[WIP] God Rays

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 9:34 pm

Yes, I'm making a big weather mod. Many new weather types and many new cloud textures made from scratch. Glad you like
Here's one more that I think could benefit from godrays at sunset: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/imageshare/images/3485733-1336935228.jpg

I'll be following the god rays development closely! It has been my favourite modded feature since Morrowind.
I can't think of any reason why Bethesda didn't implement this. I remember even creating a thread a long time ago showing that about 85 % wants god rays http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1154978-god-rays-crepuscular-rays/. Based on those numbers as well, I think this mod will be very popular!

holy, this with the godrays will be absolutely breathtaking....

can i make a request for your mod?

I really hate the skyrim system where the weather changes to snow suddenly when i enter, for example, windhelm. It's just so unrealistic (and predictable). If it's sunny elsewhere, it should stay that way for almost the entire worldspace (since the worldspace is not that large). Same thing goes when you climb mountains; the weather shouldn't change so abruptly and predictably.

similarly, if it snows up in the mountains, then it should rain at lower elevations. For example, if it snows at windhelm, if I walk to riften, it should rain.

Will there be a more drawn back version or any customization? I, personally, find the ones in the video far overdone and rather fantasmal looking. I'd love to have some far more faint and less noticible ones. Also, those appear to be projected based on the clouds, if it were a sunny day, will there be object based god rays as well? (I assume yes?)

I'm sad I missed the video, but then again youtube is one of the worst places on the internet.

Also, is there a white paper on how Alan Wake did its volumetric shadows? I was impressed by those when I played the game, but couldn't find anything on it.

Perhaps it would be better to upload the video somewhere else, instead? Maybe just the video file to a file-sharing website?

Yeah I aim to change some of that. The fog in Riften and the snow in Windhelm. And definitely lengthen the weather transitions so they aren't just 15 seconds like now.

The version with god rays is not released yet, it was a preview. Hopefully soon though!

Looks good boris, but it seems a bit too exaggerated in some cases doesn't it?

It will be as customisable as any other ENB feature is.

That's the essence of testing, you put things in extremes to see what is possible and ensure it's working correctly even in extremes. The main key is that ITS THERE and it works and its incredible!

Finally ENB matters to me with both beautiful God Rays and beautiful Parallax mapping and I still don't want to use it.

I wish it wasn't such a performance drainer, because I'd hop on this immediately. Amazing work. I will use these once I get a machine with the newest specs.

Porscha: We can only assume godrays will be a performance drainer, but we don't know yet. :) You can still play with ENB with no to minimal performance loss if you turn off features. SSAO is the only major hit performance wise really.

I can't afford minimal. I see people record videos with no hitch and at least 60fps, even with ENB. I don't get half of that on Vanilla. One of the reasons why I'm a huge fan of Realistic Lighting. I would like to use that in-junction with ENB on minimal settings, though. Boris has done a great job.

There's something about the d3d9.dll that lowers FPS even with ENB off. I wish I knew what it was. It's not right!!!

I am willing to try the latest version once again and see how it plays out.

Have you tried going through the configuration files? ENBseries actually has a few features that are meant to improve FPS and stability (the core options and the speedhack setting) - although the only way they'll really help you is if you turn everything in ENBseries that affects performance off to begin with (SSAO, depth of field, the modified object processing).

How can i show on compressed YouTube videos this effect without making it very strong?

charon711
I'm trying to make many parameters in the mod to turn on only those features, which user want.

Porscha
Look, i did a lot of optimizations in latest versions and even bought ATI card for half of the users and still have complains about performance, based on previous experience. Should i rename project to stop imprinting or what? The one i know for sure, will never do optimizations for the mod, it's prooved as meanless. d3d9.dll can't be the reason of slowdown, if no effects running and everything toggled off (in latest version impossible to turn off everything, because depth and color textures are still captured, i don't know when to turn off and where user use it or not). One guy few days ago told that on gtx560ti he have 8-15 fps, but i have the same on radeon 6450! And the problem was that he running MSI Afterburn, which also use hooking of d3d.

@ENBSeries, do you have any intention of releasing the source code for the Skyrim binaries? Just curious - I, for one, would be very interested in learning how some of your effects are implemented (engine side, that is).

ENB/Boris (I think your Boris), I tried your latest version 112Kage with everything turned on and I must say that I am absolutely impressed with how much you have optomized ENB. I took off my fps cap and tested it with my highest average FPS. and I am only seeing an average of 5-10 fps drop. as to where in earlier versions my game was unplayable. I salute you sir and if i had the extra cash would donate because you are doing amazing things with this.

Would it be possible to set up the D3D9 dll to not do anything if the Creation Kit loads? Pretty much every render window besides the gamespace window doesn't work at all if ENB is in place when the CK loads.

Maybe I'm going to sound a little harsh, but to all the people complaining about getting low FPS...DO A CHECK! And don't start blaming on random stuff (ENB, d3d9, etc).
If you have a good graphics card and your game is slow, then there's a problem with your PC (Sorry). Other people run pretty good on crappier cards. If you have a crap PC that can't even run Vanilla properly, then sorry, you can't complain about low perf.
Check applications that run during game time. Update drivers, Google. Are you sure you didn't [censored] anything up yourself (and maybe forgot about it?) Does you RAM svck? Does your CPU svck? maybe you have heat issues?

I'm sure Boris works as hard as he can to make stuff optimized, its not easy work! (I know, cause I'm a programmer). he even buys the cards to test on.

Both work just fine. Realistic lighting does all its stuff through ESP files as far as I can tell.

Here is an ENB preset that only does SSAO/DOF/Paralax Support/sixy Shadows - and even has an "Ultra Light" preset that didn't give me a performance hit at all.
