The gold glitch has been around. If you do a search, you'll see a couple threads where we tracked the glitch. It can lead to dropped dialog options and thus be a game stopping bug.
You're right on this!
http://skyrimforums.org/members/anathoth.3074/, http://skyrimforums.org/threads/gold-not-appearing-in-inventory-glitch.3564/ created a new post here with the same issue I'm facing right now:
"I was outfitting my house in Whiterun via the Jarl's steward, and the 11k in gold I had abruptly ceased to be visible in my inventory. It's still there in that I can use it to purchase items in shops, and it displays the gold amount when I bring my inventory up, but it isn't visible with the other items in my inventory itself. The dialog box for further house upgrades with the steward doesn't display, as it behaves as if I in fact have no gold.
After this happened with one character, upon checking, I noticed it has in fact also now happened to all characters from all saves on my system. Gold is there, but not among my inventory items.
I had been using the glitch for obtaining house furnishings from the steward for free when it happened. Anyone else experience this? I've used the glitch to obtain or furnish the Whiterun house twice previously, without issue.
Perhaps the steward doesn't take kindly to being fleeced after all.."
http://skyrimforums.org/members/xscode.3634/ reply was: "My gold disappeared right after I finished the "escape from Cidhna mine" quest. The amount shows in the menu at the bottom, but not the actual "item" itself.
I can still buy from traders, but anything thats done from a conversation menu, bribe, invest etc. is not available anymore. Confirmed that all my previous saved games now have the same issue.
Playing on PC... no glitches or cheats used. Need HELP PLEASE..."
I have explored all (I guess) avenues to be able to continue enjoing Skyrim. Steam allows to create multiple accounts from the same computer, but it's not possible to start a new game having just one CD-key. As far as I am aware, there is no way of resetting game cache, game play-time or achivements. Steam says, it's not possible at this time. So, if anyone else wants to start a new game on the same computer, the stats do not reset. Which means we can have 1000's of hours played and no way of knowing who achieved what!
To the point. I have bought Bethesdas games since Arena. I enjoyed all of them greatly. Now I have no other option to enjoy Skyrim, other than buy another copy and register it with Steam. This will prove to be the most expensive game I ever played... and I have played games for 30 years... that's right: 30 years. Now... do I pay for another copy or just download Skyrim from other sources (I know they exist).
I guess Steam doesn't give a [censored], but what about Bethesda?
