It's funny how no game plot has truly changed.

(Unless he got really lucky and got an "instant kill" critical.

Bingo! We have a winner.

The next Fallout should be about a boy trying to find his pet radroach!

Or make it a Pokemon: Plutonium Edition!

@ the Colonel: You are describing every RPG. I think New Vegas is nice in that you aren't really saving the masses, this go round. Someone is getting screwed hard no matter how you play the game.

Man against nature and Man against Himself. Man again Himself would make an amazingly boring game (unless you personified part of the self and made it man v man conflict). Man against nature might work, it's part of the Fallout-verse, but again fairly low-action to have a faceless antagonist.

You know what WOULD have been an interesting evil ending is if your PC told Eden he isnt from a vault, Eden being proud of your service, innoculates you against the MFEV, and with you as the new Colonel in the Enclave USAF, the Enclave brutally brings law. But only the 'pure' will live to see the DC region prosper.

The problem is that there's no inoculation against the modified FEV. It's specifically designed to kill everyone who isn't a pure strain human. Everyone in the wasteland, even the Brotherhood and former Vault dwellers, have been exposed to either mild radiation or the airborne FEV, and they are all vulnerable. Only the Enclave and people who are still in the Vaults or very recently left the Vaults are immune.

In Fallout 1, not finding the water chip in time meant your vault died and you lost the game. Seriously. You lost. Game over. No one these days, not even Obsidian, has the balls to do that.

In New Vegas, it's suggested that you track down Benny to find the Platinum Chip but... you never really have to, do you? I think you can skip the whole Platinum Chip thing entirely. Or get it and just let it collect dust in your pocket from that point on.

Oh I know, I just simply find it funny that if you make just the slightest tweak and sell it as new, people will buy it. I think it's that we all KNOW what will happen, it's the hows and whys we want to find out.

Lol the pokemon series has been doing that for years. There's literally like 10 of the same game released over and over and it still sells. People like their stories to be familiar I guess. Meh, whatever works and makes it fun.

There are seven basic plot archetypes: The Quest, Voyage and Return, Tragedy, Comedy, Rebirth, Overcoming the Monster and Rags to Riches. It's just that the quest archetype fits the game format best.

I notice few seem to have the protaganist fade into memory, at the end most games leave you kings - powers of some sort.
The FO's make you a legend, never to be heard of in person but central to future events, FO3 had I think no mention to player actions of the past ( I may be wrong? if so please correct ).
NV I think has come the closest of a more linear series game I've played to make others and their groups more central to their own present then past player character actions though.

I like these outcomes though, as most times I don't see the protaganist of the FO series doing anything other than walking off not even being remembered as a verbal myth story.

The basic premise for all the games are pretty much the same but the way the story unfolds is significantly different in NV.

Plus a lot of stories share pretty much the same plot structure. Look at the Terminator movies for example. This is the basic plot structure of T1, T2, and T3:
Spoiler
Protector and assassin arrive - no explanation needed.
Assassin and protector find the main character at the same time - Terminator and Kyle Reese find Sarah at Tech Noir, Terminator and T-1000 find John Connor at the mall, Terminator and T-X find John Connor at the pet store.
First big fight and chase scene - Tech Noir shoot out in T1 followed by chase, mall shoot out followed by chase in T2, pet store shoot out followed by chase in T3.
Main character escapes - Sarah and Reese get captured by the police while the Terminator flees, the T-1000's truck gets blown up, the T-X's crane gets demolished.
Main character thinks they're safe but runs into the assassin again.
Second big action sequence - Police station shootout in T1, mental hospital battle in T2, cemetery shoot out in T3.
Main character is truly safe and has an opportunity to escape the assassin by going into hiding - the Terminator had no way of finding Sarah after her escape from the police station, same situation with John in T2 and T3.
Main character does something that lets the assassin track them down again - Sarah calls her mother in T1 but the Terminator killed her mother and intercepts the call, the good guys go after Cyberdyne and the T-1000 tracks them down, the good guys go into the government research facility and the T-X tracks them down there.
Third big action sequence - Terminator pursues Sarah from the motel in T1, Cyberdyne shoot out followed by T-1000 chase in T2, research facility battle in T3.
They think the bad guy is dead but he's not - Terminator rising from wreckage in T1, T-1000 reforming after being shattered, don't really remember what happened in T3 but I'm sure this is in there.
They finally defeat the bad guy in a factory - Terminator gets crushed in T-1, T-1000 falls into molten metal in T2, T-X gets nuke shoved in her mouth in T3.
Also, in all three movies, the protector dies.
