[WIP] God Rays

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 5:18 am

Hello
At this moment simplified version of sun/god rays effect is done, it's well known standart effect, similar was done in OBGE. More complex volumetric version for any direction is in development.

Part of ENBSeries graphic mod. Latest version is very optimized, so don't speak rediculous things about it.

I'm intrigued. :D

-New ENB is really fast and it works well on ATI cards now. I recommend trying it out.

Looks excellent - especially the way it cuts through the fog.

What would the volumetric version entail? Will it let the sun shine in from off-screen?

Also, silly question in regards to volumetric light - would some kind of fake-volumetric effect on shadow-casting lights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31rCAXfOdGk) be practical in Skyrim? Cheap lighting compromises aside, I suppose.

Right, Alan wake volumetric shadows are what i'm developing. The problem only that Skyrim shadows projected not from direction of sun sprite and i don't know what would be better, spend cpu performance to correct shadows or somehow mix by direction of view between valid and incorrect rays (at cost of gpu performance). You know, it's a big satisfaction to walk under the trees with such rays (reversed volumetric shadow).

This looks excellent! The sun rays are perhaps a bit too intense in terms of length though, but still very very nice!

I've been preparing many cloud textures specifically designed (with holes in them for light to peak through) for godrays! Will be awesome to test this out with them later.

It'll probably be customizable anyway and he said its a simplified effect right now.

But personally I think it looks fantastic as is.

Amazing work Boris!

Very promising. Skyrim really looks like a real place instead of that videogame-y look with ENB. Godrays will make it even better (wonder why Bethesda didn't put the effect in the game... many current-gen games have it!).

Yes, I'm making a big weather mod. Many new weather types and many new cloud textures made from scratch. Glad you like
Here's one more that I think could benefit from godrays at sunset: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/imageshare/images/3485733-1336935228.jpg

I'll be following the god rays development closely! It has been my favourite modded feature since Morrowind.
I can't think of any reason why Bethesda didn't implement this. I remember even creating a thread a long time ago showing that about 85 % wants god rays http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1154978-god-rays-crepuscular-rays/. Based on those numbers as well, I think this mod will be very popular!

I wish you create a new youtube account, i really want to see these god rays. Just ignore the ignorant children that spurt nonsence and dont have enough brain power to figure out how to configure ENB for themselves.

Thanks, glad you like it!
I don't want to make this thread about me, so I'll just say shortly in spoilers :P
Spoiler

I've been working on cloud textures for about 3 months or so and done some unique weathers and lighting types. There are many cloud types I want to make before I feel "finished". Cirrus is pretty much finished, but there are more ones to do in cumulus and rainy/overcast clouds. Cumulus are the hardest ones and takes the longest time, but the rest goes pretty fast and easy.

So, I don't really know when it will be finished, but I continue to do them because I find it fun. If I realize it will take too much time for me to ever get finished, I'll release the textures as a resource package or as a very small mod to just replace vanilla weather and not create hundreds of new ones :P
Or I'll send them to someone else who creates a weather mod and let them incorporate them in their mod. In one way or another, you'll be able to see them in your game. Hopefully it won't take too long!

It was in the video you missed. That video was beautiful. I want it back, badly. There was amazing sunrays and procedural clouds. 3 minutes worth.

For Skyrim.

I saw the video. I just didn't realize there were procedural clouds. I had to watch on my phone, so I didn't get a very good look :P

Eh, I prefer the latter personally since my cpu is weak. Don't be so sensitive Boris, all the comments were good when I saw the video and everyone loves your mod- half the top files on the nexus are just settings for it.

Read the OP, there was one but it's gone now because some people can't avoid being stupid when it comes to commenting on Youtube. :( It looked amazing though!
