It's high time to cut the opening

Post » Wed Jul 11, 2012 8:16 am

I would love for Bethesda to remove the obligatory tutorial opening of Skyrim. I have seen the execution and the dragon, and I am just so fed up with crawling through the dungeon trying to get into the sun so I can start the game already. What if you could make it like with Oblivion and Fallout 3 and NV? Give us a chance to make a new character before exciting the dungeon.
Surely the developers have the skills to do this, shouldn't even take too much time, and if money is an issue there's always an opportunity to sell it as a dlc! I wouldn't mind paying a dollar for this feature, whilst the vampire lord, I can do without.

If there weren't penalties for swapping race and six in the showracemenu, I would use that any time I feel like a different character. It's just such a hassle starting a new game. Give us the option of editing race and six before exciting the dungeon, please.

I'll give you this OP, I was mighty surprised when there was no 'last chance, you wanna change anything?' prompt at the end of the opening dungeon.

And that's the way you respect the Lore and the game , cool.

I would like to have that neat little point you could make a save to skip the intro and still be able to make a new character. I don't have anything against the intro quest, but it does get repetative after a while.

What about making a save just when you get out of the dungeon?

Lol. When you've seen the same thing over and over again, it gets pretty boring.

In Morrowind, the opening wasn't very long, so sitting through it for the umpteenth time wasn't that bad.

In Oblivion, you could save right before exiting the sewers, allowing you to make entirely new characters off of that.

In Skyrim, you're forced to go through the tutorial every single time. Not to mention that it has probably the longest tutorial of any TES game to date.

Yeah, I was thinking of downloading that. That doesn't help XBox 360 and PS3 players, though. =/

That won't allow you to re-make the character. Changing name, race etc. We had that option in Oblivion and Fallout right before we exited the toturial so we could save a game there and be able to make a new game without having to do the toturial.

This indeed. I haven't played the original start for months. And choosing the "camping in the wilds" option practically just skips the tutorial dungeon.

It is a really good mod.

Especially if you're the roleplaying type, choose 'shipwrecked,' and have a hardcoe exposure or hunger mod installed.

When I start a new character, it's generally at about 5 in the morning and I'm not fully awake, and it works out quite nicely because once I come around (which tends to happen at the first standing stone), I don't really know how I got to where I am. Basically, doing this in a half-sleep is pretty much the same as skipping it entirely.

But it takes a certain kind of person to be able to do that. For the rest of the world, an option to save/recreate the character at the end of the tutorial would be excellent.

And that's great, but it's only for PC. Console players should also have options.

You're right it does get boring.

Morrowind +1
Oblivion +1 (save your game plus change race, birthsign etc before exiting the sewers)
Skyrim -1 (believe me you won't want to go through the dungeon tutorial they have in Oblivion Collector's Edition before Bethesda started to patch up the game, because it was the longest tutorial I've ever played and don't want to do that again)

I second this. I usually just accept the "preset model" to walk through most Bethesda tutorials as they often help me define my character from them. When I saw the "Skyrim" text, I thought to myself "Okay, now that I've seen what I'm in for, time to edit accordingly."

Next thing I saw was Alduin flying away, some guy in a red skirt rushing to a town I couldn't see, and standing alone looking like a bleached Fred Flintsone, half naked to boot.

Controller center button + Y + Nav to Settings + Delete = Aw, man! Now I have to do it again.

But hey, at least this time, I won't get burned to death by a pissed off dragon. ;)

I own the Oblivion Collector's Edition for the XBox 360, actually. =P

Skyrim's opening is much worse to sit through every time. You don't even get control of your character for the first few minutes.

If you are on PC then use these console codes.

Doing this will allow you to change your race without using showracemenu. You can get most race codes with the help race 0 command. Use PageUp and PageDown to scroll to the races at the top of the list. Unlike most other commands, the race needs to be specified in plain text and not the race's BaseID. I.e. setplayerrace nordrace. Creatures are available as race as well, but most creatures will have a buggy camera position in thirdperson. SetRace racename can also be used. Upon using this code, the character's hand will be bound like in the beginning of the game, but this can be undone by drawing a weapon. Will not mess up attributes/skills.
player.setrace

Save game to a named save . If the name contains spaces, it must be enclosed in double-quotes, i.e. save "My Skyrim Save" Note that this will overwrite an existing save of without prompting.
Appending the parameter "1" will create a file .ess.txt and open a texteditor upon it. This textfile contains a lot of dumped data and takes a while to write out (15 minutes observed) - the console and game is unresponsive during that.

Get a mod with an alternative beggining or make your own. You can change things with this game unlike others to what you want to do. If you don't mod ask the modders and there might be something already modded for what you are talking about. And also if you are on a PC you can use the console like Leonardo2 suggests.

I'm aware of that. In turn, I was referring to what you said.

Allow me to extrapolate upon my first two statements for the sake of clarity: Skyrim's intro is longer than Oblivion's (or at the very least, they are approximately the same length), and Skyrim's is much more tedious due to the initial lack of control in the beginning.

Not to mention that Skyrim's intro cannot be skipped over in future playthroughs without the use of mods (which 360 and PS3 users don't have access to).

I know you can use mods to get other openings like the alternete start and the harcore one "live another life " or whatever it's called. I use dozens of mods myself.
However this ladies and gentlemen is not something that the modding community should tackle on their own. It's infathomable that the developers haven't addresses this issue in the 8 months or so that have gone by since the game was released.

Release a patch or dlc or whatever and spare us those 10 minutes it takes to sprint to the tower, listen to: "Legends don't burn down villages, go up the tower, wait for dragon to bury poor sod in rubble, jump through the roof, sprint past the dragon(interrupting him!), listen to Hadvar and Raleif bicker, "come here, let me see if I can get those bindings off" Arrgh, and then blaze through the dungeon just because I want to play a dunmer instead of a bosmer. Sorry for the rant
Yeah, I am fed up with it

I agree. I have restartis, and over the years I've been through the openings of Elder Scrolls games more times than a calculator is able to add up. To me, Skyrim's opening is the most excruciatingly tedious game opening I have experienced in an Elder Scrolls game. It's even worse than some of the longer Origins in Dragon Age Origins (which could also be extremely tedious if you simply want to examine your character's appearance in-game to see if you need to change anything).
