Forum Update Feedback & Discussion

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 12:14 am

OK, i'm not too savvy with social networking, and it looks like this is what theforum is trying to become.

Before I start to ignore my notices...

What's gained by using notices?

Is there a way to turn it off, and/or are notices counted against my message space?

What's gained is; you can see when someone has written on your wall, replied to a wall post of yours, PMed you, replied to a PM of yours, or added you as a friend.

Yes, there is a way to turn them off, it's somewhere in the profile. I think they do count against your message space, but Im not sure. If they are though; you could easily just delete them, or block them to begin with..

I approve of the changes, for this obvious reason:

On the topic of smilies, I'm not happy about the change for the thumbsup emoticon. Before the change, it was a detatched hand giving a thumbsup. Now it has a face to it that is winking. This makes it unsuitable to express approval (of, say, a modder's work) -

I think this one still does the trick. :goodjob:

Can we please add the puking emote? The one where the green face vomits and licks it up. I love that using that one in appropriate situations.

Good ol' puking emote, I miss you. (You weren't planning on using that one to praise modders, right? :P)

:yucky: <--- Nothing coming out. :ermm:

It would be nice if the show all emoticons button would make the list pop up as a square with several emoticons in a row. Saves you space and scrolling. Right now it just makes the single row even longer.

The forums are significantly slower (for me), but they do look great.

It looks like it is no longer possible to quote posts from a locked thread. This was very useful, because you could click 'quote' on the first post of a locked thread, then click reply in another thread to get the fully quoted text with all the links and code intact, and then use that to create a new thread without having to add all the links and fancy colors/fonts/whatever all over again.

It would be nice to have it back.

I hadn't noticed that had gone, my moderator screen still has the quote ability on it but I can now see the members screen doesn't have it.

I will ask.

My performance has just gotten pretty atrocious (on the forums, I mean...). Opening threads or using the full reply editor takes forever to load. Usually it just doesn't. I've got to click/refresh 2 or 3 times before it decides to finally open. Strange, since I wasn't getting any issues immediately after the update, but all other sites open fine. The page also claims to be perpetually loading.

And there's still no CD links in the index :stare:

I have a minor suggestion for the forums:
Move threads about the forum itself to an area separate to CD.
As things currently stand, if a user wants to find the threads about the BSF itself, such as this one, they have to trawl through all the pages of threads in the CD.

Edit: I really do dislike that 'please wait 60 seconds between making replies'.
For it to turn up when I have just made a post in a thread, and then clicked on the 'reply' button in another users post, before I can even start forming a reply. That to me just feels like defective site design.

As for the post I was planning on replying to as part of my edit...
And there's still no CD links in the index :stare:

What is worse is that there is a link to the 'General' area on BSF in the thread title path, but no links to that area, which is where CD is, and where a new area for discussions about BSF itself should be.

A sticky would work, but these threads never make it there. Even if it is of more significance than other threads up there. Like good old "CD is a burden, don't give us an excuse to close it!", that's been up there almost three years.

Oh man, that's horrible. I really do hope they bring it back because if they don't, starting a new Call of Duty Discussion thread will be http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1147051-call-of-duty-discussion/page__view__findpost__p__16764630.

Performance ought to be a priority. No lag, no chopped-blurry sensation when we scroll, etc. Things seems to be good in that regard.

Beyond that, hard to cater for all tastes, really : that's what the "stylish" mod is for. I'm really partial to the good ole tan theme myself, or at any rate anything that's not that annoying myspace-looking newish glossy look. IP board skin > Beth skin, anytime.

I've turned off my Stylish styles, but I still can't find 'Options' (to download a topic). It's still listed as available in the Help file. If so, where is it? Has anybody seen it lately?

PS - The black has always been awful, although I suppose it looks blingy and trendy to some. This is just a new version of awful.

That's funny, because the IP Board also solves the problems with lag as well as the chopped=blurry sensation when scrolling :P

Yeah, I know. That's why I said it was superior ; and I mentionned that while performance should be their main concern, they were doing good in that regard, as far as I was concerned.

Alright, I'm trying to use my notices, but it's frustrating.

First, it appears that I need to be in a board to access my new notifications dropdown. As in CD and not Elderscrolls, correct?

Second, I can't see my top (new) notification due to the "settings" bar at the top. Does anyone else have this issue?

Third, I'm only running about a 50% chance of actually getting the dropdown to work (clicking either on the number or the inverted carat)

Finally, just now (the others have beeb pretty consistant for the past few days), a "quoted" link is taking me to a wrong post (not mine, I'm not even in the thread)

Do others have issues like this, or am I just special? ;)

All the old CoD threads prior to #33 have been pruned anyway, why aren't they removed from the OP?

I might not have noticed for a few hours if someone hadn't sent me a message about it on Steam as soon as I booted up my PC :P

Ever since the update of these forums it works so slow on my PC, but it works fine on my laptop and on other PC's I've used.

Anyone else experienced this or know why it might be happening?

I'm using IE8

First, change your browser. That's like asking "Why is my car going so slowly? I drive it through molasses, by the way."

And that might help you since I seem to have been one of the few experiencing a huge slowdown since the update last March. Now I use Chrome for the Forums and Firefox for everything else. Despite it working fine on other PCs.

EDIT: Now that this has been moved here, I'll say I love the mobile version so much. I used to have to browse the Forums with such huge delays that I didn't bother on my phone (and forget about posting). Now I get caught up browsing before bed.

Oh, and I guess it's the format of his name (with the hyphen), but we used to be able to search for times we've been quoted with no problem and t made it easier to reply to those, but now searching for g-ranger2100 with and without quotes yields nothing like that. I'm still fine, though.

I am not too sure about the notifications counter at the top of the pages. It doesn't seem to do anything for me unless I click it a bunch of times.

edit- acutally might have been a bug from when they first switched. Seems ok now.
