Home-Builts and Pre-Builts

Post » Sat Jun 11, 2011 2:50 am

All these threads popping up recently about building your own PC have made me wonder just how many people here actually have built a PC and how many have pre-builts.

I just built a new PC about 2 1/2 weeks ago. This was the first one that I've ever built by myself, and it was super easy. My last desktop I picked out all of the parts, but payed a little extra to have the people at Micro Center build it for me.

Home built...because I can't fit 16 hard drives in a cheap prebuilt case.

Mine's custom. I guess you could say it's the first one I've built, but I've replaced all the original parts at least once in its lifetime (just not all at once).

I thought it was easy to built my first PC... but then again I've been upgrading and tinkering on my various computers for as long as I can remember, so I already knew most of the build process.

I haven't owned a pre-built PC since a '386 at 33MHz was considered blazing fast. :P http://leon2ky.com/leon/turbo_button.jpg FTW!

Anyway, yeah, I lost count of the number I've built a long time ago. :nerd:

Built it with the help of my Dad, for when I got lost in the cables. :P

I'm pretty good at it now though.

My first PC was a Dell, custom builds ever since. I've swapped hardware too much to keep track of separate builds.

I tend to build my own. I always tell myself I'm going to make the wiring nice and neat this time, but invariably get frustrated halfway through so it still looks quite messy. I also seem to be the nemesis of case fans, all of which are noisy, rattly or seize up. Or all three.

Where did you find a case that could fit all that?

Actually I'm not sure if I do. Do I want to know?

Also, I just built my first PC a few months back, petter then any PC I've ever had, as I've always had to deal with other people's leftovers.

My case can fit at least 6, but 16???

First computer I got when a little kid was pre-built, second was a custom job but not built by me, same with third, and my fourth and latest PC was built by myself. I would never ever go pre-built ever if I could somehow help it, and from now on I'll build my own PC's. Granted I did have some help from this very forum at points, and it all worked out well.

The Lian Li version couldn't cut it due to the parts for it being scarce.

Home-built... I, uh, had some help with it. Okay, mostly I just sat and watched and helped with the cable ties. :P

I think I still have an old Philips thing with a 386 in it sitting at the back of the garage somewhere.

My PC was prebuilt, but I bought a cheap one and just replaced the components with better ones to change it into a decent gaming machine. It was something of a compromise between spending huge amounts on a prebuilt one and buolding one myself. In the end it worked out at half what it would have cost to buy the components already installed.
