Imperials vs. Stormcloaks (Among other topics)

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 6:08 pm

Only they do.

There's a general mistrust of magic among the Nords, that's true. Still, most Nord Jarls (including Mr "I'm Supposed To Hate Elves" Stormcloak himself) have court wizards, and gladly hand out enchanted weapons and armor to any adventurer (i. e. the Dragonborn) they want to award.
One thing that can be mentioned to the Court Wizard issue is that most common nords you ask about it seem to be uncomfortable with even having a mage as an advisor the the Jarl.

It isn't just Stormcloaks who are pissed at mages. When the Empire takes Winterhold, they still complain about the college.

Yup, which is why I said nords, but if the empire the one who's fighting they have high rock and the nords under them will have no other coices but works alongside them, if stormcloak fights who knows? Magic can be shunned even more due to lack of empire influence.

Yes, the common people still dislike mages. But the Imperial Legion does not. It actually employ mages and battlemages, and mages are not frowned upon in Cyrodiil(they seem to be very involved in the provinces politics based on the College questline). The argument I put forward is that with the legion there will be more knowledge of magic than with the Stormcloaks.

But who commands the army? Correct, the jarls. :)

Ok, I admit the court mages might not be in the battlefield. But I just remembered that the Stormcloaks actually use mages, at least for healing wounded soldiers - the Snow-Shod family in Riften lost their daughter who fought for the Stormcloaks as a healer.

I'm not denying that they use enchanted weapon bit it's common, even the enchanter at college says that they use enchanted weapons and armor.

About the court mages though, good point, I forgot about them. But do they join the battle? As I've posted several scenario above that shows disadvantage without the presence of mage on the battlefield.

1) Alright I'll concede on that one, they have cour mages to tell them that basic things anyway.

2) Until they resurrected the nords themselves.

3) Fair enough.

4) Fair enough on levitation but dispel can be used on many others, such as reflect damage.

About the frenzy poison, mage can counter that with calm spell.

Well, I'm not about to say NOT having a wizard is an advantage. It's simply not an insurmountable advantage. Calm spell effectively removes the target from the battle, at least temporarily. Also, we both know that they aren't one handed masters, and they aren't throwing thrall spells around either.

Regardless, this is a silly thing to discuss. At least the specifics of battlefield tactics. Would make a good scene in a movie though, I think.

I could've swore the Imperial Mages guild was disbanded as a term in the WGC and that's why the Synod's around now.

I suppose they do use restoration spells to heal but besides that? And I'm sure the dominion will use restoration spells to heal too, so it won't give them an advantage.

edit :

Synod and the college of whispers can still be sources of battlemages. And in the beggining at there was battlemages firing fireballs at Alduin.

Arcadia is a healer. Just sayin. She might not have used magic at all. It's not entirely clear.

Though, you remind me that there's plenty of priests around. That "magic" doesn't seem to be frowned upon very heavily. Especially the restoration school. A lot of people have a lot of respect for it.

Which brings me back to turning those reanimated Nords.

Just kidding... I'm so done with that.

Not quite, the MG was disbanded after the Oblivion Crisis for reasons unknown, but it is still said that mages in Cyrodiil are about politics. This is mentioned several times in the College of Winterhold questline. And the Imperial Legion still employ battlemages as seen in the start of the game(Helgen). The WGC have nothing to do with the Synod of College of Whispers.

Could you imagine if, instead of mages, Stormcloaks trained its soldiers to use the thuum? That'd be nuts!

That'll takes time though and who'll teach them? The greybeards? They're pacifism they won't teach bunch of soldier the thu'um to be used as instrument of war.

The Dragonborn? Kyne? I don't know. But it'd be cool.

Indeed, it would be. Sadly there are a few problems with the concept.
1: The only possible teachers would be the greybeards(who wouldn't do it) and Ulfric who also seem unwilling to do it. Ulfric says that even if he have fallen from the strict teachings of the Greybeards the Thu'um is not something to be used lightly. The Dovehkiin could probably not teach it either since he is using it instinctive and haven't really "learned" it.

2: It takes a long time to learn even the most basic abilities. Ulfric was training for 10 years and he can useUnrelenting Force and Disarm. That is the extent of his abilities.

Why in Oblivion Kyne or any other Aedra will help a bunch of barbarians to win such a honorable war ?

Yeah it'll be cool if nords are able to use thu'um it'll benefit both sides, and I suppose the dragonborn might be able to teach them but i don't know the dragonborn doesn't exactly learn the normal way.

Not in such a case.

Akatosh was one of the motivators to create the Empire.

I don't think Kyne or Akatosh manifested the first time when they gave the Nords Dragonborn blood or the Thu'um. Kyne used Paarthurnax.

I suppose Paarthurnax or Odahviing or any dragon might be able to teach it. Still it takes time though.

Simple, if I play a Nord than its Stormcloaks any other race its imperials.

Why would any race other than Nords favour the Stormcloaks?
I reckon most Nords secretly sympathises with the rebellion, and want their country free even if they can't stand Ulfric and his methods.
