A great article about female armour and the absurdity of six

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 5:09 pm

Yeah, the article is good an the OP fails.

I agree 100% with the armour issue. Well, except in Fallout 3. I find the raiders in skimpy armour just serves nicely to re-enforce the fact that they're dumb as bricks. My female characters prefer to look bad-ass an that means questing in the most efficient gear possible. :D

I think the notion of imposing a sense of how the world works on more fantasy artists would work well not only for amour, but just about everything in games and on TV. Why does my house in Solitude have vaulted ceilings that aren't correctly constructed? Why do dungeons always have piles of rubble in places with no signs of structural collapse? Why is there always fresh fruit next to the lit candles in sealed draugr tombs? Why can't my female wear pants?

There's actually at least one mod that decreases the sixualization of armoured females in Skyrim: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3296 (slightly modified male armour for females)

I read that article. it made a lot of sense :)

A mod witch makes the ladies of the game wear more reviling armor is extremely far down on my list. As the article said. I want a kind of armor that makes sense to wear, but maybe a revealed shoulder or tight to the legs or something makes it sixier than some "armor" that doesn't even protect you... I would want my spouse to at least have her guts inside her body :)

Well I only say this, I don't play these games for the "realism". I play them for enjoyment and occasional eye-candy won't hurt. A chain-mail bikini can add an invisible magic barrier around the skin for all we know, who cares, it's fantasy after all, not reality and history

Skyrimwear is really dumb. Men and women - all running around half naked during blizzards and ice cold, windy weather.
I live in an unheated trailer (it was 6f degrees yesterday in here) and play with hot water bottles and blankets and frozen fingers, so I find with Skyrim I have to keep going into a house and get to fire just to warm up.
I've put Skyrim down for this northern winter - it's too cold in game for me. I'll wait till summer when I need a cool down. Now I'm warming up in Morrowind.

There are no unrealistically skimpy female armors in Skyrim. Male and female armors show the same amount of skin in general, and the only "revealing" armors are some of the low-level light armors and the female Ancient Nord Armor (which Aela wears), that's rare as hell.
Things like certain fur variants and hide are supposed to provide very sparse cover, as they're rough, weak, patchwork armors. The armor equivalent of wearing rags. Ironically, the female version of those armors less skimpy and provide more cover than the male versions, what with the taboo on bare female chests.

So... there's one instance of Bethesda making female armor skimpy for aesthetic appeal in the entire game, and it's extremely rare.

Yeah, this thread is so relevant to Skyrim.

And who cares what people mod into their games? Is the fact that people like looking at attractive things supposed to be surprising or scandalous? geesh.
And what's with the focus on females? As someone who likes dressing my male characters in the barest furs, I feel slightly insulted that all the hate is being piled on sixual objectification of women. Men can be objects of sixual attention too you know.

edit: The article is a good read, even if the thread is [censored]. And the author won massive props from me for labeling one section "5.2 Go for the eyes Boo "

Getting more to the topic...
As for armor - it's all too much. Leather and fur is as far as I want to go.
I'm an oldtimer and have a hard time enjoying a game when I'm supposed to fight a woman - I would like a mod that puts all the women back into housekeeping, shops and shopping, mothering and milkmaids and leave the fighting to men. When I first played Oblivion I was shocked at the TV cop-like attitude the women guards have.

What? what does this have to do with Skyrim?

No armor in Skyrim is overtly sixual, then again, when I was a kid I thought Prince lyrics were socially acceptable so meh.

I'm female, I play as a female character - while I don't want to look like an utter slapper I also don't want to look like a walking tank. I want something lightweight, practical for hunting in but that goes nicely with the jewellery I am wesring - so it has to have a decent neckline. At the moment I'm wearing some fur armour but the bra bit on that looks like it was cut into shape by a hagraven who couldn't hold the scissors. So I'm on the look out for something different. I'll know it when I find it. I'm probably going to have to wait until someone mods it in.
