How did you resolve this question for yourself?

That possession bit is just my poorly worded equivalent of "life is what you make of it".

Oh okay. I wont dispute that :)

Maybe. But surely you've shot yourself in the foot if you waste your whole life looking for a meaning when there isn't one? Or if you spend it devoted to a meaning that turns out to be wrong?

Well, that's why we fight wars over a metaphysical game of russian roulette. If there isn't one and you resolve to just get through life as amicably as possible, you'll have lived better than anyone else who wasted theirs looking for one. But if there is one and you do that, you just wasted your life. It comes down to the choice, and whichever path you choose, you better hope it was the right one.

The existance of everything has no purpose, in my opinion.

The very existence itself is just a temporary mishap. Everything there is, is only a brief flash of existence in timeless non-existence. Same applies to our lifes, of course in extremely miniscule scale.

I propably am wrong partially or completely, but that'll have to do until i find out.

The meaning of life is to try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.

There is no inherent purpose to life and it is only when we put meaning into it does life have a preceived value and purpose but it is just that; preceived and nothing more.

There is no one universal meaning, it's unique to each individual.

What if knowing that meaning was the key to making your life better?

I fail to see how such a "what if" could possibly carry any weight without anything backing it up. It's not like we have any hints or templates that suggest a "meaning of life" even exists, let alone what it would be. Without that the What If of what the meaning could be is effectively infinite. Why would I struggle to find out something that is basically impossible to find out, and which I may not even realize if I do, or which may have no impact? I don't stress over "what if it was a winner" every time I don't buy a lottery ticket, especially a lottery that doesn't tell you if you've won, and which probably cancels the win if you buy any tickets after that unknown winner, which you almost certainly would if you're the lottery type. But I'm rambling and probably both of us misunderstood a point in the other's quote.

Life is the sum total of this moment. Make sure you enjoy it.

Aww, the cat hissed at me from suddenly-tired-of-attention syndrome. Now my life is ruined.

For me it's just live in the moment. Nothing to do with meditation like in the poll.

My religon resolves it for me. Nuff said.

EDIT: I just noticed that anybody whom stated "religon" kept their answer very one-lined, but if course, the reason is clear.

I have a very humanistic approach to the meaning of life...so here I go with my long philosophy.

The meaning of life itself is nothing. There is no true meaning of life other than whatever religion you believe in. I believe in my religion and I believe it's true(to stop a flame war, I will not mention what religion). It doesn't really matter what religion you are, just that you find happiness(I mean I would disagree with your views unless they're the same religion as me but I wouldn't start flaming you, just be happy). In my honest opinion, the true meaning of life is what you make of it. Whether it be your religion, code, doctrine, whatever. But the only reason you should keep on living is because we are human and we deserve to live. And happiness.

Humans as a whole should have a meaning to life. And that meaning is for humans to take place as the dominant race in the entire universe. Not just as a country but as a species. Extend our boundaries to the stars and then some. Extend our knowledge as far as we can take it. Make our race technologically, morally, philosophically, and intellectually superior to any species that came before and will come with us.

We humans have that right to be the masters of the universe. The universe should be, some day, our plaything. And THAT is what I work for. For humans to stop petty conflict among species and rise up to unite as one species. Nations may exist, crime may still exist, but humans as a whole should unite to survive. And THAT is the meaning of life.

Oh and on a side note, if humanity ever does unite under one banner for our species...our nature to kill can be taken out on aliens if they do exist. Go massacre a few planets. Oh and if they fight back, nuke them. Humans deserve everything the universe has.

In my opinion there is no inherent meaning to life or the universe, rather life has the meaning we put in to it.

In addition....I take meaning out of my own life, with the actions I do and the decisions I take.

# 6 states:
"I've found that life has no meaning, but we can MAKE it seem meaningful by engaging in satisfying relationships/favourite activities(which don't neccesarily result in valuable results)."

I could take # 6 and turn it this way:

"I've found that life has meaning, but we can MAKE it seem meaningless by not engaging in satisfying relationships/favorite [good] activities (which necessarily result in valuable results)."
This is the way in which I disagree with # 6.

If the meaning of life is simply to enjoy the moment, I'll remember that come tax time, or the next time I have a flat tire, the next time my computer crashes, lose or can't find a job, if some one cheats on me, or the next time I'm at a funeral. That approach is much too simplistic, and it's a complicated world. It might sound good and seem to feel good in this moment, but it just doesn't work in the warp and woof of life....and its moments.

As colder shouldered as I am towards my own religion, I still feel like it will present me with my meaning of life, further down the road.

The only meaning of life right now is to mean something in everyone elses lives...and i'll get to it eventually...as soon as I finish a couple more games. :P

To laugh, to learn, to love.

I think if you can do all of those things you've had a fairly fulfilling life. And if you continue to do them all through your whole life, you're pretty damn lucky.
