http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3ouyyFBgXA of Grunty's lair in Banjo-Kazooie is amazing. All the music from these games is incredible. Also a few of the ocarina songs are catchy, Song of Storms is the worst for me.

Morrowind and Oblivion don't have all that great music. I mean, the main themes are good, but all of the explore, ambient stuff is just alright.

Myst and Halo come to mind. Actually, Robyn Miller (the composer for Myst) was actually one of Martin O'Donnell's (the composer for Halo) inspiritions to work in video games.

Oh and loved the music for Limbo.

I still think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVGYMCYAPowis the greatest thing I've ever heard.

I think one of the forumers, Luke Skyrimer, made that.

I think I'd describe it as "robust": which is a compliment to it, really. What I mean is that I've repeatedly tried to add music that I think is better, but I get fed up with it quickly, whereas Soule's compositions don't seem to wear out anywhere near as quickly. They may not be tracks I'd necessarily settle down to listen to, but they're pleasant and occasionally they capture an incredible atmosphere.

WET comes to mind. Nothing like a bit of grooving along to the soundtrack as you shoot people. :gun:

It definitely takes a certain skill to compose for a game like Oblivion. What I've noticed is that when I put in music from other movies, I'm always avoiding combat and walking into cities because I don't want the music to change. With Jeremy Soule's music, the melodies are subtle enough that you don't really get attached to them, and yet it's still decent stuff. He has the challenge of hitting the perfect spot between boring and distracting while still making it sound good.

Etryan Odyssey III has one of the best selection of musics I've heard in a video game in a long time : http://www.youtube.com/user/Banim#grid/user/52C40159A7DDB8FA Excellent variety of tracks, somewhat old school sounding yet modern at the same time, always perfectly adapted to the situation :D It's older siblings soundtracks are just as good too.

Yuzo Koshiro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyuReqv2Rnc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVYx0OgWdbE, that's why.

to name a few

Halo- regardless if you life the games the scores were works of art

Gears of War all 3- great games great scores.

Neverwinter Nights- My favorite ever (Skyrim might change that though)

Baulders Gate 1&2 - A no brainer

Morrowind & Oblivion- Morrowind better main theme Oblivion better and more varied overall music

Realms of Arkania Star Trail- One of My favorite Games and despite the keyboard sounding score it was very well written, can't imagine would it would sound like remastered with a live orchestra.

Skyrim also so far seems like a top contender for best of the year, Jeremy Soule has outdone himself.

I think that sums up how I feel. A note about the battle music, I loathe almost all battle music with a passion: one game (I forget the culprit offhand; DA:O maybe? Actually it may have been New Vegas. Or both.) was so irritating that it actually made me turn the music off completely, at least for a long duration.

Oblivion was easier to tame: I just stuck a "silent" mp3 in the battle folder, so instead of something nasty and agitating, it just goes silent: I guess a bit like the way that birdsong suddenly stops if there's a cat on the prowl! I experimented with emptying the folder completely so the ambient music just continued which worked to an extent but tended to malfunction slightly.

Anyway, battle music: just say no.

I see I'm not the only one who enjoys the Halo soundtracks, great stuff imo :)
I also found the Medal of Honor Frontline soundtrack pretty impressive.

I agree, I love Nerevar Rising but the rest isn't nearly as memorable but still good. I wasn't that big a fan of Oblivions tracks though.

Oblivion, Fallout 3, etc.

I have fond memories of the opening bits of Secret of Mana.
The http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXwevR52t5k&feature=related in the Marathon games was pretty good.
Most of the recent Final Fantasies have had some great themes.

Yuki Kajiura does some great stuff on the Xenosaga soundtracks:

You can listen to the whole soundtrack for free there. Along with the narrator and the nice graphics style it's one of the best things about the game. I love it.

I was going to mention bastion. Amazing game, loved everything about it.

I especialy liked the music when you
Spoiler
first find Zia, and later on when you carry Zulf while the Ura attack you.

Jet Set Radio Future has a great soundtrack, one of my favs. ever. And of course most Elder Scrolls music I really enjoy, and Final Fantasy Tactics has some great stuff as well.

JSRF soundtrack, all I rememebr is "the meaning ov love" and a song with the only lyrics I remember are "gotta hot hand".

And tons of other games I cannot think of currently. I love me some video game music.

Didnt click the links, but I agree. RDRs OST went so well, fables was just amazing (favorite) and has so many great songs. Dark souls is pretty good. I loved the music when fighting Gwyn. I found it great having a boss batle to that music.

Didnt care for mass effect 2s music. Aside from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FriQA-DIejw. That was awesome. And "David" in operation overlord.

Being a big TES fan, I love the Oblivion and Morrowind soundtracks, but the first place I heard Jeremy Soule's work was the Total Annihilation soundtrack, and it is still one of my favourites. Also a really big fan of the Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre series, which uses many of the same themes and melodies throughout the various games; the 4 disc set that was released alongside the PSP remake of Tactics Ogre is a good one to check out. I like the duo of Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori; there are a number of standout tracks in the Halo series and their work on earlier Bungie games like Myth 2 really shows where the epic feel of the music came from. Really enjoy the music of Mass Effect as well (probably prefer the first to the second, though there is a lot more available on places like Amazon for the second one), different for an RPG; hoping to hear some more great electronic stuff in Mass Effect 3. Jesper Kyd is another great VG composer; really like his work for the Hitman series (disappointed they got rid of him for the upcoming game) and his Assassin's Creed work is good as well). I also really like the Final Fantasy series music wise, even for stuff that Nobuo Uematsu didn't do.

Here's one of my favourite VG tracks: Temple of Light from Fable; there's also a version in Fable 2 called Marcus Memorial which uses more "real world" sounding instruments but I think I prefer the original, very ethereal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bvpf47peuk&feature=related
And a bit of my childhood from Streets of Rage 2 (this song sounds crazy on CD): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVYx0OgWdbE

Forgot to mention: I've been getting into JRPGs lately, and while I like most of the soundtracks, I'm not a fan of the guitar shredding type tracks that almost all of them have, or the tons of weird sounding tracks that Resonance of Fate has.

I love Jeremy's work on IceWind Dale... but I just got Skyrim today and I think its soundtrack kicks IceWind Dale's soundtrack's rear end. Jeremy Soule's outdone himself, in my strong opinion.
