IGN Says Bethesda's "Golden Reputation Is Tarnished"

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 9:48 pm

Hopefully that'll teach them not to develop on a console platform.

Abandoning Xbox 360 would be absurd. The 360 sales outrank the other 2 platforms by quite a bit.

PS3 seems to be a quirky platform to dev for ...

Two questions
1. What "Golden Reputation"?
2. Who really cares what IGN thinks?

If you live in 2007, maybe, but now? No, not at all. Most multiplatform companies are doing very well with the PS3, now... very well. This issue is Bethesda's fault, not some inherent fault of the platform. That's like saying crappy ports to the PC are crappy because it's a problem with PCs. It's not.
I agree with you but have to add a few caveats. Ultimately, Beth developed this game and wrote the code for it, so they have to take issue with fixing it on the PS3 especially, so in that I agree with you; they have a lot at stake on that platform since it has sold very well on it. Anyway, the PS3 still is a very difficult platform to make games for from scratch, unless you're studio that works with the system specifically (like Naughty Dog). The problem is the 360 was the lead hardware for making the game, then ported. The 360 is much more similar to a PC than the PS3's CPU architecture is. What Beth should have done, even if it cost more money, is to make the game separately for each console platform. Oblivion for the PS3 was a whole different game designed specifically for it, and not ported, though it still had issues. It played very well in most respects.

Also, the "multiplatform companies" you mentioned have typically made separate developments for each console on typically the first of a series. COD:MW was designed for each system, once it was polished, they were able to port one to the other certain aspects, saving money while ensuing releases were easy to do, because the engine didn't change. It's when the game is ported that it typically does poorly, mainly 360 to PS3, but if the PS3 is the lead, it really doesn't have much of an effect for poorer quality going to the 360.

Two other game anologies;

Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 was released a year after the 360 version so Bioware could specifically work with the PS3 hardware. It has a different engine aspects and played very well, though there were some issues.

Bayonetta, the 360 was the lead platform with Platinum Games, while Sega did the port to the PS3 from the 360 version and it was a train wreck with pretty scathing reviews, while the 360 version got rave reviews. While I do think the game makers should take responsibility, you can bet Sony will be ditching the Cell processor for use in the PS4.

EDITED: for clarification.

Cell Processor is the most amazing CPU to grace console gaming. Beth should be ashamed for this sloppy port.

This is an article, which may or may not have actual facts in it. It certainly has opinions in it. Read this article as you SHOULD read anything: critically.

You see, children, your English teachers weren't just wasting your time when they were trying to teach you to read critically. They were trying to teach you a skill that would (can you believe it!?) help you in life! To sum it up simply:

1. Read things at an arm's length; in other words, don't just let other people put ideas in your head. Look at their ideas and thoughts, and evaluate those ideas with your own criteria.
2. Make a decision (or series of decisions) based on step one and the material presented-- do you agree? Do you disagree? Did the author provide enough evidence to support their claims? Did the author leave out contrary evidence that would detract from their claims? Is the author giving fair treatment to the subject?

Seriously people, stop just posting articles from these websites and saying (or, in this case, implying) "Look, [insert OPINION here] is official because this website says so!" Nothing about an internet article makes anything official. This is their opinion. Read this article and ask yourself: Did Bethesda ever have a "golden reputation"? What is the definition of a "golden reputation"? What would constitute revoking a "golden reputation"?

And, as always, read THIS post critically! :)

It works much better as a number cruncher than it does for graphics as it stands right now. Simply because of its design, it is very difficult to make all of the processors work properly and more importantly, in unison. Developers still scream at the asymmetrical design and its difficulties. If it were so amazing for gaming and it really could be (the physics effects it could produce alone would be astounding), you would think gaming rigs would offer it.

Well, I just watched my G4TV recording of them giving their GOTY Award to TESV: Skyrim and I think that's who I'll stick with. They seem to be on the same page as me and IGN just isn't. I knew Skyrim would have some problems at release and I was ready. It's the GOTY at my house anyway. :)

Sorry, but you are wrong, the fact that it is asymmetrical makes it impractical for PC use. Sony would sell it for use anywhere on any platform accept its direct competitor for consoles, for use in typical mainstream computers, it jsut simply wouldn't function well, it is a great number cruncher more than anything as of now. They already are available for use in servers, etc.. Another thing, Intel has nothing to do with the Cell, it was a collaboration of primarily Sony and IBM, with a few other Japanese tech industries involved. The Cell has actually been in in use since 2001.

I've noticed zero problems besides the occasional freeze like once every two weeks it seems, and that's it.
IGN blows, in my opinion, but whatever.

So are you one of the "I have no problem so it doesn't exist!" people?

Wait, what? Bethesda's reputation is that their games have insane amount of bugs and that they couldn't progam for the PS3 if their lives depended on it.

All this OP does is hang out on the forum for a game he says he hates all day talking smack about the game on every thread.

He NEVER has anything to offer anyone except to try and bring people down who are having fun. What was the point of this thread? To remind us that he thinks it svcks? Again and again for weeks? Just ask your self what kind of issues somebody who does something like that has.

This garbage should just be deleted has spam.

Ive read that up to 35% of ps3 owners are experiencing bad lag problems. If thats true, then it is bad business to release a game as playable and have 35 % of the platforms players not be able to play past a certain point. Only in gaming is this accepted, please force feed me more crap and please charge me for it hehe.
