Forum Update Feedback & Discussion

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 2:19 am

Alright well now it's semi caught up... someone last week observed that my avatar was of the Blues Brothers, and that's an avatar I had for maybe a day a long long time ago...

As for your avatar, I see a horse. A brown horse. With half a human body beneath it.

P.S. I just changed my avatar to the axis bold as love cover... does it still show the dude in power armor?

Oh, excellent. That's what it's meant to be. The amazing Horse Woman! :P

And, I'm still seeing Mr. Power Armor O_o

Edit: rmctagg, I'm still seeing what appears to be some sort of fluffy cloud thing.

I feel weird asking this, but is there seriously no way to go directly to the Community Discussion forum from the main forum page?: http://www.gamesas.com/

Seems like I have to enter a subforum first in order to find the community discussion.

I suppose that's not really a problem, other than my habit of backing out to the main forum page when switch game subforums.

So... http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/3672/wtforums.png

(edit: I've blocked the background image myself. It remains [censored] up but with the background image even when I disable Adblock though.)

You wouldn't be using my Chrome extension by any chance?

I finally uploaded the latest version of it last night but for some reason the javascript stopped working and the forum looks messed up. I immediately uploaded a fixed version though so people who are using it shouldn't be affected.

Here are a couple of bugs I've noticed from the latest update:

  • http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5459839/Photos/lockedbug.png

Other things worth mentioning:
  • Rank stars have been replaced by grey blocks
  • Huge white Bethesda logo looks out of place
  • new Skyrim background is distracting (after the skyrim guy was added to the picture), it makes it difficult to read the forum
  • The forums are still as slow as ever (The Bethesda theme), this hasn't changed since the last update a few months back and it still gets on my nerves

Also, why, WHY is there flash on the forums? :cold:

I know it's been there a while I just think it's unnecessary. Why make the forum even slower by using flash?

EDIT2: It would also appear that the forum update broke my chrome extension. or at least the parts of it that use jquery. I have no idea why it stopped working, but it works fine on all other websites so I have to assume that it has something to do with the form update.

The Grey blocks are actually buttons to add as a friend and PM. There placement however has replaced the location of the stars. I miss my stars :cryvaultboy:

Edit* There is also no indication if I've read a thread or not.

[list]
[*]Rank stars have been replaced by grey blocks

The blocks are the 'add friend' and 'pm member' buttons though, they're not a replacement for the stars.

I believe there used to be some sort of icon next to 'reply' and 'quote' too that are missing now too. I'm sure they'll figure it out eventually. :P

Edit: Hey, this is a different thread than before. :P

No and I'm using Firefox. Almost all icons (images) on the forums don't load now, except for a couple of them like avatars, pinned topic icons and smilies. There are no status stars, "add as a friend" and "PM this member" buttons are just tiny grey buttons, reply and multiple quote buttons have no images, etc.

This seems to be the closest topic to forum tweaking and customization, so here it goes.

To the people who are using my green forum theme, either in Stylish or as a Chrome extension - the skin uses image files stored on my server, which I will be deleting in the near future as part of a server spring cleaning. I know that some of guys you are still using them, as I get about a thousand requests for each image per month.

If you want to continue using the theme, please update your CSS/extension to the latest version which uses data URLs (embedding the images in the stylesheet). The Chrome extension can be downloaded from https://github.com/downloads/max99x/bgsf-green-theme/bgsf-green-theme-1.2.crx and the CSS file by itself for Stylish is available https://github.com/max99x/bgsf-green-theme/blob/master/forum.css. Let me know if you have any problems.

Another bug I noticed is for personal notifications.

You will receive a notification if someone has quoted your post, but you will not receive a notification if someone multiquotes your post (among other posts).

I also believe the show topic filters option need to be more visible.

Thank you for the update Max, the forums look great once again :D.

I have also noticed this.

Also, lately the forums have been very laggy for me (long loading times) and just a minute or two ago I got logged out, then when I tried to log back in it showed me an "SQL server error" page. Then I tried to log in again and it worked (obviously).

Some work is being done on one for the forums so I guess the present lagginess is down to that.

That's good to know.

On an unrelated note, when Skyrim comes out can we expect the overflow time limit between consecutive posts to go up temporarily?

I don't see any reason for that, although it depends on how the forums behave.. The flood control increase is usually because of spam attacks and similar rather than sheer posting volume, although we will have to wait and see what happens. :)

Oh, well that's also good to know. I know that previously (a couple years ago) the forums couldn't cope with large amounts of posts in a relatively short period of time, but I guess the new server software (since the latest update) has remedied that.

I believe this is the case. It is true that the flood control was bumped up for a few days on either side of Oblivion's release but I believe the current software handles this better. It might still happen but I doubt it will be nearly as high as last time.
