Probably on the top of my list is Zelda: A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy 4 and 6 as well as Morrowind. Dragon Age, Oblivion, and Guild Wars do come in close. I actually counted and I have more official game soundtracks that I had thought.

You can listen to the whole soundtrack for free there. Along with the narrator and the nice graphics style it's one of the best things about the game. I love it.

Jet Set Radio Future has a great soundtrack, one of my favs. ever. And of course most Elder Scrolls music I really enjoy, and Final Fantasy Tactics has some great stuff as well.

Probably one of my favourites is http://www.kirillpokrovsky.com/ score for Ego Draconis (or Divinity II or Dragon Knight Saga; how many names does a game need?!) which I think is one of the most consistently good soundtracks I've heard. I find a lot of it to be quite sad and poignant, though that's probably just me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tYC8PoGkZQ had a pretty good soundtrack too.

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohJ3EfC7lP4&feature=related is solid, as is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVCbF2Kk708, which takes me back to 1998 like nothing else.

I agree with some of the previous posters. Every Elder Scrolls game, World of Warcraft, GTA Radio stations often have great stuff. Hell, even the original themes are pretty fantastic when they do them.

Some stand outs for me I haven't seen posted in no particular order:

And tons of other games I cannot think of currently. I love me some video game music.

Gotta say recently I've been very impressed by the music from some Nintendo DS RPG.

Etryan Odyssey III has one of the best selection of musics I've heard in a video game in a long time : http://www.youtube.com/user/Banim#grid/user/52C40159A7DDB8FA Excellent variety of tracks, somewhat old school sounding yet modern at the same time, always perfectly adapted to the situation :D It's older siblings soundtracks are just as good too.

Radiant Historia is a less well known RPG on the Nintendo DS and is IMHO one of the only good jRPG in those last years. It also sports an awesome soundtrack : http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=E169075E540F2C3B The main battle music by itself would manage to help us pass through the fights without getting bored : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzQq3-9nhKA&list=PLE169075E540F2C3B&index=4&feature=plpp_video :D

And on a very differently sounding register, the Shin Megami Tensei games got such an awesome soundtrack! Here's a playlist for the "Strange Journey" spinoff on the Nintendo DS (again ^^) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLQUxXrucW8&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL6F462945A13FB506

Brb, checking Atlus site for news on the next RPGs and RPG like games they are making XD

I'm including my favorite (or one of several contenders) soundtrack from each respective game's entire soundtrack collection as a link:

Lennie Moore is an excellent composer -- try this medley from "Outcast". http://youtu.be/M26n2gGV7FA

He's one of the composers for the upcoming "Star Wars: The Old Republic", which is fitting since his music reminds me of John Williams' music.

Anything by Jeremy Soule and Inon Zur.

The soundtrack of "Bioshock", with its mix of classic American 20th century music and original tracks.

Vometia (above) is right about the soundtrack of "Divinity 2:Ego Draconis". It is poignant, at that. (One of the touches that made me smile though was that when your character is killed, the music winds down like a vinyl LP).
