Gold disapearing from inventory menu

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 6:02 am

Hi, everyone.
I have just made a stupid move: I stored all my money in a barrel in Riften with several other items. After getting it all back the money does not show in my inventory anymore (at the bottom of the screen it still shows the exact amount). Now, this is not an issue with traders, but I am no longer able to give/bribe. All my save games are affected.
Is there any fix for this, other than start a new game?
Thanks in advance for any advice. Kind regards to any helpfull soul out there!

PC... I am using mods but it never happend before, up until the point when I stored my gold in a barrel then retrieving it... As I said, all my saved games are corrupted now. I wonder if starting a new game will fix it, or I need to re-install Skyrim?

You can't see Gold in your normal inventory.

...but, you also say:
...but I am no longer able to give/bribe.
I'm guessing you've tried to buy stuff from vendors?

I can buy and sell staff, and although I have @ 6000 gold, in a brawl fight I'm told: "come back when you have the money"... This glitch have already been reported, but so far ther's no cure!

I've just started a new game. I collected my first 3 gold coins... nothing changed. I guess I need to re-install Skyrim (I am talking about over 200 hours into the game so far... it svcks big time). Well, I'll be more careful when storing items in containers. DO NOT STORE YOUR GOLD!!!

Can you keep your saved game files? They may be OK since all of them seem to be affected it could be a corrupted game file and not something unique to your saves.

Don't ever store anything in BARRELS. They respawn if you're out of the cell for 30 game days and apparently bug out in general. :o

Thank you for your hint, it gives me hope. I stored those items for several game minutes only. The reason being: I thought that killing Grelod the Kind, I will find myself imprisoned for a criminal offence, so I uploaded my stolen goods in a
barrel near the Orphanage (with the gold). How odd, that was not the case...

Gold acts weird, too, sometimes. At one point I had like 300K and it was flagged stolen. At that point I had stolen maybe 100 (yes, one hundred) if even that much. I put it all in a container (chest I think - definitely not a barrel :P) and the Stolen tag was cleared. Since then I've not stolen any gold because, even though I don't get arrested (Persuade or bribe my way out), had I gotten arrested and lost all that gold I know myself well enough to know that I would've smashed the disk and never bought another Bethesda game ever again.

LOL... that's the thing. My gold was tagged, so my first thought was to store it for later retrieval. I rather, bloody loose it than now considering starting all over again. I believe, your point is well defined: don't steal money! It can be made easily some other ways. Thank you. I am old enough, but the old saying still applies: you learn untill you die...

Wanna sort your stolen gold from the honestly gotten gold? I have not tried it with gold but I did this with about 50 Common Soul Gems.

They were ALL as a group marked in red. I dropped 'em on the ground and the gems separated into honest gem groups and stolen gem groups. Something like 42 as a group labelled in white and the other group of 8 stolen gems labeled in red.

Should be similar for gold. Or anything else that gets grouped in the inventory.

Only problem is that dropping gold is only an option for those of us on PCs. I've never tried it to see if the hot gold separates from the cool gold, lol.

Yeah, gold might be a special undroppable item. It doesn't show as a regular inventory item unless you are storing some of it or giving it.

But I would have thought this method of separation of hot from cool items previously lumped as a group all tagged hot doesn't depend on the platform you're using. Does it?

Having said that, how do the guards know what is stolen gold? I've never seen it tagged red in my inventory, not like soul gems for example. Come to think of it, nothing shows as stolen in your inventory until you store it in a container.

I've seen gold tagged as stolen in inventory, but you only see it there when there's an option to give or store it. As for dropping it, the form is player.drop f n, where n is the quantity. If you dropped it all, assuming it doesn't split like you suggested, you'd drop one coin worth the full amount, lol!

Be careful about dropping filled Soul Gems: there have been reports that if you drop filled Soul Gems they are emptied when you drop them - I guess the soul escapes. Some have reported that even storing them in containers will empty them. I've never dropped them, but I have stored them and so far stored ones have retained the souls.

That would be interesting to see if there are 500K individual coins laying in a pile or if it's represented by one huge coin purse.

On PS3 the items aren't red in your inventory, but the word "Stolen" appears in the upper right corner of the description card when you view it.

Hey Buckom :D I've stored hundreds of Black and Grand Soul gems filled with a Grand soul, in various House chests. I've also dropped a lot of filled Grand Soul gems, to use as decoration and I've never had to deal with "escaped souls" :) (yea, I'm on PC).

That would be interesting to see if there are 500K individual coins laying in a pile or if it's represented by one huge coin purse.
I've dropped 500 gold before and it IS just ONE coin lol I dropped it in front of some beggar's feet, hoping he would pick it up, but noooooooooooo, guess some of the "RADIANT AI" isn't quite that radiant. LOL

OK back to Fallout New Vegas forums! :)

@ the OP: Wow, that is a weird bug. In all the time since release, nobody ever mentioned anything like that. I wonder if that bug crept into the game via one of the patches. I've stored Gold before, in the safe in the Solitude House, because I just had too much and I wanted to go back to being poor LOL I also started to pay my 'help' (House carls) and stored gold in their inventory. I never had any issues once I retrieved it. However, playing TES games, one certainly knows NOT to store items in Barrels. :( It's strange though that even your new game is affected by that bug.

Are you on PC? Have you tried to clear the game cache through Steam?

Er, I thought dropped filled soul gems no longer freed their souls. Wasn't that fixed in a recent patch? IIRC it was fixed in 1.4.

I've never tested it. I kinda' hope they didn't unless they also fixed the bug wherein lower souls can be captured in higher gems. :o
