It's funny how no game plot has truly changed.

What I thought was pretty cool is in FO1 you could accept the Masters plan and get an ending that shows you being dipped and seeing the full Fallout ending slides to go along with it. Not a generic "you died/lost" screen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfyqlMBeQFU <- here it is for those interested.

Something that was lacking in FO2. Fallout 3's ending slides where a joke compared to those.

You know what WOULD have been an interesting evil ending is if your PC told Eden he isnt from a vault, Eden being proud of your service, innoculates you against the MFEV, and with you as the new Colonel in the Enclave USAF, the Enclave brutally brings law. But only the 'pure' will live to see the DC region prosper.

It is a simple, yet effective method for introducing the player to the game world and presenting the parameters for completing the game. FO could use cut-scenes like most RPG's, but this works too.

Funny thing is all my characters are the same in all FO's, start off with sneak, guns ( small ), and speech, followed by a mix of every other type so it's not just the story.

It may be due to the writting from dev's from previous games, but a lot of black isle characters are popping up in my head when I play, Lily and Leo > Minsc and Boo, Morte's "Hey chief" > raul's "hey boss".
Ignus > the Burning man, Jack of Spade > Khalid.
I could post more given time but I hope you get my point that as others have said it's common given the setting of the FO universe, typical roleplay forula, dev's and fan expectation to stay close to cannon that things are similar.

Though Col Martyr you're extremely right that the FO's are all close in outside looks story element wise.

Tacticts and the abomination of game industry (AKA Fallout: BOS) was the only exception

I think this also helps making the player connect to the character. I mean start as an average Joe with a more or less average task makes the character seem more real, easier to connect, easier to see yourself in him or her.
Start with a badass char directly on a save the world path, I just don't see the same level of connection forming.

Tactics was a lot of fun even if it dovetailed from canon a bit, I liked the RTS kind of playstyle with a Fallout setting.

The 30 minutes I played of Brotherhood of Steel was like grinding my face off with a cheese grater.

I believe that Planned Parenthood encourages teens to play Fallout: BoS as the new poster-child for using contraceptives.

EDIT: "Use protection and you will not end up producing a bastard like this!"

Autumn wouldn't support wiping out all non-Enclave humans. The Enclave wouldn't have anyone left to rule, so it would be like a bunch of people dressing up like cops and looking around for pretend criminals.

In Fallout 3 you should have been able to help Autumn shut Eden down and take control of the region for the Enclave. That would be a real choice, rather than the ridiculous white knight vs. genocide choice we got instead.

Wow, I guess you didn't learn in elementary school that all stories are the same, but told differently to make it new. All adventure stories are the same, hero stories, protagonist/anagonist and so on.

Fallout.....

Fallout never changes....

I think it is the simplest way to allow the hero(ine) to have any given background.

It's called The Path of the Hero sometimes when discussing narratives.

Read Hero of a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell.

Basically that forumla is the center of all conventional fantasy and sci/fi plot ever written.

Person A wants Thing B and has to go to Place C to get it, along the way opposed by the forces of Group D Person E or Thing F.

there are broadly four kinds of conflict. man against man. Man against society. Man against nature and Man against Himself. Man again Himself would make an amazingly boring game (unless you personified part of the self and made it man v man conflict). Man against nature might work, it's part of the Fallout-verse, but again fairly low-action to have a faceless antagonist.

Man against society works but only again if society is personified in an organization or man.

For video games the conflict always boils down to man against man (or many many men with miniguns).

For that structure the classic path of the hero is archetypal.

I think he's fibbing Horrigan had like 999 hitpoints it's impossible to get for that much even with the Gauss rifle, and sniper. (Unless he got really lucky and got an "instant kill" critical.
