal with broken quests due to dead npcs are my main reasons for leaving it to one side.
