I hope with all the money Bethesda makes they'll be able to

I hope they hire more/better writers,

I agree, WRITERS people...cutting edge games of today can challenge even the TV and movie industry in quality of script, Skyrim doesn′t even come close (but better than Oblivion).

I suppose no one realises that most of the money Bethesda makes will actually go into their pockets.

It`s capitalism I`m afraid.

The problem cited by Todd before release wasn't funding, it was the crappy capacity restrictions on the 360

So why then do they have different V.A's saying the same line? There are at least six different actors who say the line, "Some people call this junk, me I call them treasures" That takes up the same amount of disk space as six different lines would. Seems like they could have used that space a lot better to me.

This is what I hope they do with the next game-

Make the game with all text. Once the game is "finished" then hire the voice actors. That way, all the changes have been made, all the characters are fleshed out, the writers are happy with how they matured and developed the dialog, and the actors read their lines then the game is released.

Oh, but that would be sensible!

Committing to fully-voiced NPCs simply creates a 'tail wagging the dog' situation. NPC interactions should be limited by the writers' imaginations not the amount room left on the disc for sound files.

Can't really fault Skyrim for lack of voice actors. Seventy should be plenty. Still, I can't help feeling the results should have been better. I can't put my finger on whether it's the actors, the writers, the sound editors or someone else that are most to blame.

I find it hard to beleive they used 70 plus actors/actresses for the game, 40 or maybe 50 sounds about right. The thing is we are all going on Bethesda's word they used that many, they could be feeding us all b.s.

If Todd farted and told the world it smelled like eggs and it actually did not smell like anything, people would probably beleive him it smells like eggs.

Companies have a habit of feeding paid customers bullsh!t, espeically what they want to hear.

Yeah, you're right. 70 voice actors is chump change.

@Bats, or...you could look at the credits/IMDB and actually see the full list of voice actors like every other reasonable human being has already done. :goodjob:

I could but then again its easy to make up names....just saying is all, sounds fishy to me. At least they kept Sheagorath's voice the same :D

The problem isn't the number of voice actors, it's their management. They take good Voice Actors like Wes Johnson and give him like THREE characters in the entire game. Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger, that Romanian woman, the voice of Sven, the voice of Ysolda and the voice of Belethor are freaking EVERYWHERE.

This is the problem with the voice acting in the game. It is mind boggling how poorly they used these resources. My follower is Marcurio. His voice, his exact voice seems to be everywhere and is at least a couple of characters in each town and is used in quests as well. There are locations in the game where I can hear him two or three times (plus one if I turn around and talk to him ).

I'm not arguing against the management of the resources for voices in TES. They DID have 70 voice actors, it's just that most of those actors are only used for 3 NPC's each. Just the other day I heard a voice in the Thieves Guild quest that I had NEVER heard in the entire game, and he was no on special. I was like..what? I never heard his voice again. So one actor for one NPC? That's pretty silly. But there ARE over 70 VA's.

I love Skyrim, but I have to agree with this.

In fairness, the voice acting is better than it was in Oblivion, in terms of performance quality. But a very small number of voice actors still seem to be performing a significant majority of NPCs.

But again, at least they aren't terrible--like the Orc voice in Oblivion that still gives me nightmares.

Also I can't grasp the laziness in voice acting anyway. Give them some freedom ffs rather than all 10 voice actors reading "some may call this junk, me, I call them treasures". THEY ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE WHY CANT THEY SAY A DIFFERENT LINE IT TAKES 10 SECONDS TO COME UP WITH A DIFFERENT LINE TO THAT ONE.

The most annoying thing in Bethesda games this one.

I agree...we need a different voice for every single character...every single one...drunks and all need a different voice

I remember in new Vegas how I loved sunny smiles and spent hours with her during tutorial and in goodsprings and then on my first adventure outside of goodsprings I travel yo primm and low and behold I hear sunny smiles at a table talking to me and I thought...hummm...why are you here and then I realized it was just an average Joe npc with sunnys' voice....killed the immersion

Would be nice, but totally unrealistic.

This is like the only thing that actually annoys me, hearing the same voice within 2 out of 3 people. But whatever.

^This. Fully voiced dialogues sacrifice too much content and options. Voiceovers should be limited to ambient voices - battlecries, greetings, NPCs talking to each other, laughter, etc. Combined with good animations, this gives enough "feel" of the character, enables more dialogue options and content, and makes modding much easier.
Besides, just imagine how many differenct ambient voices they could have done with the same amount of voiceactors. Greetings for every race, disposition, class, ... The world would feel a lot more alive.

Not for me it wouldn't, and I would NOT buy it if they did this. Thankfully, I seriously doubt they will ever go back to text. I have to read spreadsheets and other crap all day long at work. The LAST thing I want to do when I get home is have to read more crap.

I have read currently they hire voice actors and then they are locked into what they have done in the event someone wants to make changes. They have to either stay with what they have or rehire the actors to update lines.

They won't. I can't get my head round people believing they'll ever go back to text based dialogue. It'd be the commercial equivalent of having the whole game in black and white and burned onto a gramophone record. These olde worlde yearnings for days of yore are never going to be fulfilled now we're in the era of talkies.

Yea, the limited voicing has been a Bethesda staple for a while. They could at least have these actors make an effort to make their voices sound different as a voice actor can change and create a new tone and personality, but they don't even bother to coach them to have any personality. Bioware and CD project have done outstanding work for the most part on their voice acting, Bethesda needs to up their game. I sort of don't get it, there is usually a director that is supposed to tell the talent what a character is about and guide them to sound like him/her, but whoever does this for Bethesda just seems to go, Oh F-it...NEXT!
