Helmets are forced unto the player...

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:21 am

With the armor perks including that you MUST wear a Helmet for the extra bonus (and to me it's worth it.. the Helm is the 2nd strongest piece of your armor). IDK just.. in a way it feels forced unto the player. Yes you look all BA and whatnot, but that's not my point. You get that nice lil hefty armor bonus as well.

I just like my character's Hair/Face not being hidden all the time. Anyone agree?

What do you think about Helmets?

EDIT: Also referring to the Reflect Blows (Heavy Armor), and Deft Movement (Light Armor). "while wearing all Heavy/Light Armor: head, chest, hands, feet."

Really?

News to me. Half of my characters run around without helmets, and seem to do just fine. Hell, one of my characters is over the armor cap WITHOUT a helmet.

The bonus isn't essential to the end-game, I function fine without a helmet.

I haven't really been using them on my current sword-and-shield character, mainly b/c I like to see my character's face.

And the game forces armor on you.

And gauntlets.

And boots.

And rings.

And necklaces.

And weapons! AND SOME TIMES EVEN SHIELDS!

Horrible, isn't it?

Don't need helmet to reach armor cap. So don't need helmet, so helmet isn't forced.

The only thing I'm forced to do is:

1. Pay taxes
2. Finish the "honey do" list every Saturday

Otherwise I'm not "forced" to do anything else in life.

Also the fact that Helms look bad on pretty much anyone not a Nord, Redguard, Imperial, or Breton (human-ish races). Any other race? PAHAHA...

I just put a Leather helm on my Wood Elf.. and my big V-shaped foreheads poking through the top. Orly? I know how to mold a character face, thank you.

I remember back in Oblivion NOBODY ever used Axes or Helmets (at all). Now it's like the new fashion trend. lolz.

You can hit the armour cap without wearing a helmet. What type of armour do you like to wear?

NVM I see that someone made my point in the second post and you neatly ignored it.

I don't use helmets either. Didn't use helmets in Morrowind or in Oblivion and I'm not about to start now.

Basically, my point is why do I HAVE to wear a Helmet for said bonuses. It's like saying "Here's a way to make your Armor THE best it can be! But you have to wear this Helmet at all times."

Why couldn't there be perks for people that DON'T wear helms? Not trolling either. IDK just a random thought that's been bugging me.. I see theres like a trillion people prolly readying there flame arrows..

I don't get the point of the thread. Is it that you want the armor bonus without actually having to wear the helmet?

Don't see this being a flame war (hides my vintage M2A1-7 Flamethrower).

But I can get by just fine on Expert without the benifts of using a helmet, or any other device on my noggin. To be honest, not having one adds an even greater challenge since you're nerfing yourself.

...You can reach the armour cap without a helmet, players who choose not to use a helmet aren't disadvantaged in any way.

The only small complaint I could see people making would be wasting perks on those set bonus perks, in order to reach the higher up perks. But every skill tree has useless perks which must be paid for as stepping stones. And besides, you only need very few well placed perks to turn your character into a horribly overpowered munchkin, a few wasted ones is definitely not a problem when you have 81 to spend.

Also remember that all of the people who bought those set bonus perks are wasting them just the same way you are, since they're probably well over the armour cap even without the perks contributing to their AR. How many people do I see on youtube with their legendary daedric armour.

Because the helmet is part of the armor. The armor has to be whole to be the best it can be. <_<

Wish people would quit being so literal and take a point.

I like the circlets with my light armor, protects my temple and I don't look like a condem. But thats the cost of full head coverage I suppose, although you'd think you'd dogde more easily without the extra weight and blinkers on.

It's a bit of a shame there's no helmets for beast races. I'm playing an Argonian (yes, peer pressure forced me to get Steam >.>) and of course I can't wear a helmet as I couldn't logically explain where my horns would go if I wore one. So... I don't.

But for all other races and as far as logic is concerned: The helmet is the most important piece of armour. NO sane warrior would fight without a helmet. For most medieval fighters, the helmet would be the only piece of metal (except for the bit at the end of their weapons) they'd equip for battle. Much less expensive than a full suit of maille (or, in very late periods, plate, but that wasn't commonly around until the very late medieval times). The thing is, the head is the most vulnerable part of the body, and easy to hit in melee. It's what you need to protect FIRST before thinking about chest armour or anything. Only protecting the chest is a very recent invention that came with modern firearms; the torso is simply the largest target, most shooters these days are trained to aim for the center of mass, so yes, police usually only wear ballistic armour to protect the chest. But this isn't a modern scenario, melee threats are common, and the head needs to be protected (don't forget that even today, soldiers always carry a helmet, while their body armour isn't always the best, depending on the deployment zone and nation of origin, of course; but if you can, the first piece of equipment you'd get, as a fighter, now and back in the middle ages, was a helmet... Well, after the weapon, that is).

So yes, not wearing a helmet should come with massive disadvantages in combat. It should be stupid. Only true problem is, as I said, beast races who'd need helmets that work for them.

I used a mod to make my helmet invisible. So now I get the bonuses while being able to see my hair. <3

I wish there were a way to have helmet display toggled off just when in cities, I don't mind it everywhere else.

I think there are some mods that allow helmet display to be toggled or disabled already, not sure how customizable they are.

You must be one of those utilitarian players who has to use the best gear, the best spells etc. I made some dragon scale armor but eventually I got enough HP I can get by with my nightingale armor in most situations. It makes the game a little harder but I'm fine with that. Now my character likes to bath and often I search for a waterfall and just go in my undies and dealing with a few sabre cats in your undies is a bit of a challenge, but its fun. So while I have some good gear I'm starting to leave it at home once in a while just to see if I can survive without it, so it made the game fun again by introducing new challenges myself.

I never even got all the perks for light armor, just a 60% increase and that's all I need.

Me, I don't care how many perks there are. Perks have nothing to do with it. I don't want to wear a helmet so I don't. It's as simple as that.

I play the way I want to play and I deal with the consequences. If I can't find a way to play a game they way I want to play it I find another game to play.

Holy crap, this again?

The helmets aren't for looks, they have armor ratings and you have to use them to get them.

Or you can use an enchanted head band, or hood, or hat, OR NOTHING.

Besides there being a million ways to reach the armor cap however you want, it doesn't really matter all that much anyways.

I use the best upgraded armor that I LIKE, but I don't even look at my armor rating. I'm not a tank, I'm a skill kill mofo with a bow bro.
