How important is selecting the "right" race?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:04 am

this can either go two ways in my opinion either you are more interested which race is stronger and which classes are stronger. which goes back to my point about guys not caring about the journey and more interested in wining fast and getting ahead , or you miss the individuality that separates each race .

which is it ?
i miss the individuality that separates races. i think u should still have different attributes and stuff similar to oblivion. you could still be who you want a do what you want.

i could stiill run around as a orc pure mage or be a little bosmer chargeing around with a warhammer bigger than me. obviously them two wouldnt be as good as a altmer mage or a nord carrying a warhammer but thats how it should be.
its alot more lore friendly to.

Well since they got rid of classes and actual attributes races matter little anymore, which is quite sad.

Races never mattered anymore than they do currently, attributes and classes made no more differences in the races.

In Morrowind and Oblivion, you could be just as good a mage as an Orc or a Nord as you could be with a Breton or a High Elf, you could be just as good of a warrior with a Wood Elf or a Khajiit as you could be with a Redguard. Let's not make up false claims about the games, past and present, to suit an irrational agenda.

Yes, actually that bosmer charging around with a warhammer bigger than him would be just as good as the nord, and the orc pure mage would be just as good as the altmer. These are blatant misrepresentations of the facts.

Apparantly compared to previous TES titles it matters very little in this one. I always make it match anyway, but you don't really have to. Plus, breaking away from the stereotypical classes (warrior, mage, thief) is what makes the game interesting and fun. Play an archery/conjuration mage. Maybe you play a 2h weapon, light armor, restoration character.

Mix it up and have fun. :D

It means next to nothing and that's what i really like about this game compared to Oblivion where Nords for example is quite bad at pure spellcasting so blade was necessary but in this game they're much more well balanced towards all playstyles.

Nords were not bad at spellcasting in Oblivion.

No ? 60 start and 250 max magicka without enchanting, they are good for healing and hack away with your blade but for actually rely on spellcasting i find them terrible but it's good that you found them good though.

why are you listening to the Games Radar beginner guide on choices for a game that is supposed to be all about your choices

Because if I don't I WILL screw up my game somewhere. To me, there's nothing intuitive about a game like this. Unfortunately it looks like it's going to end up being moot anyway.
Quite sad, really. The race system could be a great source of providing the game with replay value, but instead they're just diminishing it's value to nothing...

As far as I'm concerned, race should be a cosmetic difference only. I don't like being forced to play a character I don't like.

Right now I am playing a http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/Skyrim/Skyrim220.jpg. Heavy Armor, two handed sword, and only a healing spell and oakenflesh for magic. I am having a blast!

Most important thing is to pick a race you like to play with. (I prefer to use mostly Nord, Imperial and Orc.) If you can't get in your character it will kill your interest in the game. That's the reason why I personally won't play with beast races - I never get into those characters.

No? In Morrowind, High elves had the highest max magicka multplier, followed by Bretons. Which means they had more starting magicka than anyone, and could boost their max magicka far higher than anyone with fortify intelligence enchants. In both MW and OB, Bretons were near imm7une to all magic. It took one lucky drop in onblivion (Mundane ring) and Bretons were untouchable by magic. In MW, a Breton with the saviour's hide could wear Boots of Speed with impunity. Let's not forget the fact that beast races were barred from one clothing item.

No in Skyrim the races have been pretty much levelled out. That being said, magic users will enjoy definitive advantage with Altmer. Any player will be better off with a Breton because they will be that much closer to to magic resist 85%, and Nord/Dunmer come in at a solid 2nd place for their immunities. Orcs probably have the only useful once a day ability.

What really god nerfed in Skyrim is birth signs.

I think its more a point of what you want to look at for so 'X' amount of hours.

And as for the racials, each one has its benefit. Bosmer one appears pretty poor, untill you use it and it comes off and you think, "I will always role Bosmer, racial is awesome". Then you role a nord and the racial saves you once more, you think the same. Personally I wouldnt say any racial is better than others, because they are all situational and all have a large CD. In fact I rarely use racial abilities, I prefer a decent passive one.

Useful abilities:

Resist poison 50%
+50 pts magica
Resist frost 50%

all the remaining have a smaller lasting impact on gameplay and, consequently, they're less appealing to someone who want to engineer his character build before starting a new game.

if you're on PC, there's a MOD which let you choose starting bonuses and abilities; while It might seem a bit of cheating playing like, say, a Kajiit with +50 magica bonus, the ability to distribute the skill points was present in Morrowind once you choose a 'freeform' character class (which was named 'adventurer').

I think +25 Magic Resistance that Bretons have has bigger lasting impact than the ones you mentioned.

My bad, I forgot that! Indeed it's very useful, considering the dearth of equipment with a 'resist magic' enchantment

race only affects starting bonuses and race powers...altmer start with a bonus to magic, making them a good choice for mages but you can be a good nord mage if you put in work. It makes things easier if you pick a race thats strong in the skills you like but in the end it doesnt make much.difference

Even if it did make a difference which race you choose, I'd still choose for RP purposes. It doesn't matter to me if one race is more suited to a role than another, using the lesser suited race would provide more of a challenge within that role.

I choose to play as a Nord because I live in Sweden and I strongly feel the connection between Vikings and Nords.

Even though my playstyle isn't technically the best for Nords, my character is still great, so I think it's more about to choose a race that you feel that you will enjoy playing as.

Yea, in Morrowind Bretons had a very minor Fortify Magicka multiplier, and a very minor increased starting Intelligence, which gave a higher magicka off the bat, but was a bonus that was very easily made up with any other race that put a focus on Intelligence and had any kind of Fortify Magicka effects.

Altmer had more of a multiplier, but that still exists with their +50 to starting magicka.

You say Bretons were very good against magicka attacks, and they still are with their magic resistance and their Dragonskin ability which absorbs magical attacks. This hasn't changed.

And how did birthsigns get nerfed when the same exact concept applies with the standing stones?

bethesda blended the system (Race, classes) together because they wanted people to be what ever they wanted whenever they wanted . i think Bethesda is trying to get the player to enjoy the journey and evolution of there character rather then wining .

but then again is or was any race or class stronger then one another in Skyrim and also in Oblivion ?

Its not so much about winning fast and getting ahead earlier, it has a lot to do with replay value. Before in in Morrowind and Oblivion, you chose your race and they were very different from each other, because of Attribute differences. Then you chose your Birthsign and each one offered different gameplay advantages. In Skyrim they dumbed it down by saying,"hey, you don't need to choose your Birthsign. Just pick a new one whenever you want." Makes no sense. Birthsign are things your character is born under, not standing stones. The leveling system in Skyrim is one dimensional. In Oblivion and Morrowind, if you leveled your Blade skill, it would in turn, raise your Strength attribute. That is two dimensional leveling, which has more depth and is more rewarding.

And no, perks do not replace Attributes.

^ To me, yes, as a matter of fact they do. Not only do I feel they replace Attributes, but I feel they offer more depth and versatility than Attributes ever could.

It's easy to max out your skills regardless of which race you choose. Pick the race you like best, based on the lore and their appearance and society.

For example I picked Nords as I like to make myself in game, Nord is pretty much the closest I can get to myself in-game, while they are mainly based on Scandinavian culture I think very small aspects of Scottish culture are also included in the Nords, or so I read anyway.
